View Full Version : Chirping spd's...?

I frequently ride accompanied by a "chirping" sound as I pedal. Last year I assumed it was dust accumulating around the bottom bracket/crank. I had that cleaned and packed before I began riding this year, so it shouldn't be an issue this early in the season. I'm wondering now if it's one of my cleats/pedals. I found one thread here about lubing Speedplay pedals that recommended White Lightning, and I've read the suggestion elswehere to spray cooking oil on the cleats.
Just out of curiosity, though, does anyone have any specific recommendations for spd pedals/cleats? Has anyone tried PAM?

White Lightening if they are speedplays.

Forgot to specify: My pedals/cleats are Shimano.

Although lubing pedals (slightly) can relieve some noises, I would recommend looking elsewhere. Normally a chirping sound is a sign of dirty derailluer pulley wheels.. try cleaning those.
Good luck!

Actually, my derailleur pulley wheels get cleaned every time I wipe down my chain, which is after almost every ride. I'll probably find, though, that it is something totally unrelated to what I'm thinking it is.
I've heard chirping while riding but thought it sounded like mouse squeaks. Yes, I thought my problem was my cheap spd pedal. Oiling the pedal threads was a very temporary fix. My bike shop put another set of cheap pedals on free. I don't hear the squeaks as often now, but occasionally the squeaks come back to visit when right side crank is under more pressure. Wish I could help you and I figure out the chirps. Thank goodness for gals with more experience.
