The police served the search warrant yesterday on the apartment where they thought the burglars lived. They found my driver's license and some other stuff that is probably ours. I get to go identify it this afternoon.

It's been hard. I've known for like a month where they live - within spitting distance of my house.

Well. That's what I get for staying away from T.E. for a month -- I miss out on all the excitement!

So you knew where they lived? Is that kind of like being Nancy Drew, warting the police to do something? (Glad you didn't end up hog-tied in the trunk of a yellow roadster, though.)

Congrats!

Oh V. This is good news! Were the burglars arrested?

I get to go identify it this afternoon. Are you going to go to the apartment? My neighbor was robbed a few years ago. She had to go to the bad guys' apartment to identify her stuff. She said it was really creepy! One of her picture frames was on a table with somebody else's picture in it. She saw her stuff all over the place in little bits and pieces--microwave, TV, etc. But the worst was that her comforter was on the bed! Yuck!

I'm hoping they were arrested. :)

I'm going to the police station. It's weird that they kept my DL.

These people were icky! Their apartment was being subsidized by an adoption agency in southern CA. The agency pays your rent until you have a kid. You then give it up for adoption. They had a baby last month, born addicted to meth and gave it up for adoption.

All of our stuff reeks of smoke.

I am SO happy to hear this news! Good for the police for moving on it... hopefully they'll actually serve some time. It sickens me about the adoption thing. I have pretty strong opinions about drug use, criminals and sex offenders as far as what should be done... (I'll leave it at that, or I could easily start a board war here. :o )

So will you keep your stuff now, or get rid of it? I wonder if I'd be torn or if I'd just KNOW what I wanted to do with it... hard to say without having been there...

very happy for you guys that they caught these losers. Good, good news :)

Does that mean you get to sue for the cost of your ruined vacation?

Veronica
02-23-2007, 02:09 PM
They have nothing, who would I sue? But Brandi's pictures of Hawaii are just killing me. :D

Thom talked to the insurance adjuster. We can either give them the recovered items as salvage or give back the money they gave us for the item. I expect we'll work it out on a case by case basis.

The good thing is most of our personal paperwork was still in their apartment. So in a few years we can stop worrying about someone trying to get credit as us.

The thing about the adoption agency is just depressing. I've never wanted kids, so I can only imagine how awful it must be to want them and to be unable to conceive. So you pay oodles of money to an agency, who is supposed to make sure you get a healthy baby. But the agency clearly didn't do much of a background check on these two or any sort of follow up. The chick was wanted for something else, so didn't even have the option for bail. The agency had been paying their rent for 18 months!

It's just gross all around. I sincerely hope that whoever has the baby now, loves it and gives it a good chance at life. It's going to be a rough road for that kid. I can only imagine what being born already addicted to something must to do to a little one's health and growth. It makes me sick, that total lack of concern for a life you created. I'd like to see them get some nasty punishment for that too!

Any chance you got your laptop back?

Veronica
02-23-2007, 02:41 PM
No, I was hoping.... the detective looked for it specifically too.

But, we decided to go back to being a one computer household. It has cut down on the amount of idle surfing we each do. :p

I was going to post the same thing about the adoption agency/baby thing. Ugh, it is absolutely disgusting that they were being paid to have a kid. I work with a woman who is going through the stress of adopting and she said she worries most that the birth mother is going to have given a darn her whole pregnancy. :(

I am glad you got your stuff back, at least there is some closure.

I'm late to the party - but oh YAY!!

I'm so glad you got some closure. What a horrific pair those burglars are. I can't even imagine what they're getting away with. That adoption agency should be shut down.

That adoption agency should be shut down.

I realize it's a slippery slope and maybe society does not want to go there but the meth addicted surrogate mother, isn't that child endangerment??

It's a slippery slope once you go there of "you smoked, you didn't take vitamins, you watched too much reality TV while pregnant..." but meth while being in a sense paid to carry a child to term?? that has to be illegal. Doesn't the agency do prenatal check ups? How does a Dr. not catch that?

I am sorry for all you are going through! I did not mean to rub my vacation in anyone's face. It was just our first real vacation in the 20 years my dh and i have been together and I wanted to share. ((((((hug)))))) for hurting your feelings really.

My friends rental is super nice so if you need a place let me know and I will get you the info. So you have been to the big Island?

We've been to the Big Island 3 times and once to Kauai.

Veronica
02-26-2007, 05:37 PM
The Big Island is incrediblely diverse. I loved Kauai, but if I had to pick only one to ever go to, it would be the Big Island.

Maybe we'll go back again next Christmas. This last trip was great - very relaxing. But since we had to come home early, we didn't get up the national park, other than when I cycled through it. We've never been able to spend as much time at the park as we have wanted to. Our first time we were touring on our tandem. The second time we were traveling with family. We were going to have four days there this last trip.

Okay, I don't know why I'm just now seeing this thread, but I wanted to say that I'm happy that justice is served, somewhat, at least, V. I'm sorry about the adoption thing. That's really horrible.

I wander if having your drivers license they were able to access or do something with it in terms of your credit? Hope not, and don't mean to put worry in your head, but ask questions to protect yourself. Happy for you to get your things back though.
I have been away for a while did not know till I was reading through the forum.

Veronica

They did try. We locked our credit right away. They have tried for at least three different cards.

though like everyone else, i'm appalled with the adoption thing.

i just hope things keep getting better now that you can get your life and credit back to normal.

Veronica
03-01-2007, 10:21 AM
Our credit is fine. We took care of that right away. It's kind of amusing to see where they are trying to get credit though.

The guy is still staying in the apartments next to us though. He was getting evicted yesterday, but his car was there this morning. I know innocent until proven guilty and all that... but in my mind, my stuff in his apartment says it all.

So he must have a "friend" living in another apartment over there. Friend to me means probably an accomplice. Even if they didn't have a hand in, they most likely know about it. Knowing and doing nothing about it, makes you just as guilty in my mind.

So glad to hear that the police finally took action. It's good that you were able to get some of your stuff back. It must be awful for you to know who took your stuff and seeing them freely roaming around your neighborhood. My vote is for you to schedule that Hawaii trip for next Christmas  .
