I'm undergoing breast reduction surgery in a month's time and I'm looking for any information on the post recovery period. Specifically, I'm looking for any personal experience women can pass on about how long they were benched off the bike. I'm not a hard core cyclist..just one of them commuter / lifestyle types.

Hi Kate - Welcome to TE!

I had that procedure done December 2005 - I wrote a little of my experience here (http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=4689\).

My recovery was pretty fast, nd not too uncomfortable. I was walking a mile within a few days of the surgery, and back on my bike (on the trainer) 2 weeks after the surgery. I did 45-60 minute trainer rides for 2 weeks, then was out on the road a month after surgery.

Good luck with the procedure - my only regret is that I wish I had done it sooner!

Hi Kate,

It has been ...yikes!... 14 years for me so my recollection of the details isn't great, but I was feeling pretty good within a couple of days and back to normal activities (nothing too intense) in a couple of weeks. In the first month I was pretty sore but I got my energy back quickly enough (of course I was 18 then). But I had a similar surgery a couple of years ago and found it much the same.

I'd be careful that you don't do anything where you can injure yourself (i.e. fall) while you are still healing, but my doctor encouraged me to get out and exercise within reason as soon as I was up to it. A trainer sounds like a great way to get back into the groove.

Good luck with the surgery, I'm sure that you will find it a positive experience that will make staying active a lot easier.

I had this surgery done in November 2005....best thing I ever did for myself!

I went for a one mile walk 2 days after the surgery (slowly and gingerly), and was cleared for unlimited activity after 4 weeks. I did take it easy for awhile when lifting things, however.

Eat healthy, stay hydrated, don't smoke, follow the post surgical directions, and you should be back on the bike before you know it...and looking and feeling terrific!!

Here is a link to a discussion group I followed before and after my surgery. I got some good ideas for bras, dealing with scars, etc....http://messageboards.makemeheal.com/index.php (http://http://messageboards.makemeheal.com/index.php)

The best of luck to you!

Had mine done in 2000, like others here it was the best thing I ever did for myself. My recovery time was much longer though (almost a month), I wonder if removal of the pedicle makes for a longer recovery time??

Well, had another consult with my surgeon... definitely benched from the bike for 30 days post surgery. Now the bit about not going crazy ...
