As this I am experiencing "elevation" for the first time, and I'm kinda type A about data, I thought I'd start this thread.
Thought it would be a nice, main location to post those great elevation profiles I see floating around TE.
Veronica, jobob... all you other climbing divas?
As a first request: anybody know the elevation gain for Tunnel Rd to Skyline to Pinehurst (I think it's still Oakland up there)?

Check out Bikely www.bikely.com . You can map your route and it will give you an elevation profile.
Here's the route I was riding when I met up with you and Trek on Sunday:

(except I stopped at Sunol)
Click on Show (directly under the Bikely logo), then click on Elevation Profile.

http://www.motionbased.com/
There is a flood of info going into Motion-Based. In MB you can see people's actual results from their Garmins plus the elevation profiles. Basic accounts are free.
I search on city or key words all the time. For instance, all of us on Party Pardee Saturday reported lower than usual elevation gains (probably due to barometric changes). Last night I found 6 downloads from Saturday and another 8 from previous (probably volunteer) rides that reported much higher gains. The numbers looked more in line with my past years' results so I reported the same 4,100' that I always have and don't feel like I cheated in anyway.
You can search www.bikely.com (which Jobob mentioned the same way) and find profiles and elevation gains. The elevation gains in Bikely appear to be somewhat in the ballpark of real life, maybe a bit high but not bad.
www.routeslip.com - similar to bikely.com, slower to use, can't edit routes and elevation profiles are skyhigh, but can be a source for route ideas.

For the Geysers/Pine Flat ride we did this weekend, one guy uploaded his Garmin data to Google Earth so we can re-"ride" the ride again - it created this great little map which moves you along, you can tilt it and ride up the climbs and everything.
Super geeky cool.
The link's at home or I'd attach it here.

I wondered about that. :) I just always use what the Polar says, I figure that way the data is always skewed in the same way. I know sometimes it has to register too high.

If you're riding in the north bay, check out:
http://www.srcc.com/cgi/srcc/profiles.pl
One of our club members compiled this data with his Garmin. If you click on the profile, you get the details of start-stop points and directions.
Edited to add: Note the scale varies from profile to profile, you'll also get the scale when you click on the profile.

Maybe, but it and my Ciclo seem to measure fairly similarly and always less than the organizers claim for the ride. I did a little research this time because it was more than just a little low compared to other years and all of us had the same low results. Motion-Based had very high numbers with the low end being more in-line with my previous years'. I figured the law of averages was sufficient.
MP's Ciclo is always lower than my Ciclo. It's just weird.
Vastly changing weather patterns like we had on Saturday tend to skew the numbers.
Now, let's compare temperature readings.

Another really cool program for mapping SF Bay area rides is called BikeMaster. It was developed by Don Axtell, a member of snap's & my club, ACTC.
With Bikemaster you can draw up routes in seconds by selecting the pre-loaded roads. The downside to this is that not every Bay area road is in the database, but it seems that most of the roads that cyclists generally use in the Bay area are in there. You can map out routes and get pretty accurate distances, elevation profiles, total climb, and it will even estimate the time the ride will take based on your average speed and how long you generally spend on rest stops. And you can print out very nice looking cue sheets.
You can download a trial version (w/o all the functions); the full version is $30.

MP, I uploaded the gpx file from your Atlas/Veeder ride to bikely. Worked slick except there were so many waypoints that trying to edit was a huge hassle.
If I'm looking for entertainment I suppose I could download V's dbc file, re-load (as a copy), edit it (since it has fewer waypoints) and then you could be load to your Garmin.

Yeah, problem is I don't want to try to look at the Garmin for directions because it's going to be hard to see when I need it (in the dark). There's a light, but I don't want to burn the extra battery if I don't have to.
Just going over and over the parts of the route that I am not familiar with in these different routing thingies is going to be very helpful. For the 600, I plotted the parts I didn't know in Topo and then "rode" the whole route in Google Earth. It just really helps to be familiar with the route. I also hope to be riding with Jim during the tricky night parts and he's done the ride before.

For Vacaville -
--Come down Cardiac and hang a right at Pardehsa's Store (the 3-way to Lake Solano) and you know this intersection
--Go south for several miles up a false flat with a few rollers. The top will be Cantelow Rd (1st turn to the left).
-- Stay straight and continue several miles on a long slow downhill past the 2nd road to your left.
--3rd rd on your left is Foothill and the biggest intersection of the 3.
--This is the key: once you swoop around at the beginning of Foothill, you will essentially begin a series of turns that always take you east or north. The one exception is the I-80 overpass at Sparling and Pedrick which you know from the Fall 200k.
--Once you're over 1-80, it's the same return route. Stay on Tremont until you run into the T and turn north. Last leg take you right to the finish.

Pinehurst is the middle bump in the group of 3 hills between miles 30-40. Except I did the part of Pinehurst south of Canyon Rd, whereas you rode the part north of Canyon. So you'll just have to take me along next time you go.
