Ok.. this may be blasphemy but the Atlantis has a bunch of chain chatter on the chain stay when it's in the granny gear. Should I get a chain guard for it??

Hmm.. maybe the chain just needs adjusting and it's too "loose"?


Sorry folks. As I go thru fixing up the Atlantis and building the Bridgestone, I'm afraid I'm going to be a major poster in this thread :)

Ed to add: Oh.. maybe it's not called chain guard. What I mean is something that protects the chainstay from the chain hitting it. Whatever that's called. Maybe it's a chain stay guard?

I don't think your chain SHOULD be hitting your chain stay, even when in granny gear. How about getting your bike a derailleur tune-up now that you've got it assembled?
One possible problem might be if the previous owner changed the original cassette and maybe the original derailleur can't handle the new range of gears. It's possible to fix such a thing by getting a different derailleur to handle the wider cassette I believe. But if the bike has all it's original parts, there shouldn't be chain chatter if the derailleurs are properly tuned in.
If your chain is "too loose" then there's another good reason to get a thorough tune-up.

You might need to take some links out of the chain if it's actually loose in the small-small combination (which you really shouldn't be using anyway). But if you need all that chainlength to reach the big-big combination, then the derailleur is not appropriate for your gearing.

All my bikes have thick stickers over the potential contact area on the chainstay. I dunno what they are called (skins?) but I'm sure you can find them somewhere. I have gray ones and a clear one. So, after you get your derailleur adjusted you could ask the LBS what they have. I like my clear one, because it doesn't interfere with the beautiful paint! (but the gray ones don't show the grease, it's a trade off, but with a beauty like an Atlantis I'd go for the clear. Just my two cents... :D )
