I guess I can't answer this for sure but... Canadians only need a passport to enter the US via airplane, but not at the border in a car. I would be REALLY surprised if Americans need one to get home if they are only crossing the border.

I've posted the link below for this specific question on an FAQ to the Official US website.

http://help.customs.gov/cgi-bin/customs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=74&p_created=1043364936&p_sid=2JZU1Iti&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9NDYzJnBfcHJvZHM9JnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWRvY3VtZW50cyByZXF1aXJlZCBmb3IgZW50cnk*&p_li=&p_topview=1

The summary is that you need proof of citizenship to reenter the US. That can be either a passport or birth certificate, (I think there are some other acceptable docs listed as well) if you are travelling by car. It must be a passport if you are travelling by plane.

You won't have trouble crossing into Canada. It'll be coming back that might be an issue. The website listed above is a great resource for these kinds of questions related to travel.

I do not have a passport yet, and cannot spend the money on one right now. I will print this in case any agents catch amnesia when I try to cross. Any one out there running in this or the Tri?

Here are the new travel requirements:

Looks like so long as you go by car you're fine, but after Jan. 1, 2008, even land travel between US and Canada will require a passport to return to the US.

I'm doing the Divas on the Run 8k on March 18th. It's a great little race. I'll gladly see you here! (I wish I could host you but I live in a student residence with no space...)

I'm not aware of a triathlon on that same day though. Do you have more info on that??

Well there is the UBC Triathlon the week before. It's a huge indoor (for the swimming part) event. http://www.rec.ubc.ca/ and then you click on the Triathlon logo on the right of the screen.

I would be wary of an open water swim in March in Vancouver. Brrr!!!

The Divas' tri is July 29th. http://www.reflexionclinics.com/races/DivaTri2007.html
I hadn't thought of doing that one, but I might. Looks fun. :)

There is a 90% chance I will run. I doubt I will tri. My swim time is not that good. I may practice this summer, but not sure.

Humm that's not an easy one. Vancouver is a very busy city, tourism-wise.

Try the Holiday Inn on Broadway at Willow (or Heather, can't remember).

There are no hotels within the immediate vicinity of the race start but any downtown hotel near Granville street will be not bad because you can take the #4 trolley bus to get to the race start. There is also the YWCA. Check out the Best Western Chateau Granville too.

Good luck!
