View Full Version : Yet another reason to stick with TE

I know we have had an interesting time discussing whether or not men should be allowed in this forum.

Back at the other bike forum, I sent a 'report this post' complaint about a 'joke' which I felt to be sexist--in other words, it violated the forum guidelines.

Not only is the 'joke' still there, I have been attacked by a fellow member as:

"What r u the ****ing forum rules nannie & police?"

Wow. Wow. I reported this post too. I'll see what is done with it, but I doubt anything will happen.

It's nice to come back to TE

This is a link to the 'joke':

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=263368

And men wonder why we don't want them around here.

I'm guessing that due to a tightening up on the P & R forum, certain members just can't restrain themselves.

I'm trying to stick to just my favourites, like C & V, but--Wow.

I have never found another forum as inviting, welcoming, helpful and caring as TE.

Sorry you had to go thru that, EH.

I lurk on a horse racing forum and this week the moderators had to do a 2-day shutdown as a "cooling off" period because the fighting got so bad. It got pretty vicious... physical threats, foul language, all around abusiveness... and some of the women were as bad as the men! :(

Yeah, TE is definitely the best.

I saw that joke somewhere else and I thought it was kind of funny. But I think it came from my sister in law - a self described BMW - Big Maine Woman. Presentation is key. Our instruction in sexual harassment says that if someone tells you they are offended, you need to stop.

Good manners say that the joke should be pulled. I guess the guy who replied to you needs some vocabulary lessons as well. :)

they do the red light, yellow light, green light stuff here (well.. the last time i had a sexual harrasment class it was that way) but ya.... they have NO CLUE over there!

it's all in the context of where it's at... and in a co-ed cycing forum that is as volatile at that one is... it has no place IMO.....

I may not read the right threads, but it seems like CyclingForums (the other board I read and post to) is more civil than BikeForums? Not to say that there are not some real jerks and trolls over there, but it doesn't seem as if it's as constant. They have banned some folks for threats and personal attacks or inappropriate postings.

Just keeping up with THIS forum is getting to be a full-time job :D .
How do those of you who read and post on BJ and TE have time to do anything else (like ride your bikes) ;)  ?? I try to be selective, but even still...

My old motorcycling forum is so utterly vulgar and cruel that I would go to bed either sad or angry after almost every evening of posting. I kept thinking that since I was one of the people who helped build the forum I wasn't going to be chased off by a bunch of sophomoric classless idiots...well the idiots won and I'm gone from there.

Mine is kind of slack right now. I work at a community college and we're between semesters. I *should* be doing things I normally don't have time to do, but here I am...

I spend about 1/5 my "forum time" over on BikeJournal. Mostly lurking. (I'm a big fan of Pansy Palmetto)

The moderators there are pretty quick to act, but they're also pretty quick here on TE.

I left the bicycling mag forum cuz there were just some really obnoxious folks there. They actually deleted me against my wishes from their 'club' on bike journal, cuz I wouldn't give them my mileage, and one fellow in particular, who often posted about how good his wife was in bed was obnoxious to me, so I came here. A lot of that 'bikeporn' crap was posted there too. It doesn't bug me that it exists, but I have no interest in viewing it. I log my miles on BJ, but don't hang out too much since their policies are too politically correct for my liking. There was a recent discussion if a link to the Onion should be deleted as offensive. PLLLLLEASE, we are all adults with a range of political views. TE strikes a happy medium, we all agree for the most part as to what is offensive and inappropriate.

A lot of that 'bikeporn' crap was posted there too. It doesn't bug me that it exists, but I have no interest in viewing it.

Confession time: My sentiments precisely. Early in life, I developed an obsession with porn. I was exposed at a young age to the Playboy's that a friend's dad had. I struggled with this well into adulthood.

But, I see it as a non-productive obsession. This is one thing that draws me to this forum...it is safe and does not even remotely trigger flashbacks to past addictions...and it is an addiction the same as alcoholism.

Scripture says: "All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body."

I personally don't want to be exposed to this either.

For the record, I checked out some of the other forums...and they're not the same. I hope that you are knowing that I'm not trying to change the chemistry, but I enjoy my occassional visits...:) :)

$bbuserinfo[username], you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Hi Everyone- Since I see a recurring problem w/ other boards having yucky, objectionable junk on them, I thought I'd share this. I'm not trying to advertise, but wanted you to be aware that it is a decent board. I( myself) is the community leader there and We don't allow "junk" on it and "junk" is reported. The board is slower than this one ,but nice. You're welcome to visit or join.
"TE is the only other cycling forum I go to daily. I come here for info, hang out, and cyber fun w/ this great group of ladies(and gent) and I'm community leader of Cycling & Triathlons over at ivillage.com. Since I head up that board, I keep it clean and fun like I receive here. So anyone is welcome to visit. Ivillage has strict rules too and I like them, they help keep spammers and inapproprite conversations off the boards." Jennifer

lowcel, you should read the rest of the thread very carefully.

I made a valid complaint about the tenor of some of the 'jokes'. I was lambasted by a member. It's not funny. It's harrasment. It's not just me that doesn't like it.

You have lost members by disparaging our point of view, and I know moderating is a thankless job.

It still doesn't excuse the rudeness of some of the members. You should take a look at some of the SoCal forum's posts from the past day. It's not funny, and it disparages members from both TE and BF.

I like both TE and BF--at least the forums I visit. But I don't want to have to look at infantile crap everytime I look at something besides C & V.

We're asking for understanding. We can't vent over there--we have been harassed for doing so.

yeah, that joke would be ok told to me by a friend in private, but posted on a public forum it is pretty bad manners. And to attack you is worse manners.

I agree. That joke wasn't the worst I've ever heard or seen, but it falls into a generally nasty category of sexist jokes where the point is that women have some sort of moral duty to put on fat where men like to see it and avoid it where men don't like to see it, any woman who fails to distribute her fat in this unnatural fashion deserves to be humiliated, and any woman who doesn't think this is funny has no sense of humor. Yukk! And that last step is waaaay out of line!

Huh?! Hmmmm.. anyone mention Lance?

No. Lance was a drift. The point was nudity vs. porn, where not all nudity is at the expense of dignity. Some nudity-on-a-bike is clearly not porn -- not because it is male nudity, but because the picture obviously is not about a body's sexual availability to the viewer. The Lance picture is about the body one builds as a biker and the relationship between biker and bike.

The "naked-woman-posing-in-the-vicinity-of-a-bike" pictures that women tend to find offensive are (just like naked-woman-on-the-hood-of-a-car or naked-woman-[fill in random excuse for pose here]) merely about making some excuse for getting porn pictures into yet another social context where men can be enticed into buying a product by being made to feel that, as viewers, they are the ones at the receiving end of some "come-and-take-me" expression on a sexually exaggeratedly attractive body.

Sorry the post was so cryptic. I thought about it after, that my point was far from clear. But it was late and I needed to sleep rather than edit.

OK gals. Back to other drifts. We seem to be done with the original topic here. ;) :p I'm off for another cuppa at the campus cafe. With a cookie this time. Yesterday I got cramps in both calves at spin class. I clearly had not had enough cookies at work before hitting the gym.

OK gals. Back to other drifts. We seem to be done with the original topic here. ;) :p Errr....durn it. I think that was my fault...was it? Hmmm....yea, I think it was. Sorry, I DO apologize. I think I'll have a cookie to help me feel better. :p

If anyone would like to continue talking about pictures of naked women on bikes and the men that post them just to piss us off, please do -- and perhaps I'll join in and actually behave myself. I personally would rather talk about cookies (or naked MEN on bikes....:p ). Call me weird.

I don't think we would want to ban poor bikeMomma over that biccie photo--we have only ourselves to blame for lusting after that poor cookie (or biscuit--variant British terminology).

You are all making me hungry, and this after having a lovely scone, made by Mr. East Hill, fresh out of the oven...etc.

So, join the Climbing Club !

One thousand feet of climbing = one cookie.
Unless it's real steep, then you get two.

How's that? :)

No. Lance was a drift. The point was nudity vs. porn, where not all nudity is at the expense of dignity. Some nudity-on-a-bike is clearly not porn -- not because it is male nudity, but because the picture obviously is not about a body's sexual availability to the viewer. The Lance picture is about the body one builds as a biker and the relationship between biker and bike. .....

Exactly my point. For example, I have this poster in my office http://www.cyclesgladiator.com/ (a new office gift from my daughter)
and while it depicts a nude women and a bike it is clearly ART. That is different from the crap that is posted at some of the coed sites. And again, I respect free expression, I don't care that some men view that sort of thing, I just choose not to. But, I did have an EEOC officer notice the poster on my wall, and ask me if anyone had told me they were offended by it, and if so I would have to take it down. I asked her how could anyone be offended by art, and these are medical students so they really shouldn't be offended by a tasteful image of the human body.

This is why we have boring plain governmental calendars at work! No one gets offended, except for those who just don't like work!

Oh, and we do allow puppies and kitten calenders. Flowers, too. I've got one of my orchid calenders up.

Speaking of which, I guess I shouldn't have the orchid calender up, 'cuz I know someone here knows the origin of the word 'orchid'...:)

Paphiopedilums!

Actually, the genus Orchis is quite appropriately named, as one tuber is always larger than the other. The one tuber is the current, growing tuber, the other is the one dying and losing nourishment...

I appreciate the offer but I am actually having a hard time turning them down this year from my friends that are selling them for their kids. Unfortunately I am in the process of getting back down to race weight so I have to pass. It isn't easy though. :(

i'm a gov't worker too, but i have a far side calendar, everyone else has one that is from our contest that we do with the kids across the state.
good thing everyone has a good sense of humor around here.
i had an aunty-stress (http://www.calendars.com/xq/asp/PID.1/MGID.4331/IID.27027/qx/product.htm) one last year that was a big hit.

The boring calenders are government. The puppy/kitten calenders are free from one of the local pet shops! So they actually have birds and (one) snake as well for the various months.

I have two calendars up in my cubicle, side-by-side, that I got for Christmas. One, from DH, is "tropical island scenes" - gorgeous photography, very tasteful. The other "Emily the Strange" is all black and red, very goth and dark. I just like to keep my co-workers guessing... So far no one has complained!

I don't know, Eden, virtually the first thread I read was this one:

http://www.cyclingforums.com/t350478.html

I read a couple more things, and I don't know that I like the way sexist things are left for viewing, instead of getting removed. I saw a lot of posts that made me feel 'icky'--quite a few of them from the OP of the thread I've listed.

Apparently it's much more difficult to be sensitive than I had imagined. I am still appalled at the answer I got from one moderator:

"As for would it bother me if my wife looked at that thread, why would it? She is free to look at whatever she wants. Would it upset her, I doubt it but it is possible I guess."

This goes back to what Veronica said:

"Our instruction in sexual harassment says that if someone tells you they are offended, you need to stop."

I did complain, and I was offended. It's a co-ed site, not a private member's club.

Even where I work, we've had problems with harassment. I remember one poor Vietnamese woman who was harassed mercilessly by one of the custodial staff. He had a long history of harassing Asian women. This poor woman was even afraid to go to the bathroom because he would follow her into the bathroom! He would pretend that he was going to clean, you see.

I finally complained enough to one of the managers that this man was finally officially given a discussion. In over twenty years, no one had gotten this man pinned down on paper. As far as my workplace was concerned, this was the very first time he'd ever been given a talk about sexual harassment. He's managed to control himself much better :) .

But I get the feeling that many of the other cycling/bike forums apparently would just rather have women go away. It's just that vibe, you know? I mean, if I'm concerned enough to report a post, why would my concern be ignored? I realise that there's a difference between TE and BF and CF--for one thing CF does not appear to have any forum guidelines--at least not where the members can see it for review--but BF and TE certainly do. Why post guidelines if you don't ensure that members abide by the rules?

So, I'm still looking for other friendly sites, but it still looks as if TE is the happiest place for women.

Gosh - when I read it I thought that sure, the first person was obviously and obnoxious teenage boy, but if you read further a bunch of men got on and basically told him to shut up and stop whining (and some women too), no one else on the board fed into it and the little troll got shut down. I guess I've never felt that the community as a whole over there was unsupportive to women. Even if a woman gets on and says I'm just starting out I'm overweight and I going to be able to do this -- the guys and gals can be pretty supportive.

Perhaps I will have to wander around some more over there then, but the impression I got from reading the thread was that all the responders to the OP were female, right up until the last person, who is obviously a male administrator. And he was right, that was a troll. But I read some of the OP's other posts, and he was obnoxious in those too.

I think I must just have found a bad one right off. But I think the point I've been making here is that, right or wrong, one's first impression is important.

If a woman comes here, and it's her first venture into the wide world of cycling, it's likely to be a positive encounter. But if she were to read a thread such as the one I posted just a few posts back, or something like this:

http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=263919

She might not be feeling so loved. Most of the comments in the thread refer to a woman's sexuality. The last comment in particular is highly offensive, but no one seems to care.

(The thread above had a photo removed by a moderator. It is the cover of the catalogue in the link and features a young woman in a bathing suit)

I mean, I don't know about the rest of you, but if I were to go to a forum about cats, I would not expect to see photos of naked/semi naked women in order to sell cat litter. I've been assured that marketing in Europe is different, but the people making the comments in the above thread are from the United States. It's been stated here (somewhere :) ) that cycling is a co-ed sport. Sometimes that's hard to believe.

Perhaps I'm just cranky from having to work six days a week...or perhaps I still believe in trying to change the world to a better place, if not for myself, but for the girls who may be just starting out as cyclists.
