For Margo:

This is a bread machine recipe that I have altered.

1 cup water 100 degrees
2 Tbs butter (margarine if you need parve)
2 eggs at room temp
1 1/4 tsp salt
3 Tbs sugar
2 Tbs honey
2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups bread flour
1 package yeast

1 beaten egg for brushing on the surface of challah prior to baking

Put all of the ingredients into a bread machine in the order listed. Set bread machine for a setting that has 2-3 hours of rise time and 1-2 kneading cycles.

At the end of the rise, remove dough and punch down lightly. Braid into 2 challahs. Cover lightly with plastic wrap that has been sprayed with "pam". Allow 30 minutes to rise. (or more if your kitchen is cold). Brush with beaten egg. Bake for 30-45 minutes at 375.

Whole Foods makes one that is super-yummy, for those of us less skilled in the kitchen!:)

A- ha!
Thanks,Doc.
Glad it's a bread machine one because I do not knead (not for nothing do I subtitle myself wingless wonder)

What is the story with the boiling water? (Or am I misunderstanding?)

I found this BM one on the internet ages ago

Add to the BM in this order:

7/8 cup water
1/2 tbsp salt
1/4 cup honey
2 eggs
1/4 cup butter
4 cups flour (I used 1/2 w/w and 1/2 regular)
2 tsp yeast
I also had a few handfuls of raisins and sultanas

I do the "dough" cycle and then punch and braid and do the last rising then give it an egg wash and a sprinkling off poppy seed and sugar. Baking time is 35 - 45 min at 350 deg F/180 deg C

We use it when DS#2 has forgotten his chore or left it too late for the store and there are no challot left.
You can also use it for a fancy bread if you just leave it to bake in the BM

As was pointed out in a PM to me, 100 degrees is fahrenheit not celsius!
