Trek 6700 WSD???

Hi- I'm in the process of looking for a new mountain bike. (See http://forums.teamestrogen.com/showthread.php?t=14644 for details.)

I test rode a Trek 6700 WSD yesterday. It seems to fit well (and the reach measurement matches what my road bike fitter recommended). (The handlebars were too wide, but they said that could be fixed easily by cutting them shorter.)

This was a little more than I meant to spend (given that I've never really mountain biked before and can't be sure that I'll like it). But on the other hand it probably makes sense for me to spend a little more now (instead of risking not liking it because I don't like the bike, or loving it but needing to upgrade in a year or two).

Oh and the alternatives included a Rockhopper (I didn't actually test ride it but they have a bike that's probably my size that I could try) and a Stumpjumper (hard tail) (I sat on the large Stumpjumper- the reach was too long- they could order the medium but they're willing to give me a little more of a discount on the Trek since it's a floor model- and the Stumpjumper is more expensive in the first place).

Anyone out there ride a 6700???

I ride a 6700 and love it! I ride it as much as I can. Spring had been cruel here in Cincinnati and we haven't done much riding on the trails. Too wet. Just ogt back from Michigan though and had a fabulous time!

What I like about it -
The fit is awesome. Fits like a glove. I ride a 52cm mens road bike (it was on sale so we "made" it fit) and my mountain bike is truly a different animal. The front shock is great. Didn't take me long to figure out how to jump over logs and roots.

Shifting took a bit to get use to and I'm still learning. With me not riding it all the time, I have to relearn how to shift the first few minutes but it's getting easier.

My BF doesn't like the brakes. He says they're hard to adjust unlike his but then my are hydraulic Juicy 3's and his are BB7's mechanicals (he's got better brakes)

You won't go wrong with the 6700. I had never mtb'ed before and was in your situation. Let's not get something too high end if I didn't like the sport, but don't get too entry level as to not have a good time.

Handlebars are made that way on purpose; that way you can cut them down to your specs. Make sure you tell them if you want bar-ends or not. This will change how much they cut off the handlebars.
