I got it for the pocket. The blurb in the Rivendell catalog said that the pocket is perfect for BART tickets. My commute goes like this:
screetch to halt at BART station
lean bike on booth
try to sling pack off
unzip jacket or vest
try to remember which pocket the ticket is in
find ticket
swipe ticket
reverse the clothing assembly
dash to train
repeat in reverse at exit and on the way home
the idea of the ticket right there in front! I had to get it.
This is a great bag. Two rear pockets face you perfect for the phone, keys...whatever. It feels very odd riding without a pack or even anything in the jersey pockets, everything I need fits here, even the mini pump. The canvas and leather smells great. There's a water proof version, this one's resistant. But since I don't often ride in the rain.
My commute today kinda sucked at times, darn evil cars...but the bike bag worked great. Here it's pictured stopping at my favorite Oakland coffee shop.

I have the same bag (thank you, sweetie!) and used it for my commute yesterday. I was able to carry not only all the bike repair/emergency stuff, but also my wallet, phone, keys, bandana, snack, and A PAIR OF SHOES.
All on my handlebars, all in the bag. No interference with my bars, was able to steer and switch from drops to hoods and such no problem. It was pretty wild getting everything in that bag, and not having to carry stuff in pockets or in fanny pack.
Bag did not swing around when I was standing and climbing, either.
Nice bag!

This sounds like those teensy circus cars with all the clowns climbing out. Or like the old student stunt of packing people into a phone booth. Or ... do you wear small shoes? If it isn't any of those, then I neeeeed a bag like this.

How exactly does this attach? Looks neat, but not big enough to carry my laptop. *sigh*

Looks like a bar bag with straps around the bars. How wide is it?

The shoes are size 9.
Bag dimensions: (approx) 31cm wide, 21 cm tall, 9 cm deep. Plus there are two very expandable cargo pockets on the back side (facing the rider)
It's a bar bag with a wooden rod/shaper on the inside near the top edge. The two leather straps that attach it to the bars go into the bag itself and are anchored around the wooden rod.
The wool waterproof versions have extra rings sewn into the sides so you can tie the sides of the bag to the bars so the bag won't swing. I had no issues with mine swinging. The bike cables run between the two cargo pockets and pretty much anchored mine in place.

The straps with buckles rather than velcro look nifty too.

We got them at the Rivendell place, so we were able to fondle all the bags. We both liked the waxed canvas the best.
