I'm a new biker...and a volleyball player...sometimes I feel like I should be wearing knee pads on my bike :) (I wrecked the other day and bruised and skinned my knee pretty bad) are straps or clips better? Can I ride without either? I'm looking to finish races and keep up in practice, other than that I don't care too much about my speed. Thanx for any advice :)!

did you ever say whether you were a road or mtn biker? It's not uncommon for mtbers to wear knee pads to save a little skin.
clips are way more effienceint than any other way of pedaling, but there is a definite learning curve.

And all down-hill mountain bikers wear gear. But I've never seen a roadie wearing protective stuff. But there's always a first!
I had a friend who's wife was starting out with clips on her road bike. I offered her my elbow pads (I sometimes wear then when mountain biking). She used them on her first day in clips. You know Bell Helmet's slogan "Courage for Your Head"? She called my pads courage for her elbows.

New road biker and loving every bit of it...but I don't like speed...little afraid of wrecking hard...at my fastest I average about 27
