I own a small but profitable antiques business.
Plus I am a small timber grower.
Plus I manage my financial investments for income.
Plus I take care of my brain damaged husband who is slowly dying and requires 24-hour care, though he is still highly functional in some respects, enough so that I can leave him alone or take him with me when I am engaged in activities outside of the house.
I don't use any of the above to identify myself to others if it is outside the scope of my business. Most people who meet me assume I am retired because I rarely discuss what I do. How I spend my time to make money or my responsibilities as a care giver do not identify me because the totality of who I am is more than what people can ever see or perceive.
I don't go nuts from the stress because I bike everyday.

After 12 years of working with mentally ill homeless adults I'm walking away from it. We had 16,000 cases filed in Indianapolis alone in the six weeks before the new bankruptcy law went into affect in October of 2005, and a total of 35,000 cases for the year. We were one of the busiest courts in the country during that time. In contrast, we had a total of 9,000 cases filed locally in 2006.
I wish I could say the the dramatic decrease reflects improvements in the law or that people are going into less debt, but I don't think that's the case. I just think the change in the law flushed out just about anybody who was thinking of filing, and that it's just a matter of time before numbers go back up. If and when the real estate market falls out--to the point it's affecting not just sub-prime but prime lenders--all hell is going to break lose.

Middle school English teacher (I have my kids for 2 years, gr. 6-7). This is my last year. I put my resignation in last December. I've worked in 7 districts in 2 states over 30 years. I was a special education teacher for 17 of those 30 years, at all levels, but mostly high school. I have basically enjoyed my career, because unlike a lot of teachers, I have changed jobs a lot. I was involved in lots of extra curriculum and committee work, which certainly took its toll on me. During this time I was also a group exercise instructor (10 years), a religious school teacher for first graders (2 years), and on the board of directors of the JCC in Tempe (5 years).
Raised 2 pretty normal sons, too, despite what all those experts tell you about the evils of working mothers!
Now I am ready to play. I want a job with flexible hours and am leaning toward something in the fitness field, since it's the only other thing that even appeals to me. I got the materials to study for the ACE personal trainer cert., but right now it looks overwhelming. I am going to start advertising to do some tutoring in writing/test prep for the fall; around here people pay up to $100.00 an hour. But mostly, I want to ride my bike and be able to travel at a time of year when everyone else is working or at school.
Primarily I identify as a doc (duh). But I am also a Mohel and a breastfeeding "expert". I have started and am involved in various local and state breastfeeding coalitia.

Ooh! Cool! We had one "in the family" ... sorta. Dad's cousin's ex's second wife, but we were all still close friends. She was not only a silversmith, but also a designer of glassware, furniture, light fixtures, and so on. Her family name (Hopea) means silver in Finnish. Sadly, she and just about all her glassware designer colleagues died of lung cancer, probably from silica and heavy metal exposures in the factory.

I don't think it was the silverwork that was the problem. The group who all got cancer shared a history of working in a glass and ceramics factory, and included some of their glassblower design partners. I'd suspect silica, and maybe lead (from crystal work). Her husband has written a gorgeous book about her work. And also books on Indian silver jewelry, on enamelwork, and general silverwork techniques.
And what an impressive gang we biker gals all are! Such broad and complex talents -- individually and in sum. I don't have much to add of my own. Sociology prof., wannabe gardner, sometimes make decent sewn or knit things. My greatest success in life has been the two "kids", but they prob'ly turned out fine in spite of my poor efforts.

I used to be a Master Pastry Chef till I had kids - have two undergrad degrees (creative writing and Anthro/Psych.) and am now doing a Masters in Counselling Psychology. I'm in school all Saturday and home the rest of the week - DH takes the kids on Thursday and Friday so I can get my readings done. It works really well!
But my *main* job till I started the Masters last Fall was SAHM to three kids, who are now 7, 4.5 (DD, the other two are boys) and 2. I am glad I still get the kid fix 3 days a week, and it is so great that DH gets that much time with them. And, yeah, being home is absolutley the hardest thing I ever did! Not coincidentally, also the most worthwhile.
I really enjoyed this thread - cycling clearly attracts a diverse group of talented people, united in their wit!:D

Thooretically, I'm a contract programmer. However, I havn't written any code (computer instructions) for pay in over two years.
what I actually do:
I look at the code the other programmers submit and make sure that they don't have any obvious error and adhere to our style standards . I get to spend 9 hours saying things like "You can't promote this. It has compile errors" "How did you test this?" "That SQL won't update anything" "You're x minutes for the promotion" (we have a Crisis Du Jour everyday at 5:00).
In addition, I do minor database fixes. The system runs human services (Welfare/TANF,Food Stamps, Medi-cal(Or Medicaid)(Medical insurance for the Poor) for the nation's most populous County (over 9 million and growing!) - the system runs on 7 mainframe(server) computers, and one of my jobs to move cases from one to other so the system will perform better.
I also teach a programming class as a volunteer. The current system is written in what I call "The Rondey Dangerfield of programming languages" - COBOL, and I'm trying to update my cv by learning Java and Java stuff
I even find time to ride my bike:)

I am very involved with helping to set up new Center for Abused Children that will provide a "home environment" to do the interviews, counlseling and the exam. I love my job and I love all the nurses and MD's I work with. Hospital politics and health care is upsetting these days, but our patients make it worth it. I have been a nurse for 15 years most of which has been in Management. It is at the bed side that you get your cup filled so I refuse to do full time management. I also teach Pediatric Advance Life Support.
I am a runner and a biker, but I really love to the tend my beautiful 20 month old grandson! It is to best time in the world and the most fulfilling.
Hats off to all of you stay at home moms!!!

Basically, my software monitors the status of our business and hospital information systems. I used to be a boat builder in Australia (for 5 years) then the misogeny got to be too much for me to handle. Also I went from building traditional wooden boats (which I love) to building carbon fiber racing boats (which is not so fun).
I missed Alaska so much that I had to move back 2 years ago and have been a substitute teacher in the local school district. I sub for all grades and all classes but mostly for spec. ed and a lot with incarcerated kids (where I was today). On the whole I like working with the kids in the sped. program as well as the incarcerated kids.
But teaching is way too hard for me to stick with it. Kudos to those who last at it. I'm hoping to go to grad school this year- not sure if I got in yet- but want to study maritime archaeology. I check the mail everyday with my fingers crossed...

I am an Army Officer. 14 years total, enlisted, then became a Warrant Officer. Gave up promotion and left the active army to the reserves, 3 years ago to spend time with my new born. (Could not leave her at 31 days old to go to Korea for a year) Had another baby, now totals 3 yard apes running around here. The reserves called me up full time for the past year, so I have decided to return to the active until retirement pay eligible.

In NC, they'll let attorneys in the Federal Courthouses with cell phones. No one else (except employees) gets to bring in a cell phone - camera or no. Dunno about PDA's, though I think I've gone in with mine (and my cell phone has a record feature - not that I know how to work it until I don't want to). It seems strange to me...

After grad school, I was a research engineer for Star Wars program. Resigned, after two years. It was emotionally difficult. You work in an environment sorta like the spaceship in 2001 space oddesy. White, clean, with environmental control so it was never too cold, too hot, too humid. Then after work step outside to the real world of grime, police siren, homeless people, mental people roaming the street... sorta like Charles ****ens world of 19th century England. The contrast was just too much for me.
Anyway, I've been an electrical engineer for last 20+ years. I design and manage a design team. We design micro chips. Things that go into a cell phones, radio ID tags, IR temperature scanners... Just really tedius.
Then my fun work is running my part time baking business. Money sucks but hey I get to talk to real people. Engineers are impossible to talk to.
I also foster baby kittens. Nursing kittens to larger "teenager" kittens. Then I cry when I give them away to their permanent homes.

I worked as a tech at a practice in Dorchester (one of the poorer neighborhoods of Boston) for 17 years, and have spent the past 7 years in a practice in one of the higher income suburbs of Boston. I've gotten black eyes, had my lip ripped open from nose to lip, had cat bites twice require IV antibiotics for 48 hours, also 2 episodes of Cat Scratch Disease that lead to lymph node biopsies. On the good days I just pick up dogs. I've dropped my floor to table lifts to 70 lbs, no amount of Kegel's assure my continence at higher weights. My body is feeling the wear & tear of my occupation too much and I'm planning on "retiring" next year even though I will only be 61. First, let me state I'm insane for no sane person would do my job, really! I'm a middle school science teacher. Wait, let me add I teach 7th graders. You know those little ones with raging hormones. The ones that think school is for socializing, who needs an education. I typically get in the way of their socialing (this translates into "you're mean" which means I'm doing my job) thus hindering the development of their networking skills. I must be crazy to think that my discussion of genetics is more important than knowing who just broke up or who was sent to the office for sticking french fries up their nose at lunch. Back to the insane part - I must be for I've been doing this job (and loving every minute of it, well most) for the past 18 years.

I would think, given enough time, that a banana slug could devour a patch of okra. What can an okra do? :)
You know there is a team called the Fighting Okra - Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. I lived there for 5 years.
My job - Molecular Biologist - was on fish, now bees. DNA is DNA as they say. My focus now is detecting genes associated with mite resistance. No grants to write - the joy of being a fed.

Yeah. And in high school I was a Lambkin. Nice. Embarassed on both accounts.

What is an Aggie? ME!
An Aggie is term for people who attend agricultural schools. The A&M in Texas A&M University stands for Agricultural and Mechanical. I guess it is kind of like a farmer, at A&M we have a yell (kind of like a cheer) called "Farmers Fight".
Not all land grant or A&M schools are Aggies, NM State is a Land Grant School (same as Texas A&M) and they are Aggies too. OK State is a land grant and they are the Cowboys. VT Tech is a land grant and they are Hokies. I could go on if I kept googling. :D
CC- You are paying attention. :)
Are you serious?!? How well do vegetables fight? You must instill fear into the hearts of opposing teams (not). ;)
Hey, Okra is spiny, sticky icky when raw, slimy when boiled & tasty when fried! We do okay for a small state university. Last fall we beat my sister's much larger university (Stephen F. Austin State in Nacogdoches, TX, the lumberjacks- their mascot is Ax-some Jack. Their enrollment is about 12K, ours is 4K).
Look at that face-GRRR

I know about those okra... get 'em fried at The Hollywood in Robinsonville, Miss. Remember Marc Cohn singing about that place? It really is great.
Grew up in the Miss Delta, from Memphis down to Arkabutla and eventually Greenville. Still got "kin" in all three places. Escaped to the Wild West of Wyoming and it's hard to imagine going back (heat, mosquitoes, a wee bit of a crazy class system:eek: )
I'm the features editor at a small (but sorta famous in the industry) weekly newspaper. The best part of my job is writing, editing and publishing great features. But I also am the traditional "society editor" writing about whose kids made the honor roll, what those cute lil' cub scouts are up to this week and having to try to console people submitting obituaries.
If I were working in Misssissippi, I'd also be writing about debutante balls.:D

Mr. Bee works for LSU and we are big Tigers fans! It too bad you weren't on TE when I was up there. Ah well. I know a good 7-mile route to ride for laps if you're interested. Cool--- I'd love to get directions for your route! I live near Bear Pen Park & usually ride in the neighborhood, then down memorial drive to Boyle . . . or over to the campus & make loops around the quad. I teach 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade art and A.P. 3-D. I have been teaching 22 years. Its a good job and I get to ride my bike everyday. I also am a mother to a dachshund, a cheeweenie, and a jackaroodle.

Well, I quess I fit in with the classic New England tale... I have had many careers HA! I used to coach at the Collegiate level and loved that, managed many retail stores, worked as a carpenter and have been a bike mechanic for the past 15 years... which I absolutely love!! In the offseason, besides doing bike repair, I work at a ski resort and am a custom ski/snowboard boot fitter. And of course, I'm also restoring an older home on the side:):)

After reading some of the amazing things you women do I feel inadequate! I'm an ER doc in a small resort town. I worked in big city (Detroit, L. A.) hospitals for many years until I got burnt out. Now I work in a great place that's only really busy during ski season. I still find it hard to believe that I've been a doc for 25 years. I CAN'T be that old.:o
I'm also house staff to 2 dogs:
Toby (Sir Tobias Rufflebutt), a rough collie,
Cameron (The Court Jester), a smooth collie,
and the cats:
Houston (We Have a Problem) and
Riley (The Puff).
