I'm posting this to avoid a hijack of the "How do you explain to one of them..." threads on the cycling board where the interest in life expectancy was raised (particularly given reference to a high mortality rate for Research PHd's...which honestly shocks me)
So, here's a life expectancy counter:
http://gosset.wharton.upenn.edu/mortality/perl/CalcForm.html
It doesn't have precise occupational tables, but it considers many factors including habits, health, exercise, etc.
My life expectancy is 86+ years...but I'm adopted and don't have a family medical history.

According to this calculator I'll be dead in three months.
Um, ok.

According to this I'll live to 89.1 Funny thing is, I put in a different state - Arizona - and I'll live ever so slightly longer 89.3. Louisiana isn't exactly known for having the best medical care, or diet. I drink Mississippi River water (treated), that flows past numerous petrol and chemical plants, aside from everything else that's draining from 1/3 of north america. We joke about being in a thrid world country, and after Katrina, it's probably true, especially down here on the coast.
So let's see, I can max out the credit cards round about 88.... Go out in flaming glory!

Moderate red wine consumption has been linked to lower risks of heart disease, I think.
My life expectancy is 91.12 years. My husband's is 86.75. Mine is probably lowered because I have a first degree relative with breast cancer, and his because of family histories of stroke and diabetes. I'm three years older than him so this leaves me only two years to find a hot young second husband, damn it.

According to this quiz. I'm going to die in the next 3 to 7 years.
Interesting, seeing as the only risk factors I have are heart disease and stroke in my family, I exercise like crazy and I'm amoungst the fittest of the population. Diet's good. I'm married and don't sleep around.
I have had 4 of the major stressors happen in the last 12 months. Do they really weight that stuff that heavily. I can't imagine that I'm ready to keel over. I'm only 35.
I posted this just to give an example of how skewed some of these quizes are. Very interesting tho.

It is interesting, since I had a stroke and a couple of TIAs (I am 37) and apparently going to live to 104. But I had no stressors, so maybe the quiz weighted those heavily? My dad sent me a really long Real Life Test and that had me living to 106. Go figure.

My life expectancy is 93.86 years. If I lost 60 pounds, it would add one month to my life. So I guess I can stop obsessing about losing weight, huh?

91.6
hmm. I'll take it. My father died at 47 of a heart attack, but I like these numbers much better. My brothers and I are all in our forties with that "magic" number 47 looming closer and closer. Talk about a major stressor...

93.39 years.
So...are we all a bunch of healthy freaks, or does this seem a little ... um, generous? Consider, the current average lifespan for women in the US today is...what? 77?

Well, the 77 figure includes those who didn't make it so far (premature deaths). All of those who make it to, say, 30 have a good chance of living longer than average (depending on their risk factors of course).

I'd also say that everyone on this site exercises and probably the majority of us, while not perfect, do try to be conscious of our diets. That in itself puts us ahead of a lot of the population.
I learned that my life expectancy was decreased slightly due to stress. My dad was in the hospital! It's not like we can control some of these things. I also enjoyed the "do not know" options, especially for questions like "where do you reside". Heh. If you don't know, I wonder if that increases or decreases the age?
I was 90-something, I don't remember exactly. It makes sense because my grandmother lived to 97!

me too.
I've got pretty good genes. I think everyone in my parents generation have made it or will make it to their 80's. my paternal grandparents made it to their 90's. Maybe this explain why my uncle survived liver cancer and my sister is surviving a stage 4 breast cancer. I'm not sure whether to believe her but anyway they must have good genes. :p And on my mother's side my grandmother made it into her 90's I think. My grandfather, well he was a dud. Died prematurely from bleeding ulcer at youg age of 50 something I think. So I may get to see my 100th birthday. I'm not sure if this is a good thing. Its bad enuf that I can't figure all the fancy stuff on the cell phone, MP3 players and iPOD. iPOD nano was a gift and I still don't have any music loaded on it. (and I'm supposed to be an electrical engineer)
