View Full Version : A new distance record!

I won't make a habit of posting these milestones, but I surprised myself by hitting 40 miles in a ride today!!!! Not bad for a formerly chubby sloth, eh?
I had gear troubles (couldn't shift to small front gear...) so the hills killed me (even though I was trying to not mash), so Silver did an extra five miles, while I was worn out - particularly driving into a terrible wind.
Our ride was primarily north with wind from the east. As we turned around to go South, we found the wind had shifted and it was head on:( . That, combined with the gear problem, really killed me. But I averaged about 14.5 mph on a half hilly/half flat route.
I may make the goal of doing the Hilly Hundred yet:D :D :D
Awesome ride Mr. Silver!
- What the heck- Keep posting milestones- it's great to see what everyone else is up to.
Today DH and I went for our first OUTDOOR ride of the season- first of many I hope- there were lots of stops and starts adjusting this and that- we only went 25km- the funny thing is we live at the top of a very steep hill- about a kilometer- no easy way up or down so it doesn't matter how easy a ride we have we have to grind our way up- I told dh to stay out of my way because I intended to wind all over the road ( it is very steep but dead end so little traffic) as it was those hours on the trainer must have paid off because I was able to get up with a fairly good line. ( yae me- my milestone for the day)

Awesome!!! I'd die if I always had a steep hill to look forward to at the end of a ride!

Hey wait a minute....you were DRIVING???? -It DOESN'T COUNT if you take the car!!!!!

Hey Mr.S, 40 miles!! Awesome...That is exactly my current long distance record for rides too!! :p I hope to break it SOON, when the snows melt.
CONGRATULATIONS, you da man. Keep posting milestones- the forum is here for us all to exchange useful information and encourage and inspire each other, right?
Hey Pika- we live right at the top of Monster Hill as well! It's always the very last thing on every one of our rides, can't avoid it nohow. Grind, grind, grind up that killer hill at the end. I feel your pain, but hey it builds our leg muscles up.

And please, keep posting these milestones! I love reading them. You and mrs. silver remind me of mr. running mommy and I ...:D Except *I* am the one mashing! I try not too. But I have these shorty little stump legs with big old thick muscles. I like to say "I'm more Jan (ulrich) than Lance". Not that I don't TRY to spin, but my legs just aren't spinners!! sigh....
Anyhoo, keep it up. And dang if the wind doesn't always shift on you!
Ciao!

particularly driving into a terrible wind.
Faux Pas!!!!! I should have said the "wind was driving through me as a pedaled persistently, cycling with steady progress toward the goal....I think I can, I THINK I Can, I THINK I CAN...I CAN!!! I CAN!!!!"
But I have these shorty little stump legs with big old thick muscles.
Denise, that's me TOO!!! Sometimes I want to sing "We represent the lollipop guild" and then point out the yellow brick road:D :D

I also live at the top of a big hill, with an added treat of an 800 foot driveway with a 15% grade at one point. After a year and a half here, it hasn't killed me yet, but it isn't always fun to think that it's always there at the end of a ride.

Yippee Mr. Silver.
Way to go Pika and Mr. Pika. I also live at the top of a hill. I feel your pain. DH finally went in today and asked them to put on a new cassette so he can manage the hills a little better. We had a big ride today with LOTS of climbing, so he finally gave in. I'm still running my prarie gears. Eeeeeeekkk.

Hey Wahine...DH just ordered a new super hill climbing rear cassette for my bike yesterday, too! I'll be up to those Monster Hills soon!!! :D

Great pic Silver! You need to reduce the file size. I usually do that in adobe photoshop. You can both change the size by going to image size, and also when you save as jpg tell it low, med, high resolution until it is both small enough AND legible. I usually do a combination of the above two methods.
Mr. Silver, I bet you can't wait to get your new ride!!!!!!!!!!
silver

I know how to reduce the image size and how to crop but I don't see any way to reduce the resolution. I do not have Adobe photoshop. I'm using HP image zone and photobucket.

You guys look great...but I can't see your bikes!!!
Congrats on your new record! I agree...keep posting those milestones. It think it's motivational.
I also live at the top of a good sized hill but at least it's pretty short. I have to go down it and then back up on the other side on rides that I leave from my house. It's tough to climb up that first one when you aren't even warmed up yet. And coming back you know you have to face that climb. But I try to not brake coming down the hill...but there's a pretty good turn at the bottom of the hill before climbing back up to my house. If I can maintain my speed it makes the climbing a lot easier. If the road was in better shape it wouldn't be so sketchy. Makes the end of the ride interesting.

Ahhh BAMA fans!! Almost moved there, friends nephew goes there, love the tide. I wear my Bama shirt with pride! :D
And I had to laugh when Lisa SH posted that picture... I am the one on the left! I swear!! The bugger thing about it is since I'm short, my legs just look fat most of the time. But when You get up close you realize, no those really ARE all (well mostly) muscle! My running coach teases me about my calves! He says thats how he recognizes me in a race! OY!!
And the body builders at the gym drool over them. I'm not so impressed!! I do NOTHING to encourage them! sigh....

Here's the deal...hopefully, we'll be at the beach next week. What that means is Silver is going whether I can or not...so hopefully WE'LL be at the beach, since I've got a pending legal issue in Indy where I may have to testify (ironically, probably just down the hall from IndySteel). SO....
If I can get that behind me and can still catch a flight to meet up with the family, you'll have a picture of us riding at the beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama :p :p a/k/a "The Redneck Riviera":p :p

Hmmmm......looks like that means that silver is driving to the beach (11 to 12 hours) with the 2 kids plus friend, plus luggage, plus my bike and possibly his new bike. And you're going to be flying in? *sigh* I'd better get some free time for some serious miles! at this point in the long midwest winter, I'll take that for some sunshine! ;)

At dinner tonight I was lamenting to mr. running mommy about how we needed to get a beach house in gulf shores and have our friends meet us there.
We have friends that used to live in Hoover, but now live in Villa Rica GA. And some friends in Texas that we want to get together. I'm thinking that a good ol trip to the redneck riviera is in order!!
The Florabama is up and running again right?? :D

I'm not sure.....I'm pretty sure that it is.....sounds like we need to check it out :p The area is still really depressed from Ivan. It's probably a good time to be buying right now. Many of the local restaurants did not reopen after Ivan. They said that the only restaurant that was profitable last year was Lulu's. But the Florabama.....that's like.....seaweed...you know it keeps coming back.
I am so looking forward to riding Fort Morgan road. I figure two laps would be a century. I think I can do it if the wind is not too bad.

My hubby is in Perdido Key right now. He took his bike (that's a big step for him!). Here's a picture he sent from his ride yesterday. I don't know which sign they put up first.*

seems a bit redundant if they put the diving and jumping one first. :p

Hi Northstar! welcome! I just wanted to explain.....I'm silver. I'm a gal. i had a wreck last october and my husband, Mr. silver came to the board to update the ladies on my condition. he was wlecomed and invited to stick around, which he did with gusto. ;) He was so inspired by the ladies that he began an all out diet and fitness program losing 25+ pounds and exercising, now buying a bike. he's already as fast as me on the bike if not faster.
so that's the story as I know it. now you know the rest of the story!

Yes, most excellent recap silver!! We love your mr. silver around these parts!!
As for the redneck riviera...
Sad to hear that the area is still in bad shape from Ivan. We had a great time down there in 03. I wanted to buy a house down there then.... hmmmm.. Now ya got me thinking?! ha ha ha
But yeah, I figured the florabama would be back. I've never actually BEEN there.. Kinda skeered of it actually.:D But I remember thinking about how it was prolly getting blown to bits by Ivan and being sad. Actually being sad for the whole area because we really liked it down there. It was just a laid back fun place to be. And I LOVED swimming in the gulf!!!
Next trip I'm defintely taking my bike!
Have fun down there!
Oh and ROLL TIDE ROLL!!! :D :D :D
Ciao!
