Chamois (sp?) What exactly are you referring to. Is that what the lining is ON the padding in my bibs? I know I'm still learning.

it's the padding you sit on on the inside of your cycling shorts.

Yes, and in Ye Olden Days, it was just a piece of thin soft chamois leather in order to prevent chafing of the skin. There was no padding or cushioning.
Nowadays we tend to ride on foam, gel, and puffage of all kinds.

I rode one of those, one day only, back when... (insert: I was young and stupid).

I could not pee the rest of the day. I don't know how they did it with just that skimpy little piece of leather.

"Back in the day" I rode in whatever shorts or pants I had, on the stock seat (didn't even know to call it a saddle). My handlebar had a thin wrap of cloth tape and I didn't know there was such a thing as bike gloves. I was happy and I don't remember feeling uncomfortable. These days I need my padded shorts, anatomical seat, padded bar tape, and gel gloves or I'll quickly be in extreme discomfort. What happened? Is it just age, or that I now know better?

I know what makes it different for me....when I ride the places today that I used to ride as a kid, I know see just how short distances they were! Only a few blocks here and there, or a short couple of miles to my friends' house. Nothing compared to the 30-40 mile rides I do today. :)

A couple of years ago I went back to see the house I was reared in. I remember it as this huge house with this huge yard. I guess the rain shrunk it. You can never go home...sigh.

Did you go back to your elementary school?

How do they shrink buildings, anyway?

I had a pretty good bike commute during highschool summer school, um, probably about 7 miles (?) each way on the rare days we rode pretty directly there and back. We tended to take the scenic way home... Of course, we wore jeans and no helmets. All I know is that 14+ miles daily now in jeans would probably kill me.

I think we were just tougher then. Or something.
