So there seems to be a new trend in my spinning classes of not using fans - at all! - which to me sounds insane! I can see people not wanting the fan blowing directly on them but two of the fans are up high and just keep the air circulating in the room. It actually get unhealthily (is that a word?) humid and hot from the 25 or so sweaty bodies in there.

So my question is this----------> Is this a new trend? Has it always been like this and I am the last to know? or Are these people crazy?????

We defintely use the fans in our classes. Last night, when it was especially humid in the room, we even propped the door open to get some additional air in from the hallway.

I feel your pain, only in my class the existing fan barely works and AC never works. Good thing the instructor is good otherwise I would stop going there. THere are more than 25 ppl in our class and everyone is elbow to elbow, sometimes it gets so hot that I really don't enjoy the class at all and feel like I didnt exercise well enough.
My guess is that some people think that by sweating buckets they will loose more weight, no one told them that it will only dehydrate them a lot. I would talk to the instructor and tell him/her that your don't feel well without a fan and that it would be appreciated if it would be on.

Same issues at my athletic club....the yoga/spin teacher closes all the windows and fans--g-d forbid those of us at a "certain age" have a hot flash! But the road biker/spin teacher insists on the windows/fans on. She says that if it's too warm our bodies are working hard to keep cool and that's not helping in getting the benefits of the class. I usually plunk myself down on a bike near a window and open it....and if you don't like it then don't spin next to me! I do know that I can put more into the class when I'm cooler.

That was my thought too.

I too try to get there early and grab a bike by a fan. I have the same theory as you Asphalt, if you don't like the fan move to the other side of the room.!! This one guy who made a deal with the gym, he fixes the bikes and gets free membership, thinks he owns the place.

It is SOOO important to have fans in the spin studio. Unlike pedalling outdoors, we don't have the air circulation cooling effect on the skin. Fans are a NECESSITY to keep the air moving otherwise it gets too hot.

I think an instructor is being irresponsible by not having the fans.

Those people are NUTS! Without a fan in our room it's miserable.

Otherwise, my spin class is nuts... or rather the instructor... because she told us she was told by her Boss that we couldn't wear iPods in class... we might GET HURT ON THE SPIN BIKE... if we can't HEAR HER.

Give me a break. I can run on a treadmill, use a stationary bike, etc. and not get hurt... but somehow I'll get hurt in spin class.

To top it off, I think listening to her is more likely to hurt me, as all we ever do is mash on the pedals with low cadence. Mashing = knee pain for me!

Hi KSH,

Sounds like you don't enjoy your class at all... There are some instructors that just make me hate spinning sometimes and say things that sound so wrong. I am not sure how you can hurt yourself on a stationary bike with Ipod since sometimes they blast that music that you can barely hear them screaming. That's why I like taking classes with instructors that actually ride outside, there is such a big difference. But my suggestion is if you really don't like her class, try to spin on your own, its not so bad. Sometimes if instructor cancels, I just get on the bike an do my own workout and end up pushing myself just as much or more.

Seriously. Doesn't she play her own music?

I prefer to have the largest fan blowing directly at my back. And I still sweat buckets.
