Yesterday, Meg & I were out for a toodle around town. Towards the end of the ride, we stopped to admire some geese eating dropped fast food in the parking lot of the rec center and ended up chatting with a woman who was unloading a Novarra hybrid. Turned out she was meeting her cycling instructor.

Apparently he had 3-4 beginning ladies he was starting out. As we were heading out, he rode by and I told him he had a student waiting back there.

Thought it was kinda nifty.

I like that our local club has adult beginner classes. I think it's a great idea.

I paid a young lady at Cycle U a heaping sum of denaro to babysit and instruct and hold my hand while I learned how to use the SPD pedals. It was worth every cent.

I think it's a great idea, and I've been known to do this sort of thing also. Part of our work with TNT involves helping people learn group riding skills, shifting, climbing, descending, cornering, using clipless, etc. And I will sometimes go out with friends of all skill levels and work with them to find ways to improve their cycling.

Sounds like he's found himself a nice niche market.

Our club has a beginners cycling class too. They go over things like basic safety, group riding, and flat changing. There's both classroom and road instruction.

I just missed it but they're running another one sometime soon.

Seems like the League of American Bicyclists has a list of instructors.

you can also find a directory of coaches at http://www.usacycling.org

As a coach, I generate a good portion of my income through clinics and private instruction. With the right coach, you'll learn more in an hour or two that you'd learn in a year by trial or error on your own.

Thanks - I'm gonna look into it. I've just about had my year of trial and error.....!
