Woohoo- the state lawmakers are trying to change the bike law in Texas. I know that it is still up to the drivers to obey, but at least the cops might actually be watching. The governor rode the MS150 in 2005, so I doubt he would veto the bill. :)

Hopefully that link works.
It works.
Three feet is still mighty close. I'm surprised to hear that from a cyclist. If someone driving a car were passed by another driver at a distance of only three feet that first driver would raise hell.
Y'all need to kick Senator Kyle Janek to the curb. Then maybe one more time for good measure

Three feet seems like the whole rode to me sometimes! I get passed so close, that I think, "wow, that was so fricken close!" I ride a section of a rode by my house that is a 4 lane highway. The traffic travels at 70 mph...I ride on the white line the whole section of this rode, and there are still folks that don't give one bit! There is even an extra lane! Even if this does pass, I am not sure that it will get into some of these drivers head! I realize that the rode was made for cars and not bikes, but I think that I do all I can do, not to get in the way or make drivers mad...Thanks for the read

Zen- Janek does not serve my district, but I am saddened to see he graduated from my University. His quote makes him sound like an ***!
Heidi- I don't really think it will help, but at least there *might* be some officers who will enforce it or at least stiffer penalties for those who hit cyclists. We actually have pretty courteous drivers down here, there is only one road I dread because everyone just seems so annoyed by us. And it is just a little Farm Road with a small shoulder, we really don't impede traffic that badly.

Thanks for pointing that out, though. I didn't know about it!

Hey Amanda-
I just noticed you live in Liberty Hill. Our good friends moved there a couple of years ago. maybe when I finally go down to see their place we can hook up for a ride. It sure seems like a nice area. The closest I've been is the inside of the Austin airport on a stop over.

..Janek /sigh
'Safe distance' on the single lane back roads I ride seems to mean just far enough away that you're not smacked in the back of the head with a mirror.
Compared to the skewed way many people are interpretting the current law, putting it in hard terms would definitely be a huge step up.

Denise- There is great cycling right outside my door. If you are ever in Liberty Hill, I would love to go for a ride!
Meridian- That is my experience with the current law, at least having the distance defined would be an improvement.
