Yes, that's Enza, who I trapped in 2001. She and her 3 sisters were totally wild, had ringworm and all sorts of other great bugs. I trapped their wild mom
and let her loose again, I tamed all the kittens and all her sisters found great homes.
Enza is the coolest cat, she chose me. So I kept her

I know someone who thought that Goldfish crackers were good for you because they're "vegetarian" and he would lose weight.

Even if we really aren't defining thread drift (aka TD), I think we're giving a fine example of it.

OMG! FOUR TDs!!! This one wasn't even there yesterday when I logged off, and today it's already up to 4 pages  When will I ever find time to get out on my bike now?

Today's after-work plan is to give RubySlipperz and Big Red their Spring cleanings, including changing Big Red's pedals to semi-clipless (one side platform) and maybe even giving per a new saddle (if I find a good one at the LBS on my way home). Forecast for tomorrow is rain, but forecast for Saturday is sunny again. Now if I can just get myself off the net long enough for a ride on Saturday, I'll have something to post about when I get home. :o

Nothing is special about Amarillo. I think singers just think it sounds like a beautiful place. The town is flat and dry and flat. Now Austin is a Texas town to love!

At 5' 1 1/2" I was pretty happy at 120 ish (usually 122)....

At 130ish (132 last I checked) I am trying to accept myself, but wishing for closer to 125.

It's really quite ironic that I've been diagnosed with a disease whose primary symptom is usually dramatic weight loss. Can you imagine? Just a few pounds....it would be such a relief! heehee

Actually, if I could just get my energy to stay for good I know that I can lose it - with energy I can bike, with biking I can lose weight! I can't wait!!

Hey, folks!

The new outside living room is beginning to take shape. I have erradicated the lilac (lots of digging - that was fun in the warm sun!) and tomorrow we will remove the debris, do more digging and levelling and try to figure out what our temporary cost-free plan is. We'd like to use the area this year, but it will probably be next year or the year after before DH installs the outdoor gas firepit, and we can afford to put proper rocks down, etc. We might decide to pay a little less down on our debts in order to do the rock this year, but we'll be sticking with the cheap plastic furniture for now.....etc.

And the peach tree looks a fright. I bet it has been 8 years or longer since it has been pruned. Since we have no idea what we are doing, it may not recover. We enjoyed having a few peaches last year, but I could easily do with twenty peaches or so, not the hundreds we got last year. Sad thing was, the tree lost several large branches due to the weight. Apparently we should have thinned the peaches out.

Time to get the veggies cooking. BBQ steak, too. yummy

My last dog was awesome. He loved to sleep and wouldn't even think of getting up until you were already up. Unless he had some sort of very rare emergency situation. My dog before that, had DH up at the crack of dawn. In winter in Edmonton, that's no big deal. In summer, that means 4:30 or 5 AM!! Thank goodness DH would walk her, feed her and come back to bed. I just had to roll over and go back to sleep.

Body Worlds is coming to Portland soon. I'm definitely going.

Of course I should clarify. Dogs wake me up. I let them out, I use the bathroom, I let them in, they go back to bed. On a weekday, it's usually time to be up anyway, and I do yoga all on my own while the rest of the family sleeps. I should do this on weekends, too, but then I'd miss out on "cuddle" time. ;)

It was a good cuddle today. ;) ;)

Anybody get April fooled? I thought maybe it was a joke when DH phoned to say I had to pick him up because he'd had a flat about 20k from here. But it wasn't a joke. He'd really had a flat on his way to H€ll. Still, it was a convenient one in terms of timing. I'd just got in from pruning the currant bushes and had not yet gone out again. I drove out and picked him up, making it back home just in time for coffee at the neighbors'.

When we got back from coffee, I washed the kitchen floor and made supper* while DH, unasked and unannounced, Spring cleaned all of our bikes. :D RubySlipperz lookes absolutely jewellike, and Big Red is pretty gleaming too, though (s)he badly needs a new saddle.

*cassava melon, tomato/fresh basil/marinated feta salad, mashed carrots-and-potatoes, and thick-sliced ham steamed on top of the c&p as they boiled. A menu I learned while on a low-fiber diet. Should work for the gluten-challenged too.

I'm pleased (in an angst filled gruesome way) to read on Wikipedia that all the doners for Body World were "willing donors". Don't know if it was that I read or heard that the donors were prisoners of some sort and well....that means not exactly willing. Either way not sure how I feel about it for art or education. I suppose if it inspires someone to learn more about medicine or to take better care of themselves....maybe it's all good.

There are two body shows making the rounds. One has "willing donors" the other is mostly executed Chinese prisoners. The prisoner one is the one that's here in Seattle. Had a long discussion about it with one of the PT student interns at our clinic. He was boycotting the show because of the $$ paid to the Chinese government for the bodies and the shady documentation.

We (mostly DH) pruned the peach tree, and some mystery trees at the back of the yard. I moved the peony, hydrangea and english ivy. We hauled all the branches and cuttings out to the front lawn for chipping when the guys come around. Can't remember if that is this week or next week. We moved some stuff around in the carport and changed the position of the BBQ so it will be adjacent to the "outdoor living room". We hauled all the bags of leaves and other rakings to the curb also, for pickup - hopefully this week.

The dogs had a run in the park. 'Cuda has not licked his foot today. He'll have to wear the cone when we go to work tomorrow though.

We installed the new light in the kitchen. It looks magnificent. :D

I made a nice dinner with loads of vegetables, and chicken in a home made curry sauce.

And DH and I spent some time with the mardis gras mala's, and did a pseudo meditation session. And he wants to do it again tomorrow.

Now, if only I could focus on assignment number three of my course.

All in all it was a good weekend, despite that there was no time on the bike. Hopefully we'll get a ride in this week.

Hoping for good evening weather.

Good morning, Duck! You're right, and it's a risk I've had to take. I'm not terribly worried, though. When we moved in in June last year, there was no evidence that it had bloomed at all last year. And when my SIL, the award winning landscape designer, gave her recommendations for what to do with our overgrown yard, it was the only plant she recommended I move. When she said it was a peony, I was shocked. :p It didn't look like anything to me at the time. Besides, it was right in the middle of the corner we'll be developing as our "outdoor living room", so it had to go. It's now in a sunnier part of the yard, which I hope it likes, and as long as it grows, even if it does not bloom, I will be happy. Really, I'll be amazed at everything that survives and thrives under my care. I am so not a green thumb!

Ha! I forgot all about BJ. :o My computer died and with it all my links and passwords. Anyway, my biking is not going well. :( I hate the trainer, but I need to regain balance before setting out in traffic or even around other riders. My balance has been difficult to regain. The word "cake" caught my eye. Please, please share the recipe.

Simnel cake is traditionally made for Mothering Sunday but most people eat it at Easter now. The 11 balls represent the Apostles (minus Judas) but some people put 12 on to include Jesus.

Well, here is the recipe that I am going to try tonight. I'll have to see how it matches up to my Mum's.
The amounts are all given as weights, if you use measuring cups, then it will need converting, if I have time later I can try to do the conversions.

Bron (hooray, I can drift too :D )

Ingredients
110g/4oz butter (or margarine, but not the low-fat stuff)
110g/4oz soft brown sugar
3 eggs, beaten
150g/5oz plain flour
pinch of salt
½ tsp ground mixed spice (optional)
350g/12oz mixed raisins, currants and sultanas
55g/2oz chopped mixed peel
½ lemon, grated rind only
1-2 tbsp apricot jam
1 egg, beaten for glazing

For the almond paste: (Marzipan) or you can just buy some decent quality marzipan).
125g/4oz caster sugar
125g/4oz ground almonds
1 egg, beaten
½ tsp almond essence

Method
1. To make the almond paste: place the sugar and ground almonds in a bowl. Add enough beaten egg to give a fairly soft consistency. Add the almond essence and knead for a minute until the paste is smooth and pliable. Roll out a third of the almond paste to make a circle 18cm/7in in diameter and reserve the remainder for topping of the cake.
2. Preheat oven to 140C/275F/ Gas 1. To make the cake:cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs until well incorporated and then sift in the flour, salt and spice (if using) a little at a time. Finally, add the dried fruit, peel and grated lemon rind and mix into the mixture well.
3. Put half the mixture in a greased and lined 18cm/7in cake tin. Smooth the top and cover with the circle of almond paste. Add the rest of the cake mixture and smooth the top leaving a slight dip in the centre to allow for the cake to rise. Bake in the preheated oven for 1½ hours. Once baked, remove from the oven and leave to cool.
4. When you are ready to decorate the cake, preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 3. Brush the top of the cooled cake with the apricot jam. Divide the remainder of the almond paste into two; roll out a circle to cover the top of the cake with one half and form 11 small balls with the other half.
5. Place the circle of paste on the jam and set the balls round the edge. Brush all the top with a little beaten egg.
6. Return the cake to the preheated oven for about 10 minutes or long enough for the almond paste to brown.

RD vaca sounds cool...go get a nice little digicam, you'll love it!

Yup, I went out after work - first time I've been invited by any of my co-workers, so I had to say yes! I had a glass of pinot grigio which I haven't had before, and it was a fairly nice wine. And I drank a glass of water too, so that probably helped....we decided to stay for food, and there was, of course, nothing on the menu that actually worked with the "diet" that I'm supposed to be on. I had a swiss mushroom burger. I didn't eat the bun, so it was just the cheese (but swiss should be a bit better than cheddar), the raw tomato, lettuce and pickle....and who knows how the fries were prepared....

so I feel full. And I'll have to have a pair of girl guide cookies, because, what the heck, I just blew the whole eating thing anyway....here I go. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

maybe I'll dip them in goats milk. yeah. that's a good idea

They are flufffy rats.

And they were raised indoors (in Incan times in Peru) as a food staple. I saw a neat show on TV where the archaeologists were talking about how some parts of houses in Incan architecture were designed with guinea pigs in mind. (like with double doors so the piggies couldn't get out) The archaeologists also sampled the current methods of cooking guinea pig.... I'll never get the image out of my head of this one chickie in her fancy mountaineering clothes, munchin' on a guinea pig and exclaiming over how tasty it was.

Guinea pigs are not much like rats. They are more like little goats. they bleat at you when they see you and when they are hungry. Their babies are born ready to run, with all their hair and quite large too. It seems to me they are pregnant for about 3 months; which is epic compared to a rat.
They are also fragile, you can't drop one and expect it to land well.
They are, however, rodents, they have the front teeth that grow all the time like other rodents.
They come in all sorts of colors, and have great hair, but I am not sure that they have much personality.

Doesn't marzipan stick to your teeth?

I feel very out of the loop on the D&D thread. Just like drugs, I didn't do that...

I wonder how many parents would be offended if the teachers who keep guinea pigs in their grade school classroom, also taught the students in that class the incan traditions around the animals.

The sun is shining, it's already above 10 degrees C, and it's the extra day in a long weekend. We'd better get cleaning the house and doing the yard work so our chores are done when we want to go ride!

T-
Marzipan is basically almond paste I think- not nearly as sticky or bad for your teeth as caramel or taffy.

D&D- I don't even know what it is- a computer game I guess. (Down&Dirty? Death&Destruction? Darryl&Darryl?) I got intensely into Myst when it first came out (ancient history), tried one or two other games after that but it seems I had already gotten the computer game bug out of my system. These days I do other things. To each their own.

I did an google for guinea pigs to see their different colors and varieties, and found there were lots of pictures of South Americans roasting them on grills! :D They look kind of creepy roasted with their little feets sticking out at right angles, but I bet they taste good, maybe little little rotisserie hens?

I always put chores, housecleaning and yard work down at the bottom of my list....way after riding my bike.  :p (kitty gossamer tumbleweeds rolling by....)

I planned to make the Marzipan cake today. Yesterday Twin B (DS#3) made Danish Kringle using almond paste. Oooooh so, so yummy! :D

I remember playing Myst a *long* time ago. D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) I never, ever got into. Not my thing.

Not surprisingly, I was a Ranger sort... though I could really get into Clerics. our RPGs were VERY role-play based...

My WOW character "Aryn" was a NE Hunter, with moonsabre Jai. Got to lvl 53... I loved the game when it first came out, but it sounds more and more like they nerfed the *entire game*

*sigh* I'm also a Whitewolf (vampire the masquerade and Werewolf) player. Toreador or Brujah. Aryn was also my Toreador- wore torn jeans and a gauzy hippy shirt... painted in la galleria... Maris was my Brujah, with hand-etched dual pistols, painted biker jacket and leather chaps.

Then there's Cyberpunk...

I played D&D back in 1979/80 before computers. We had a grid on the table and block things to make the walls which we built as we went. We had metal characters which we painted. We'd start a game and couldn't end it until we were out of the dungeon. My character Gwendolyn was a Mage and she managed to stay alive long enough to get enough experience points to be relatively safe. I also had a male character named Tyler who fought for me too. It was handy having him along. :)

I have a feeling I could totally get into playing D&D again. If only there was someone to play with...

My elf ranger was great, but you know how weird little things happen to come up? well one of our quests was all in a dungeon, and she hated a) dungeons b) being forced to wear her armor all the time.

So after this quest, she runs to the shore and pulls all her clothes off. She's sunbathing nekkid when (thanks, DM) one of my friends' characters (who happened to follow his pet chicken everywhere...) stumbled into a group of kobolds who didn't take kindly.

Aryn pulls out her daggers and- I swear I have never rolled so well for a fight. :D

After it all, the DM puts the story together and everyone's looking at me, and it's at the point where I attempt to sheath the daggers that I realize -oh- all my armor's back... at the beach. meaning I'm... :o :o :o

After another couple instances like that, it became a running joke that Aryn was a better fighter nekkid.

...like Sean's character in L5R who couldn't subdue anyone- she'd attempt to kneecap someone and he'd roll so she'd take their leg clean off, or she'd try to crack someone in the head with her (sheathed!) katana, and he'd roll so she broke their skull. ...except when she tried to actually kill people, then he'd somehow manage to roll a critical failure. oops. :o :p

solitaire? ack. Watch out for those papercuts. I hear they can be nasty, when from cards. ..unless you're playing on your computer. ...then bear in mind, sometimes, I swear, they make it so you *can't* win.

I love RPGs... Roleplay can be so much fun... a chance to step out of everyday life and *be* the ranger/vampire/werewolf/kitsune/cleric/paladin/techie/nomad/hunter you always wanted to be.

one could argue "why role play when you can do whatever you want with your life?"

These ones suck all the illness out of the house, thereby increasing the speed of recovery for the 3 who are sick, and sparing the 2 who aren't yet from getting it. They are huge, purple and blue, and fly in wider arcs than your average butterfly. Can you see them yet? ;)

Hugs and, well, you know,
~T~

The butterflies are spectacular, thank you. :)

My son (one of the healthy ones and the baker in the family, made the cake). Oh my. Wonderful goodness!!! :D He added fresh blackberries and raspberries to the top. (insert drooling smilie). This is indeed a recipe that will be made each year. Thank you for sharing this. :D Our family now has another tradition.

Side note: we are a family of science geeks :p , so the measurements in grams were fine. :)

I think it's the NON French/Latin/Italian/Spanish derived words that are harder for most ESL'ers. (Unless they are Chinese etc...in which case ALL english would be hard to learn. ) So much of French/Italian/Spanish are constructed the same way and have words from the same roots.
In Spanish, for instance, when you see the written word, there is only ONE way to pronounce it, there are no weirdo exceptions and rule-breakers in basic pronunciation of letters. None of the infuriating english "I READ that book last week" vs. "I will READ that book next week".....and no "died" and "dyed" or "waited" and "weighted" being pronounced exactly the same way. :(

I do think English is a difficult language (my typos excluded  ) to learn. Norwegian was fun and I still use it. Spanish was simple compared to German, I recall precious little Latin. Russian meant learning how to read and write a completely different alphabet, by then I was up to the challenge. One of my boys is studying French, a language I would like to learn someday.

I have two Easter outfits. Both were purchased when it was in the 80s a week or so ago. Well tonight is Easter Vigil and it is snowing, which delights me. The problem is, the outfits are for warm weather. The dress is sleeveless and the skirt and top combo are definitley not any warmer. Ack! I knew I should have knit myslef a shawl!
