ya gotta do more than the bunny route this year Snap! ;) I did this ride many years ago and the very long hill coming back up to the start just about killed me! I'm sure I'm better prepared to handle it now... but it was a toughie! :p

I've done the "Marshall Wall" once before, when I was in shape for it. It will depend on how much riding I get done before August. I'll register for the 100k, but reserve the right to do the bunny! ;) :D

It can be warm, but you go so close to the coast I don't feel like this is ever "hot". The ride is well supported and just a great course.

I'm definitely planning it - thanks for the reminder, Snap!

Well, I think it is aerodynamic - internally routed cables and all - but I am concerned about the potential for brain damage. I know, I know, it's just a cow, so how can you tell? But still, I think the PETA people would certainly have something to say about it.

Now THAT'S how you do a thread hijack.

I think I can tie it all together:

Brownies go with milk, where does milk come from? COWS! Hey, HOLSTEINS are cows! Holstein 100 -- Ta Da! Back on topic! Phew!

So, I feel like the hardest part it done, getting it all on paper. Doing my practice talk on Thursday, so I will have most stuff done before the weekend.

There are quite a few good restaurants in Petaluma. I used to live there, and the number has grown since I moved, but some reliable favorites are Dempsey's Alehouse (not just brewpub grub!), the New Yorker Pizza (for the thin crust fans), Old Chicago Pizza (for the thick crust with 3 lbs of cheese fans) and Volpi's (pasta and they have a former speakeasy in the back).

In light of my AT's (see Marin Century thread if you really want to know) and overall laziness, plus the fact we have a houseguest, we're doing the metric only. I will look for you. I think we're starting early, around 7. I want to get done early so I can spend time with my friend who's staying with us. The metric route is pretty flat/rollery til the very end, which does Wilson and Marshall, I believe. (We just did the metric route as a training/taper ride for DR). It's a fun route.

jo - it looks like it is the same as the metric, except at the beginning where you go to Occidental at the beginning, and towards Petaluma in the middle. You'll still get to climb Marshall. :D I wonder if the century goes by the cheese place?

100 Mile Route: North to Bodega Bay, East to Occidental, South to Chileno Valley, East to Petaluma, West to Marshall, North to Tomales.
Approximately 5500 feet of climbing. Fee is $65.

I did it in 2005, so my recollection is a little fuzzy. I have the map somewhere. 7000 feet of climbing per my BJ report, which has no detail.

It was Tomales - Dillon Beach - Valley Ford - Bay Hill (watch the descent - TERRIBLE pavement) - Coleman Valley - Occidental (skip the Occidental rest stop and stop at the Freestone Bakery on the way to Valley Ford) - loops of flat stuff between Petaluma and Valley Ford - Wilson Hill - Marshall Wall - Tomales. It's a great century route.

I think 7 or 7:30-ish for dinner would be a good time to shoot for since then we'd be able to hit the sack early. Would that be too early for you, though?

What about the rest of you (Kim, Ellen, Ann, Melissa, ??), and idea when you might arrive?

At least Petaluma is a bit shorter drive than Santa Rosa from the bay area, which is especially helpful on Friday evening. :p

Perhaps pizza would be quicker than the other options? Then we'd only have to decide between thick & thin crust.

Deanna, do you know offhand which pizza place has quicker service or anything else to recommend over the other?

jobob
08-15-2007, 08:37 AM

Deanna

JoBob,

I'll be doing the century route. Bay Hill has been somewhat repaved (their starting a new quarry out there, thankfully hidden from the road) so not as bad has it was in the past--I swear I about bounced off the back of the tandem one time on the old pavement.

Foodwise, I think the New Yorker has faster service. They also have pasta, which Old Chicago does not. Their salads leave something to be desired, but they are greens if that's what you need. A transplanted New York family runs it--I watched the kids grow up, so I'm a little more partial to them.

I can't make it for a pre-ride dinner, but I'd be up for stopping for a brewski at Dempseys afterwards. Their food is very good, with many of the produce coming from the owners farm.

I might opt for the metric after all - it seems kind of silly to go all that way to be with a bunch of friends and then not even ride with them.

Plus Dr. PAB is leaving very soon and Trekhawk is leaving not long from now. Not many more chances to ride with them :(

Plus it hasn't escaped my notice that an earlier finish would make a stop at Dempseys before the drive home that much more doable. :D

Yes, jobob, the century will be Good For You. And maybe, you could do the 100 miles of Holstein on Saturday and then the 100k of Napa on Sunday? Or maybe the full 100 miles on Sunday too. (I feel like my slacker attitude is rubbing off on you, and must therefore do something to counteract that.) I was told by a grizzled DC veteran that doing back-to-back centuries was the best prep for a double.

As for dinner, 7 or later works for me. But I like thick crust pizza :).

No No Jo, you have to do the century! That is what Amie and I are doing!

As for the route... I wonder if they have changed it since MP did it as they claim that it is ~5500 ft of climbing.... hmmmmm....I hope that it isn't 7000

As for dinner. Amie and I could do 7 or 7:30. We will probably leave PA around 4 or 4:30.... hopefully it doesn't take a full 3.5 hours to get there with traffic!

OK, here are the collected dinner suggestions from Deanna

There are quite a few good restaurants in Petaluma. I used to live there, and the number has grown since I moved, but some reliable favorites are Dempsey's Alehouse (not just brewpub grub!), the New Yorker Pizza (for the thin crust fans), Old Chicago Pizza (for the thick crust with 3 lbs of cheese fans) and Volpi's (pasta and they have a former speakeasy in the back).

Foodwise, I think the New Yorker has faster service. They also have pasta, which Old Chicago does not. Their salads leave something to be desired, but they are greens if that's what you need. A transplanted New York family runs it--I watched the kids grow up, so I'm a little more partial to them.

To help with your dinner decision, I should clarify that Old Chicago is more of a deep dish pizza. They even have a double crust stuffed. I don't know if they take reservations, but if they do, I'd recommend it, it can get crowded on the weekends.

Kim's the only one who's expressed a preference so far, for thick crust. But deep dish is a whole 'nother thing. My past experience with deep dish-type places is that it takes a really long time to prepare the pizza, and Deanna mentioned the Old Chicago gets crowded on the weekends.

Would you folks be OK with the New Yorker pizza? I know it's thin crust Kim, and you can whine at me to your heart's content. It got some rave reviews - but we already know it's going to be great since Deanna recommended it ! - but here they are in case you're interested:

Sadly, not this time. We made ride/dinner plans way back in May with the non-TE type friends that we rode with last year.

We're riding the metric. Will be on the lookout for AV kits in the morning at registration and out on the road :D.

Meow?

I just printed out a direction from Pointe Reye and its only 20 miles (half an hour drive). If I get to my B&B in time, I will try to come to the dinner. I also worry about the bike in my car...

As for the ride itself, sad to say my poor back is still acting up. I think I can do the metric but I worry about the 8 hour drive home on Sunday. I'm still undecided whether to go for the metric or go really easy and do the 30miler :p Just over a month ago, I did a 34 miler fun ride (again due to my poor back). It was like oh its over already?? And my back was really un-happy the following week. :(

I'll be taking the scenic route up to Pointe Reye. Maybe the scenery will convince me to do the metric. It seems like an easy metric. The Marshall wall doesn't look too bad or is it? :D

Oh in case if I don't show up for the dinner, I will be riding my blue Orbea Dama Race bike with white Jett130 seat. No saddlebag. Jersey is purplish/maroonish color with a picture of dragon fly riding a bike. Blue helmet with red bandana underneath in lieu of skull cap, blue glove and blue short.

And I will be riding really easy to enjoy the scenery.

I'll pull together a report with pics in a bit. I rode the century route with Ellen (PABager) and her friend Amie, and their friend John.

It was the first century for the three of them, booyah!

This was a challenging ride, made more so by the wicked afternoon head & side winds we encountered for the last 25 miles or so.

aka_kim and TrekHawk rode the metric with LeeBob, and I'll leave it to them to tell their tales. They finished early in the afternoon and they hung out with Lee and waited for us to finish - and they had a LONG wait. :o

That was so incredibly sweet of them to wait for us, I can't tell you how happy I was to see them !

Here's the route profile from my computer, which showed about 6500 ft of climbing (the last climb into a wicked headwind, I might add! :p ) Ellen, just curious, what was the amt climb from your Edge?

WARNING LONG!

So, as Jo already said, we did the Holstein 100 century route yesterday along with my roommate Amie and her friend John. It was a great day, with amazing scenery and great company!

The weather was great, except for the crazy wind that whipped up in the afternoon (it actually blew me over late in the day  and I have the chain ring bite to prove it).

Amie, John, and I met up with Jobob, Leebob, Trekhawk and AKAKim at the Tomales high school around 7 am, got riding by 7:30 or so and quickly the sane people doing the metric spit off from us crazy century folks. The morning was great.... the views up Coleman Valley road were inspiring, the cows were on the road, and I made sure that Jobob knew what I thought of the climb (I was telling her that "Coleman Valley $ucks!" in the photo... my language got progessively worse throught the afternoon  ) We then had a great decent after the first rest stop followed by lots of rollers (some a bit larger than rollers).

I started feeling pretty crummy around mile 60 or so, stomach feeling off all that fun stuff. We got to the top of a small climb and I asked for a break.... that is when Jo made me eat some clif blocks... wow, what an amazing food! I felt better within 5 minutes and was good for the rest of the ride (with additional food at the upcoming rest stops). Thanks Jo for making me eat! I have to say, it is really great to do your first century with someone who is experienced to help through all the little things like recognizing when you need to eat something when your body is telling you that you don't want to eat.

The wind really picked up in the afternoon, did a bit of drafting which helped a lot, but not with the crazy cross winds that would totally blow your bike around. Got the the last rest stop just before the Marshal Wall (at around mile 90  ) and they told us that if we kept going there wouldn't be any food at the end and we should just SAG in. My response was at mile 90 NO WAY was I giving up. Well, we started up towards the Wall thinking that like the other hills it would block the wind a bit.... OR NOT! The wind was whipping straight down and across the hill. Amie and Jo take off up the hill, I got part way up, stopped to rest my legs a bit, and when I went to start again the combination of the steepness and the crazy wind blew me right over. I extracted my self from my bike, noticed a really great chain ring bite on my right shin and that I was going to have a mother of a bruise on my left hip. I ended up walking the next steep section of the hill as there was no way I was going to risk getting blown over again. Got to a less steep section, and was able to climb the rest of the way up.

At that point Jo took off towards the finish (Leebob had been waiting for us at the finish after doing the metric). Amie, John and I took off down the long decent and then took the turn onto HWY 1 along Tomales Bay... by this point I was cursing up a storm as this section had a ton of small hills, but bigger than rollers. I was down in my granny gear on pretty much every hill and was cursing the race organizers at every turn. When I made the final turn towards the finish line I knew I had done it and sped up. When I rolled into the High School Parking lot, Amie, Jobob, Leebob, Trekhawk and AKAkim where there cheering me on! John came rolling in a bit after me, and then one final guy who was out on the course behind us, so I wasn't last!

After getting cleaned up a bit Amie, John, the Bobs and I went for dinner in Petaluma...mmmmmm.... Milkshakes! and then drove home and crashed!

So, the stats for my first century (from my new Garmin Edge):
Distance: 103.81 miles
Ride Time: 8:12:39
Avg. Speed: 12.6 MPH
Total Ascent: 8447 ft. (I think that this is a bit over.... I would say an average between Jobob's profile and mine is probably correct, so somewhere around 7000 ft.)

It was a ton of fun seeing everyone at dinner, and meeting Trekhawk! Thanks so much Jo for riding with us, I think that it made a huge difference for me to be able to do the full century, so THANKS! And Leebob, Trekhawk, and AKAkim, thanks for hanging out until we finished! That was a long wait!

Here is a link to some of Amie's photos (I will get John's soon): http://picasaweb.google.com/ellen.mallman/HolsteinHundred

Close Encounters of the Bovine Kind
MP, you weren't kidding about the cows on Coleman Valley. We were a ways up the climb and we turned a corner and lo & behold, there's a cow standing partway into the road munching on some roadside grass. I tried to get a photo but it was getting steep at that point (getting, har har) and it behooved me to have full control as I was passing the cow's backside in case I needed to take Cow Evasive Manuevers.

Then, a little ways farther up, more cows along the road! One particularly large cow (a Guernsey, I do believe) stared me down as I was zooming up the road (zooming, har har) and as I approached she started walking out onto the road directly in front of me. "After you, ma'am" says I as I come to a rather abrupt halt and let her pass - I didn't want to entitle my ride report "Cow 1, Me 0"

The Rest Stop at Walker Ranch
The folks there were a hoot. Probably comes from hanging out there for about 8 hours. :p Walker Ranch at the base of the last climb up Marshal (at mile 90) was the last rest stop on the route. We were the ninth thru the sixth last riders remaining on the course, and as the riders trickled in the volunteers gave us a very loud cheer (as much out of relief that they'd be leaving soon as much as anything). They were really fun to talk to.

"Amici Veloci my Azz !"
The absolute funniest moment of the ride for me happened in the last mile or so. I'm plodding along Hiway 1, wondering where the hell is the turnoff for Tomales already(!), when a small white car suddenly toots it horn as it approaches me from behind.

I'm thinking to myself "Oh #$%!, I'm as far over as I can be, so shaddup already!", when the car pulls up next to me and the guy driving yells out "Amici Veloci my Azz!" Yes, it was Hot Rod !!!!! :D

So I grin and naturally, give him the Amici Veloci Sekret Hand Signal. We chatted for a little and he took off heading up Hiway 1 (with an attractive blonde in the passenger seat) and I reached my turnoff for Tomales High School. So I had a good chuckle to carry me for the half-mile or so remaining.

Wow... What fortitude on all of you to do the full century. My back was still bugging me so I opted for the metric. Did the upper half and decided to dump the ride just past the second rest stop. Instead of turning left at petaluma-tomales road, I turned right and limped back to the high school while nursing my poor back. One thing I wasn't expecting was the STRONG WIND!!! I wish I had another rider or two to share with blocking the wind...

Well supported ride, air was so clean and pristine (unlike LA), the moo-cows were a sight. I was worried about lack of shoulder on many of the road and seeing how the local farm boys raced down the road, it bugged me alot; but, it wasn't bad at all. None of them buzzed me. On Petaluma-tomales road, there were tons of black berries. Soo tempted to stop and munch out but decided against it.

If it weren't for the wind and my poor back, it would have been one great ride. Maybe next year.

I did drive into Petaluma for the get together but I didn't get the address right 4th and petaluma dr south?? the two streets ran in parallel. So I headed back to Pointe Reyes before the restaurant closed for the night. Better luck next time.

Oh after the ride lunch, I had their vegetarian cheese ziti with local blue cheese yummo!! Decided to buy the T-shirt afterall and left a suggestion: See if they can get a local massage school there with the massuse students to practice on the sore cyclists.

Maybe next time to meet some of you in person,

Oh geeze, we were worried about what became of you, because if you turned up at the pizza parlor, we wouldn't have been there! :o

Turns out, the New Yorker had limited seating and it was very crowded already, so since Lee & I were the first to arrive I dashed to a restaurant a few doors down to see if they could give us a table for 8 or so. Luckily it was before their evening rush so they were able to seat us all, and I was able to leave voicemail messages and/or wave people over as they arrived. But I didn't have a cell number for you and we had no idea what you looked like. (Note to self: get everyone's cell phone numbers beforehand).

Live long and prosper!!!

Great ride reports and rides, everyone! And great pictures!

Wow, congrats to PA Badger and friends on your first century. Huge!!! That's not an easy first century. Huge thumbs up!!

I saw Kim briefly at the start. We got a later start than I wanted, leaving at 7:30. But I think we must have left later than everyone who did the metric, because the roads were deserted, and we were the only folks back at the end. Super weird. We were also the first people to the Walker SAG stop and oh boy were those people desperate to have someone stop and take advantage of their facilities. But we just didn't need a SAG at that point. I needed a therapist.

I was very glad we opted for the metric. The butt lasted about 40 miles before it became horrible. (I've had a nasty case of ischeal bursitis.) I just couldn't get comfortable. So strange. But DH and I had a fun ride together. It always pushes me, but it was a good tune up for the ride we'll do in November. Fast and flat. We had a nice remora hook up with us for basically the entire ride. Wayne from Lodi. You can be a remora if you try to take a pull every once in a while (which he did) and if you're gracious and recognize you're hanging on (which he was).

Amazing baklava at the end. The support for the whole ride was fantastic. Once of the main reasons that is my favorite organized ride in this area.

And 7000 feet is just about what I got from doing the full route in 2005, so I think all your estimates of 7000 feet are right on.

DrBadger
08-19-2007, 08:45 PM
Jo, where did your MB post go????? So confused.....

Well, I just went to Motion Based, and the post that had the elevation at 11,000 feet was what it got from my Edge ????? it was really wierd.. I checked it to make sure that it wasn't trying to apply any corrections etc, and it wasn't. Said that it was using GPS and altimeter (ie. not their gravity correction). The thing that is even wierder is that there were 2 or 3 other reports with the full century and the elevations differed by over 2000 ft.. The same thing is true for the people who posted for the metric.

The values I posted in my earlier report were what my Edge gave me in Traning Center, so just what it pulled off my device. Motion Based screwed it up big time. I then tried to import the GPX file into both bikely and SportsTracks to see what they gave me. Bikely gave me about 5500 ft (just what the ride description said, but apparently it is limited to 100 elevation points, so for a 100 mile ride you are going to totally underestimate the true elevation gain) Then SportsTracks gave me 56,000 ft  there was OBVIOUSLY an error somewhere in the import I am guessing!

All this makes it really hard to know what to believe, even with what is supposed to be a good barametric altimeter. For now I am going to go with what Training Center gives me right off of the edge, but wierd.

I had posted that someone posted their stats to MotionBased for the century that showed an elevation gain of about 11,800 ft and I ended the post with something like "um ... I don't think so  "

and then I looked at the stats more carefully and thought "gee that person took about the same time we did ..."

and then I scrolled down some more and realized "holy **** that was Ellen!"

Annoyingly fresh? That couldn't have been me then :p . Well, maybe. It WAS before Marshall and the wind! It was nice to meet you and Kim and chat briefly.

This was my second year doing the metric. Last year I recall it being foggy a lot of the day. This year it was clear, but the wind was really something. There were a few times during the descents off the climbs that I thought my wheels were going to come right out from under me  . I had somehow buried, in the nether regions of my mind, most of my memories of the Marshall climb. Probably a good thing. I had also forgotten how long the last thirteen or so miles seemed. Never-ending rollers. All I wanted was lunch at that point :p . We rode with a friend who hadn't done a lot of training lately, though she's an experienced rider. Muscle memory served her well, though we dialed it back a bit. Even still, I was pretty pooped at the end of the ride.

I didn't have a camera on me, so I was glad to see the pictures the rest of you took. Great shots. And congrats to Ellen, John, and Amie on completing their first century - and a tough one at that!

Trying to decide whether to attempt the century next year. Got to do more hill work. Lots more.

Yeah, I noticed that too. Sad but true, elevation gain readings from different computers vary a great deal.

For my own record keeping & gauging my progress, I go by my own computer, knowing that it generally gives elevation gain readings on the low end of the range when compared to the elev gain readings for the same ride from others' computers.

But I figure it's all relative anyhow.

I doubt I would do this one again, though I'm sure I'll do some of these roads again. If anybody asks, I'd probably recommend the metric route over the full 100 mile route, the metric seemed to spend more time on roads with less traffic.

I wanted to stay to make sure Jo made it in, but I had plans to meet my mom (who lives in Petaluma) for dinner at Dempsey's Alehouse. I had come in about an hour later than I had hoped for (and told her to plan for), and she's the type to WORRY to the point of making alarming phone calls. I'm glad to hear you all made it in and would do it again!

Hey Deanna - glad you had a kind of good ride ...

I knew you were going to Dempsey's afterwards, and I was going to suggest we all head there, but to be honest by that time Lyon's sounded sooo much simpler.

And I was pretty certain we could get milkshakes there.

I was wondering where you got milkshakes. I had to settle for beer (carb-replenishment).

Hey Deanna - great seeing you ever so briefly on Whittaker Bluff or whatever that hill I hate is called! I wish I could have (1) actually hung with you on the steep part - how do you do that w/a double?? :p and (2) chatted a bit more. Had to catch Mike as this was our one and only real "ride" together for some time!

It was good to see you too and I was quite surprised to hear my name called out on that climb. I have a compact double, otherwise FORGET IT. It's difficult for me to chat when my lungs are about to pop out. Too bad the routes diverged so soon after that.

LOL - oh thats lucky if it was a plain double I might have had to add you to my "We dont like her" list.:D
Actually though you would be in pretty good company on that list with MP, SK, V, and lately ubber strong Jobob had to be added. Kim denies being strong but after riding with her again she has been added:p . I also noticed Leebob was being a little too sprightly on the flats and if he keeps that up I may have to add him too. Its just as well Im going back to Aust soon because Im running out of people in Norcal to like.:D HEE HEE!!

Wow!!! What amazing stud and stud-ettes you all are!

Well done Dr. Badger and friends on your first century!

And well done to the metric crowd for fighting the winds like that!

Reading about those hills and headwinds, all I can say is    you guys rock scientists!

I woke up Saturday morning with so much darned tail bone pain, and I decided that if it hurt that much having ridden only 3 flat saddle-adjustment miles the day before, the situation was not likely to improve on a more challenging 30-mile ride :( . I was so bummed about it that we just ended up going home, and therefore I wasn't there to cheer you all in after your triumphant rides. But I was thinking of you guys all day, and checking my watch and thinking things like "well, the metric guys must be about done now".

I'm glad at least some of you would ride it again, because I do want to ride it next year :o

And when I'm back from vacation late next week, I'll be making a visit to my doctor to see what the heck is going on with the tail bone and ankle situation.

Hee hee and here I was thinking that you wanted to stay on my friend list. Hmm seeing your Seven might have had me add you to the 'We dont like her list'.:D
Seriously though mate we figured you might have decided to give the ride a miss with the pain situation and we were glad for you. That ride in those conditions was not one you would have wanted to do in pain. I think you were very smart to listen to your body and give it a miss. Im sure you will have plenty of people to ride with next year. Cyclists are like mothers we forget the pain after awhile.:D

Hey Ann-
I was sorry to hear that your tailbone was giving you so much trouble such that you couldn't ride. But I am glad that you are going to get it looked at. Maybe they have one of those funny dougnut pillow things for you to put on your bike seat :D  :D

Even if you can't ride, I hope you can still come hang out with us on Sept 2!

Let me know if you end up not riding, I'll be taking BART up then catching the ferry to Larkspur. We can travel together...and wait in the bar....:D
