Glove Suggestions Please?

I have gloves -- need new ones, I think.

The ones I'm wearing have most of the padding on the outer heel of my hands, which worked well for me on my flatter bar comfort-beast bike. Now, though, with the new bike, my hands rest differently on the bars, and I think I need something different for the roadie bars.

I'm noticing most of the "impact" more in the thumb-web area of my hand now. Could be I'm doing something wrong, and yeah, I'll be talking to my LBS too (need tire pumping lesson with new valves), but I thought I'd ask:

What sort of glove works well for on the road bike?

I have carpal tunnel in both hands. I wear a wrist splint on my right hand at night. Thus I have a problem with numb hands when I ride, no matter the position of my hands.

My old gloves with gel inserts from last summer wore outm , and those gloves had been very good for minimizing my numbness problem. Last month I did an urban event ride that was quite bumpy, and I went over numerous railroad tracks and patched pavement and I wasn't wearing gel gloves. That night I woke up in the wee hours of the morning with excruciating pain in my right arm and I had to get into the doctor for a prescription. The prescription cleared up the pain within 24 hours. I immediately clicked into TE and purchased the new gel gloves and the new gloves have actually alleviated some of the numbness I get when I ride. I've had much longer and bumpier rides with the new gloves, and no wee hours screaming arm pain.

I just picked me up a pair of the Pear Izumi Gel Vent Pro Glove...the same as Darcy's, at my LBS. I had to size up to a medium for them to be comfortable. I usually wear a small. They are a little different because they don't have the velcro closing at the back, but so far, I like them. I too, get numb hands when riding and these gloves do help.

May not be the same reason as you gals, but I thought I'd mention that I used to get numb hands when riding too, but it was because my stem was too long, making my weight fall forward onto my hands too much. Once I got a shorter stem, I felt my center of gravity shift to my seat/core/stomach area, and the numb hand thing went away immediately. Just something to consider...

I just got some specialized gel gloves, that gals recommended on this forum. I've only tested them on 1 ride but thought the glove really helped reduce the buzz on chip and seal and my hands were very happy.:)

I ditto the recommendation for the PI Gel Vent gloves and further agree that they run a little small.

I like these gloves. I got them for my first century last year and wore them on my 200km Brevet this year. They are my first choice for longer rides.

Hey Kano - I know what you mean about that issue of impact in the thumb web area. Sometimes I need to relax my hold on the hoods and sometimes its just a very long ride and I don't have enough meat on my hands to bear all that pounding. I also picked up a pair of 2007 specialized bg gel glove because they are one of the few gloves that have padding that wraps around the base of the thumb and around the base of the pointer finger. So far that and remembering not to grip my hoods too much has resolved my issue. Happy hands for me!

actually, I asked the SAME question just a month or so ago and got GREAT advice -- ordered a glove recommended on forum and VERY glad I did! so, you may just want to read past suggestions to help you decide what you like and are looking for ... good luck! :cool:
