Hello all, does anyone ride a Trek 420? Why I asking is because I've been looking on Ebay for a 'good used' road bike, and there happens to be a Trek 420 - no year stated. I appears to be a silver with red/black lettering. The price on this bike is up to $122.00 - only hourse left. Didn't know if this is something I should consider. Thanks for your feedback. Nancy
I had one for years and years. Its a good bike with decent if dated components. Mine was purchased in the early 1990's (actually I had two of them, my first purchased in the late 80's was stolen - that one was red with black lettering and my next one was powder blue and pink - blech, but there was only one paint color available per year so baby colors it was...) I think the model was available for a long time so it could be from any number of years. The paint colors may give you a clue to which year. Being an older steel bike and a sport touring gemometry its not a particularly light or spry bike, so I wouldn't suggest that you buy it for racing but its a great touring bike, would make a good commuter/every day bike and would be fine for century rides/randonuring. I think $122 would be a stellar deal to pick this one up.

Hello all, does anyone ride a Trek 420?
Uh, yeah  I used to have one. ;)
Great all round steel touring bike, relaxed geometry, very nice ride.
Treks entry level bottom of the barrel cheap as they come road frame. The gears, wheels it came with, not too good.
But upgrade and you've got a nice bike. By that time I could have spent the same and had the 5200 WSD .... but the 420 fit me so well :)
Its all about the fit.
Good luck trying one, Trek stopped making them long ago. Mine was a 1986 and the color of the year was purple to green fade
They stopped production of the 420 soon after that.
Check the vintage site for colors/dates.
You can still get the next bump up the 520 at your LBS which I think is a good bike.

Thanks for your input. I think I'm going to pass on this 420 and look for something a little newer. I would rather buy new - I like Trek but they least expensive bike is $750. I went to the Jamis web site - the Ventura Sport is $535 - I like the price. I really don't plan on riding over 35 miles or any racing. Just want an upgrade from a hybrid.

Surg - what bikes have you been test riding so far? Which ones do you like the most?
