So today I rode my bike home from work today. Between 35-40 miles total from Yokosuka. Yippee! I can’t believe I actually did it. It took me about 2.5 hours which wasn’t too bad I guess??

The ride was amazing, and definitely tested my abilities (which are pretty lacking so that wasn’t new). There are 4 hills on the ride, and the middle 2 I had to take a quick breather. They were just about the half way point so I knew to take it easy since I had half of the ride to go. Around this time a bug decided he wanted to commit suicide via my stomach and tried to make his way down. Luckily he got caught in my esophagus and I hacked him out, all over my knickers (yum). I think that’s one of the grossest feelings, knowing that something live is trying to make its way into your body.

The last hill which is in Fujisawa, about 45 min from home was hard, especially since it was close to the end of my ride. It didn’t help that some kid on a one speed (with a basket no less, dressed in jeans and a sport coat) decided to drop me on the hill. How embarrassing!!! With that blow to my ego I realized I had biked farther than I ever had before, and that he probably didn’t just spend 2 hours getting to the point we were at. So take THAT!

I think the best part was coming over a small hill and seeing the ocean. It was a gorgeous day, blue skys, and the sun was shining.
Post ride, post shower, I’m feeling fairly well. My shoulders/upper back hurts because of the backpack I was carrying. Not that it was heavy, but I definitely wasn’t used to riding with something like that. My legs feel good, very refreshed since I end up sitting all day at work.

I’m going to try to ride down tomorrow, then take Wednesday off so I can do my tutoring English when I get home. I’ll have to see how I feel in the morning, I might feel completely different!

Congrats on the distance. Mimi's right. We want pics so we can see how lovely Japan is this time of year!

Bugs = protein?

But a 35-mile commute? Wow. You're dedicated. I nominate you as TE commuter of the week.

I think i have an idea of where you were mtnchick..

Think buildings, buildings & more buildings. Yokosuka to Fujisawa is a nice ride.

Do you go anywhere near Chigasaki or Tsujido?

Hopefully I'll be doing this both Thursday and Friday of this week (commuting home) so I'll try and get some pics. Its mostly residential from Yoko to the ocean, then LOTS of cars following the ocean road. I've driven it before on the way home and its taken me around 3 hours (rather than 1.5 on the highway), so it was nice to pass everyone!

I don't really go near Chigasaki or Tsujido, the cities are: Yokosuka, Hayama, a little bit of Zushi along the coast, then right near Enoshima Island, Fujisawa, Yamato, then home to Ayase.

Thanks for all the well wishes, it really did feel great. When I woke up this morning to go it was just too dark, and my lights aren't that good. I'm going to start out at 2-3 days a week just doing one direction until I get back in shape, then hopefully 2-3 days both ways, then every day both ways. Phew...maybe by next fall I can work up to that. The summers here are hot and humid here, so hopefully when the sun comes up a bit earlier I can get out before it gets too hot!

How do y'all deal with really hot weather?
