Highway 1 from Muir Beach to Stinson was closed for several months over the winter and spring because of landslides. I haven't ridden it in probably a year between the road closure and my time off the bike last year, and it's one of my favorite roads.
Before, the road surface was not good in parts. There were large patches of alligatoring asphalt, big holes and parts of the road seemed to be sinking. Indeed parts were threatening to fall off into the ocean!
Now they have re-built it with a series of 5 - 6 VERY heavily engineered retaining walls supporting various parts of the road. But the best news is they just went ahead and re-paved the whole dang thing with smooth wonderful new asphalt!!
Yay! That's 2 points for CalTrans this week alone!!
