Today, I had sandwiches brought in for a meeting from Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches.

OMG!!!! My sandwich was 880 calories from their website!!!!

First, I can't believe that I didn't know better...but Gee, even their low fat/low carb options are off the chart on calories.

I'm shocked (and ashamed)...there's a big lesson in here for me.

I can't tell you how many "HOLY CRAP! That has HOW MANY Calories in it?!" moments I have had after looking at the nutritional info AFTER the fact. Sigh... Sometimes even the healthiest looking things are chock full of calories.
My weight watcher friend turned me on to "dotties website" I think its www. dwlz.com.
She has it inbedded with alot of stuff, but if you scroll down you can find the restaurants button. Even though some things only have the WW "points" values, you can get an idea of the good and bad at places. Basically you want to never go over 10 points, but stay around 6-8 at a restaurant.
I have a personal list of "will never eat there again" restaurants because it seems that there is just nothing even remotely good for you on the menu. Even their supposed "healthy" items.
Here is MY list of banned places:
Chilis
Islands
PF Changs
TGIFridays
Macaroni Grill
Cheesecake factory

Places I WILL go to:
Wildflower bakery and cafe
Paradise bakery cafe
pei wei (you have options to make things lower cal and they have good nutritional info online)
Sweet tomatoes (salad place)
chipotle (because again i can control what goes into my bowl)

Well anyway, don't beat yourself up over the sammich debacle. It happens to the best of us. Just move forward with resolve.
Best of luck!
Denise

Thanks Running Mom:

Of your "A" list, I've done many lunches at Chipotle for the same reason. Choice is the key.

Also try out www.calorielab.com.

What, do you think I have WILL POWER????:o :o :p

The biggest challenges sometimes have the easiest solutions, don't they?

Yeah, it does take willpower. My biggest challenges are pizza and tortilla chips. No not together. :p

I will eat a whole big bag of tortilla chips if I eat them from a bag rather than putting them in a bowl.

Mr. Silver,
Next time is there someone you could split the lunch with? That way you do not need will power. Just a thought. You are doing splendidly, do not let one sandwich throw you off, think of it as a learning experience and move on. :)

Well, that wouldn't start any office rumors if I was sharing lunch with co-workers, would it???:D :D

Just teasing, but it really would cause quite a stir, I'm sure. It's funny, in the business world, it is more acceptable to waste than it is to pursue a practical idea like that...hmmmm.

But Silver and I do it all the time...

Yet another reason I am glad to not work in an office. :p

My biggest challenge is open bowls of snack foods at either a staff meeting or in the bar. Both are after school when I'm really hungry and tired and my resistance is down. And both are free. And both are right there in reach. I cannot resist. I have even tried bringing my own bag of carrots and I still want handfuls of the other stuff. Going for drinks with friends after school is the worst because the alcohol also lowers my resistance.

I just try not to do it very often. :D

Same thing happened today in Indy...and that's what I did...I ate half!!!!

But, I went farther as well. Here's the scenario:

Five people in a huge conference room at our attorney's office. Two very smart and well paid attorney's, my boss the CEO, and another associate of mine.

As they serve the Jimmy John's sandwiches, I state "Do you know that each one of those has nearly 1,000 calories! I'm just going to eat half of mine."

EVERYONE in the room left half their sandwich!

Ha! If misery loves company, then healthy does too!

I wanted to see what a 1000 calorie sandwich looked like! When I looked at the site I understood - the sandwiches are just huge and well stuffed :D Its so easy just to trough the lot. The only place round here that I can get a butty even resembling like that would be Subway and I have to make a special trip to get to it. I tend to avoid them as I know the ones I like are pretty calorific. Having said that I don't think my home made ham, goats cheese and chutney sandwich is massively saintly (I'm going for a run at lunchtime to earn it).

I'd be tempted to eat half and take half home for dinner!

Just looked too. A really yummy Turkey Tom on whole wheat with dijon mustard, lettuce, tomatoes and sprouts has 477 calories, 6.5 grams of fiber, 28 grams of protein and 6 grams of fat. Overall, not a bad option at all. In fact, sounds kinda good to me! (On a riding day, that is!)

Congratulations on becoming more aware of the food you nourish your body with. But don't be ashamed. Never EVER be ashamed of the decisions you make. This type of feeling is why women are so self critical of their choices and their bodies. There is a wonderful book called "when you eat the refrigerator, pull up a chair" wonderful lessons in there.

One of the "rules" of dieting is to not beat yourself up over these sorts of things. Rather, be aware of where you went wrong, and then pick it up again at the next meal.
