I use Beverly Nutrition's Muscle Provider (Chocolate Flavor) protein powder to make my shakes. You just mix one scoop with water.
I drink one after every hard workout.
Very, very healthy and they taste just like Nesquik Chocolate Milk.
The only problem is that the powder is expensive. I pay $34.95 for 2 pounds - enough for 32 shakes.
But I think that they are worth the cost.
The cheapest place to buy them is online at DPS Nutrition.

i really like isopure.
it says that 2 scoops is a serving, but that is 50 grams and your body can't handle that much at once, so i use one scoop.
it has a good taste(right now i have the peach mango flavor), it disvolves really easily in water, and is 100% whey protein.

yogurt smoothies are nice.
Throw some plain yogurt and frozen fruit and milk (and sugar if you want it) into a blender and buzz it.
Sometimes I add a blob of tofu if I want a little extra oomph.

That's too funny, that is EXACTLY what I use is the Beverly International Choc Muscle Provider also. They sponsor my dad in his bodybuilding comps, so I get a good deal on it, but it's worth every penny.
You can also make a brownie out of them, for those sweet tooth cravings!
Does anyone know of a commercially available vegan protein powder? Every one I've found had casein and/or whey in it.

Maybe this?
http://nutiva.com/products/0_protein.php
Ingredients: 100% raw organic hemp protein powder. NO hexane, gluten, dairy, lactose or sweeteners.

Thanks for the lead michelem, it has albumin protein which is from eggs so still no dice for me. I've been searching but think I'm going to end up making an at-home version with fruit and soy milk.

Help me out on this one...that's what I always thought--albumin equals egg white--but....when I read link posted that wasn't how I read it. So, I did some web surfing and found several sources of hemp protein that said it was vegan. Hmmm...more surfing and I find sites like http://www.globalhempstore.com/hemp-food/why-hemp-foods.html that say, "Hemp is not only delicious, but comprised of smaller-chain edistin and albumin protein, making it the gold standard of plant foods."
Then...enter wikipedia (not always a reliable source)....albumen (note the "e") is egg white; albumin (with an "i") is a general term for a specific type of protein. So, hemp powder is vegan

I got the same confusing results. I'm going to check with my nutritionist at my next appointment and see if I can get some clarification.

You could check out Alive by Nature's Way. It is made from pea and rice protein. I bought it for my vegan teenage daughter who is allergic to dairy. I warn you though, it is green and hard to look at while swallowing. The taste is not the greatest either.

Thanks Steph, it sounds kinda gross but I'll look it up and give it a go. :D
Given the recent recalls of pet food because of tainted rice protein concentrate from China, I would ask the company where it gets its RPC before buying anything.
For further details on the pet food recalls and the recent issues with RPC and wheat gluten, go to www.itchmo.com.

Here she goes again...;)
I have read a fair bit on protein supplements, and most companies are actually MARKETING companies, that have nothing to do with health food at all. The thing is, most sources of protein powder are waste product from various industries and some chemist managed to find a way to sell it.
Most people DO NOT NEED extra protein in their diet. Some do, but can easily get it from actual food not a powder. ie eat some protein at dinner and lunch kind of thing.
If you want a good post workout drink, just make the smoothie with some yogurt, milk (either from dairy or another source - this will depend on your tolerance and allergies) and fruit and skip the powder. Unless you have some kind of digestive issue that your body is not processing protein properly, NO ONE actually needs the powder.
another of my two cents.

Hi Queen- the one we have been using is Vega Complete whole food meal replacement- it has 25g of protein, total carbs 21g (9g fibre,2g sugar) fat 9g.
It uses hemp and yellow pea protein.
good luck in your search:)

I agree. :) Smoothies are wonderful and refreshing and I know for me, I consume plenty of forms of protein in my regular daily intake of food.

Thanks Pika! Normally the whole foods I ingest take care of my nutritional requirements but I've been feeling a need for more protein since I switched to a plant bases diet. A little bump in the form of a powder should help.
I use Rainbow Light Protein Energizer vanilla,, iherb.com has the best price, and it is vegan check it out: www.iherb.com

I like GNC's 50-gram slam. Vanilla is my preferred flavor, though chocolate is nice. I found banana to be too sickeningly sweet.
FYI, since your digestive tract can only digest about 25 gm. of protein at a time, you really get two servings out of one can. It's only 240 calories for 50 gm. of protein. It also has a lot of good nutrients/vitamins in it, too.
I wholeheartedly agree with Han regarding protein intake.
chocolate milk [/color] (][color=blue) has been shown to be one of the best (if not the best) recovery drink there is.

I put a scoop of protein powder in my sports drink to make a recovery drink. I can't handle that much yogurt or other milk products. I get my protein from TrueProtein.com. You can formulate your own mix if you want or just choose from a bunch of different protein sources. Mine is 75% whey and 25% soy protein.

I keep hearing this. Why chocolate milk and not just regular skim milk?
From Medscape Medical News-
...coauthor Joel M. Stager, PhD, from Indiana University in Bloomington, said in a news release. "Chocolate milk contains an optimal carbohydrate to protein ratio, which is critical for helping refuel tired muscles after strenuous exercise and can enable athletes to exercise at a high intensity during subsequent workouts."
The clinical context and study highlights can be found here (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/524370)
My own study results have shown that chocolate milk is just plain tasty.

My gut isn't always pleased with milk products, so on a whim I bought an envelope of Nutiva hemp protien powder last year. Forgot all about it, and now it's expired.
I think I'll eat it anyway.
Will this stuff make you test positive on a drug test?

Rock on! That's my favorite post-workout drink as well, at least when it's warm out. I add a shot of honey to sweeten it.

I do so want to hear that chocolate milk is the perfect recovery drink - yum;)
I either do a yogurt smoothie that comes in a bottle (anything involving the blender is too complex after riding for me) or chocolate milk made with skim milk, with a pinch of salt.
After this weekend's century ride (my first :) ) I downed my las Gu Gel after I finished and it seemed to make a really big difference - no muscle aches or twitches to report at all. I was very happily surprised.

No. If you read the pkg, it'll say it has either '0' or whatever very low amt. of THC. When they do a 'real' drug test, they're looking for amts beyond 'normal' consumption. I.E. if you ate 20 poppyseed muffins *right* before your test, you *might* come up as positive for opiates. Maybe.
For instance, my lip balm contains "10qg/g or less THC"
No idea what a qg is, though.

Are you sure it's not pg=picogram, one trillionth of a gram?
