I love riding my bike, but the sun does not like me. I have been searching for light weight knickers with light padding, have a Canari pair now with gel in them, yuck when it gets sweaty and find the padding in most shorts overkill and very uncomfortable. I also am looking for some long sleeve light weight, bright jerseys or shirts in a moisture wicking fabric. I have been searching the web without much success. Any suggestions are most appreciated.

Try these guys:

The shipping is reasonable and they make great stuff. They have a lovely long sleeve jersey for summer that I have been eyeing off.:)
They also make great shorts and knickers.

I have these Terry knickers that are designed for spin classes (stationary bikes). They are nice and light and they have a very lightweight chamois pad, almost more like a cotton lining with very thin flat foam inside. VERY comfortable and definitely what I would call light padding.

You can even wear them around when not biking, because you can't really tell from looking that there is a pad there at all.

http://www.boure.com/8604W.html - I love this SPF 50 jersey! It looks like it's sold out right now, but they should be getting more in by the end of the month. Also looks like the pre-sale is over, but $80 is still a good price since tax and shipping are included if you live outside of Colorado. No need for sunscreen underneat the jersey, and it keeps me feeling cool in hot weather.
Looks like they have a new SPF 30 jersey as well. http://www.boure.com/8604Wye.html
Also, http://www.rei.com/product/705491?vcat=REI_SEARCH - while this isn't really a cycling jersey, it works. I wore the white one hiking all day in the hot sun last weekend and no suntan lines from my bra straps underneath. Also, I felt as cool as I could at 90 degrees outside. It is SPF 50.
I've yet to find lightweight (for warm weather/summer) SPF tights with chamois. CW-X is going to be coming out with SPF 50 lightweight running tights (no chamois) later this year. I'm going to try those out with chamois shorts underneath.

Keep us posted ladies. I am very interested in hearing how you like the products... Heat is hard for me to deal with, and the summer sun is even worse. Hoping this is a viable alternative for me!

This one is so pretty and with the exchange rate pretty cheap for the USA ladies. Shipping from Ground effect is pretty cheap too.

Thanks so much for the responses! I checked everything out and I see a whole summer ride wardrobe I am getting ready to order. I do a cross state ride for one week each summer with my son on a tandem; so I need enough to last a few days before I can wash it. Everything looks great. Thanks again.

Hey thanks! I like that yellow jersey so much that I ordered it!
Hoping it will be good for summer. Also hoping that the "elastic" waist is not too small for my girly hips!

I second trekhawk's suggestion for a Ground effect jersey. Hey, if it's made to suit the NZ/Aust heat(nice ozone hole right above nz :( ) must be ok for the Northern Hemisphere.
I've seen a few folks in the Starfish Jersey and looks like it does the job!~
Must resist temptation to purchase more from Ground Effect..Rather large order today

Just a follow up to all the great advice. The Terry capris are terrific, getting ready to order a second pair. The ground effect jersey is a bit big in size small and also rather an interesting shade of green. The folks there were great in quickly responding and extremely helpful so will probably be trying them for something else. I found the one shirt from REI online that is supposedly to be used under other shirts for wicking and SPF. I bought it, tried it on a ride this weekend with the Terry capris and both were perfect. The ride started out with the temperature around 58 degrees and ended when it was around 80 degrees and I was very comfortable the whole time. I bought another shirt from REI when I stopped by the store to pick up the online purchase. I noticed in Terry's catalog (did not see it online) that they have a long sleeve summer jersey in two colors as well as summer boleros to wear over other jerseys. I am going to try them as well. THANKS SO MUCH for all the information; it was just what I needed.

Just received my SPF 50 tights today! YIPPEE!!! :D
Granted, they do not have a chamois, so they will be worn over my chamoised shorts, but I've been doing that anyway with my Under Armour tights and now I won't have to wear sunscreen underneath them! It's getting way too warm for the Under Armour too, so these came just in time! :)
Here's the link. If your not sure about sizing, just e-mail your stats and they'll recommend the correct size for you. I had to order the children's size for age 11/12. They are looked way too small when they came out of the package - I thought they'd look like capris, which I did NOT want - but, they stretched out and fit just fine.

Hi,
I live in Texas and bike all year long, no matter if it is cold and hot to very hot.
About sunprotective close for outdoor sport like cycling there is not much out yet, and if, this things are to baggy. There where different threads about sunprotective covers. I have a very nice longsleeve cycling jersey from Jaggad it's called Solarace jersey, you can check it out at Bikemania.biz, and TE just got in a Canari jersey which goes under sunprotective... it is still limited choice but in time people are more aware to protect themselves from the sun...
I hope this helps

michele, curious as to how those tights work out. they seem like they'd be hot on the warmer days unless they are really, really breathable..

Hi fellow sun-avoiders! I have the Jaggad jersey, it did prevent sunburn(and tanning) but I didn't like the fabric so much - it has no stretch at all. I have 3 Terry "Reaction" jerseys, and I love them. I wore them at last year's RAGBRAI, (the ride was so hot that the native Iowans were complaining). I was able to ride with the zipper zipped all the way up, and the long sleeves were comfortably cool. They washed and dried nicely too. The colors they show right now aren't too summery though, I prefer something lighter than the dark pink and dark blue, just to absorb less heat. For shorts, I am trying the Louis Garneau "Power" shorts with a long (I think it's 10.5 inches) inseam. At least they will keep the tops of my knees covered. I have a shorter pair of the Power shorts, the fabric is great, the ergo zone chamois is deluxe and they are well worth the price. Yes, they have the dreaded "golf ball" butt effect, but when I am riding long and hard, I just want comfort. I pick them up tomorrow at my LBS. Have a safe Memorial Day weekend! Tokie

roguedog,
I'll let you know this weekend - it's supposed to be in the upper 80's/low 90's. I've been wearing my Under Armour cold gear tights in the 80 degree temps and am okay, but there is no spf in them so I have to wear sunscreen underneath. After living in the Phoenix-area of AZ, I don't feel warm 'til it's over 100 degrees out.

I'm sending my Canari yellow back because the sleeves felt wonderful but the body was just too tight. I need to lose more weight before I can wear that comfortably, which makes me sad.
Susan, does it come in XXL?
I think it's important for people to tell what they are describing as "heat" because it really does vary. When I emailed Rivendell to ask about their loose summer clothing, it turned out they consider 90 hot. Well, yes, it is, but sometimes in Dallas it doesn't get below 90 all night! That's a heat wave, but summer for us means lows in the 80s so what one person describes as working for "heat" may not for someone else!
I'm going to check out the Ground Zero stuff.
I have a couple of sleeveless jerseys and slather on the sunscreen and pray. Sigh.

Okay, wore the full-length sun protective tights this weekend in 90 degree weather (with chamois shorts underneath). NO TAN LINES!!! So, I believe the spf 50 fabric did it's job. When I stripped down, my chamois was quite damp, but the tights were not. I did not feel too hot, but then again, having lived in the Phoenix, AZ area, I am quite heat tolerant. Anyway, I highly suggest these tights. Only downside is that the ankles do not have elastic, so I have to tuck them into my socks to keep them down.
Oh, another plus to wearing the full-length tights is that they really protected my skin when I crashed in them. Big bruise on my outer upper thigh, but no skin abrasians. And the tights held up without any holes or tears.

Michelem, I had a similar experience when I fell wearing Terry knickers. Bruise, but no skinning, and fortunately the knickers held up to it. (I wasn't going fast, though.)
Thanks for this feedback. I have a double-whammy of being fair and cancer-prone, but also suffering excessively from heat, so it's a difficult choice between covering my skin and sweltering, and exposing my skin and being a little more comfortable. Sigh.
I'm really looking for a great sun block, but I figure in a few years they'll be telling us that all the sunscreen we've been wearing is bad for us, too.
Glad to know I'm not the only one! I just bought a cycling jersey at Skin-Savers.com (http://skin-savers.com/Action_Wear/). I bought the long-sleeve version (scroll down a little to the blonde woman not wearing a helmet) and wore it yesterday for the first time. When we finished our ride it was about 90 degrees. Ours is made of micromesh and kept us cool and comfortable. They are SPF 50+
I'm also planning to order a sunscreen made from non-toxic ingredients called UV Natural (http://www.uvnaturalusa.com) (the link goes to the U.S. distribution site -- the main site is UVNatural.com (http://www.uvnatural.com/)).
Whatever it takes to go out and have fun and stay protected, I'm willing to pay the $.

Hi Yen: I use the same sunscreen, a bit greasy to blend in all the zinc oxide but it is the highest rated one on a list of sunscreens that effectively protect against both UVA and UVB rays while also having very little to no chemical toxins in it. I have to cover my skin and so many of the sunscreens have so many questionable chemicals in them. I then question what is worse, the sun or chemicals being smeared all over. I like the shirt colors, some great ones to be seen in. I am going to try one. Thanks for the info.

I'm trying to figure out what the dreaded golf ball butt effect might be....
