how not to do a double metric
You may see this on other forums - i suffer from LTS (lazy typist syndrome):)
I had decided that I was going to trying some brevet Rides in 2007. Brevet rides are unsupported, ultra-distance rides. The nearest place that offered them was San Diego, so I made plans to the 200 Kilometer(124 miles) rides
I woke up early on 20th and drive down to the start at la Jolla. I got there in plenty of time and get the registration taken car of. I usually like to start when it's first light, but under the rules, we had to wait till 7.
the first couple of miles were fine. The only problem was that I had lost my cue sheet. I had a spare one, so it wasn't that big of deal. Unfortunately, I lost it in Escondido. Which was not good, because the course got very tricky here. (2 blocks on one street, turn left , 3 blocks turn right, etc.) Thankfully, I ran into Jim and Mark from the Riverside Bicycle club. they gave one of theirs. Coincidentally, My club(Cycling Connection) and RBC were having a joint ride that day. we joked about we were going to Persona non Grata for doing the brevet instead of the group ride.
We had to do a climb to get into the first control. On brevet , you are given a card which you have stamped at various points called controls. This was by an AM/PM convenience store at interstate 15 and deer creek road , so I stopped and got some thing to eat. I was wishing I could convince Sheetz to build stores on the west coast, but I'm going to have settle for Am/PM and Circle K.
here the ride started to get interesting. the next 30 miles were some very steep and sustained grades. I can do Glendora Mountain Road at 7-8mph (it's about a 6-7% grade). I was doing about 4 and having problems at time with the front wheel coming off the ground ( In my experience, that usually happens around 20%). I was passed by some racers on a training ride, only to encounter them again on a downhill on Couser Canyon. They were waving at me to slow down. A couple of their riders had gone down, but they didn't need anything. they caught me and we rode together until I turned off to do some more climbing.
Eventually I reached the turnaround point at the town of rainbow(Interstate 15 and San Diego/Riverside County line) we crossed over the 15 and began climbing some more. When I was on Reche road, A woman who also doing the brevet got hit by a car. A couple of rides called 991 and the Brevet Administrator. She was conscious and moving, but had to be transported by ambulance. We did some climbing , and came to second control at a sandwich shop in Fallbrook. I stopped and had lunch, and was on my way again.
We were done with the climbing for the most part. However, I made a wrong turn and did not realize it for about 4 miles. I doubled back onto the route, and reached Oceanside about 4 pm. I seriously considered taking the Coaster (Commuter train) back in at this point, but I persevered. It was flat , but I was trying not to push a big gear at this point. I stopped in Enicinitas(about 5pm) to put on my reflective vest and ankle bands as well as to turn on my lights. But I did get to see the sunset over the pacific while riding my bike. Who could ask for anything more?
Those of you have done the Amtrak can figure what happen at 5:30 . Torrey Pines Park! For those of who haven't, it s a mile long climb that ascends about 500 feet. I then pedal through La Jolla and back to the start. About a block away, my cell phone rang. It was Tom, our club president wanting to know where I was at . we were having a part that night. I related my tale and drove back to the party. Would I do it again? Maybe If I do could a flatter series. I was listen to my George Gershwin CD on the way back, and remembering a quote. He was playing tennis with one of his friends and complaining that he could never be another (name composer). He friend said that he stop trying be somebody and concentrate on the best George Gershwin he could be.

Congratulations Fredwina !
Quite the epic journey. I give you a virtual pat on the back. :D

I was toying with the idea of doing my first 200K brevet next weekend, the San Francisco one, but by December I realized I wouldn't be ready.

So instead, it looks like I'm going to be helping out with the sign-out of the fast riders at the finish at the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge. The brevet starts at 7 and, unless assignments change, I'll be signing out the ones who finish between around 1 and 3:30. I hate them already. :D

And a few of us are going to be doing our very first brevet on March 3 in Santa Rosa. It ends at a brew pub, how could I possibly pass that one up? So hopefully Trekhawk, SadieKate & I will have our own first-time stories to share, and maillotpois will chime in with her Voice of Experience - yeh, I know, you only did one before this, but it was a big 'um.

Deanna & Veronica, are you planning to do this one too?

Nice going, Fredwina! Now I know why you wrangled Cupid big time yesterday.

Jobob, I think Cyndi (Emerald if she ever posts again) wants to do the SR200k also. Of course, Bubba is also registered. Always good to have a motivated driver to these events.

Good job Fredwina!!

So does your 300k really go up Palomar? I saw a reference to that in Bike Journal.

Edit: Oh never mind - I just saw your response. Yeah, DEFECT!

Well, that will be lovely. You can barge into the observatory and do some star gazing!! :D

I haven't been up there since law school. I bet it would be a great ride. As would Cuyamaca. All the places I used to go on epic hikes...

her name is Bobbi Fisher, and it looks she was injured pretty seroiusly: :(

Hi all - just want you to know that Bobbi got hit by a car yesterday on a 200 mile ride she was on. She was hit from behind by a distracted driver who was dealing with a dog and he hit Bobbi. I guess Bobbi hit the hood of the car/truck and landed on the ground. She had an MRI last night and they found breaks in her T8 and T11 (near her cervical) and a torn ligament. She can't move too much or it hurts. They are making arrangements to have a back brace made just for her - she will have to wear it for 3 months. Last night when I spoke with her she said she was fine, just a bit upset that her new sunglasses were gone and that they had to cut off her $80 jersey. Anyway, I'm heading up to see her this afternoon and will let you know what else is going on. She is at the Palomar Medical Center, Room 754, 2nd bed. The address is: 555 East Valley Parkway, Escondido CA 92025. Phone number is 760/739-3000.
She spent the night here on Friday and we got a couple of good card games in! I told her I'd bring cards to play today at the hospital is she was up to it and she said she was...so we'll see!
Anyway - just thought you guys might want to know.
Love you!
Kris

This showed up in my e-mail This morning:
Hi there San Diego Riders! I want to thank you all for being so wonderful to ride with....these wacky rides are simply the joy in my life. I swear I have some kind of guardian angel. This is my third incident with a pick-up truck.

The first one was in Swaziland, Africa. A pick-up turned right in front of me on a 35mph downhill. I took out its front quarter panel, its windshield and ended up flying onto the pavement. I ended up with NOTHING...not a scratch on me...just a big bruise on my hip, a taco'd wheel and bent forks. I was back on my bike in 36 hours (took that long to get my bike repaired).

The second incident was a pickup truck on the 101 Fwy north of Ventura on the Grand Tour Triple Century ride. The truck came zooming past me across the white line and smacked me with his mirror...my saving grace on that one was it was a folding mirror and it snapped back (and hopefully broke his window). I don't know how, but I managed to stay on my bike and finish the ride with just a bruise on my arm. (thanx again to that guardian angel!)

Saturday's accident was bizarre. The driver told me that he had just come around a corner, was going 15 mph and his dog jumped in his lap so he couldn't see me. Strange...'cause I was at the top of the straight climb and there were no corners. Also, if he was going only 15 mph, I don't think I would have wiped out his front grill! But the good news is, that although I have 4 fractured vertebrae, they are not serious and surgery is probably not an issue...the worst part are the torn ligaments in my back, which will probably take longer to heal than the vertebrae. I will be in a back brace for about 3 months. They claim I will be off my bike 6 months to a year...well, I know that is hogwash....I heal very quickly and my goal is to be back in training in no longer than 4 months. The doctors cannot believe how little injury I ended up with and they will also not believe how quickly I'm going to recover!

The good news is that if I can't ride the rides, at least I can help staff the rides, and still get my vicarious enjoyment.

So...all of you...please ride as safe as you can and enjoy every minute of your ride....I am sending my guardian angel watches over all of you as well!

Big hug to one and all.... Bobbi Fisher

So I improvised!
I just made a hotel reservation for 2/23 in Morro Bay (the 300k is on 2/24), and iv;e been exchange e mails with Homey all day.
In case you haven't figured it out : I defected to SLO/ Cayucos!
You did get to Palomar in the daylight, but you also 8'000 feet of climbing after 75 miles. not to mention going thourgh downtown SD on Saturday night.
I may just stick with 200K's - I've also been looking the Southern Utah series.
Will let you all if I have better luck this time.

Isn't it the 200K on 2/24?

My husband & I are going to be down in Solvang for the Tour of CA time trial the day before, and I was kind of toying with the notion of signing up for it since we were going to be in the neighborhood.

But then I decided to save myself for the Santa Rosa 200K the following weekend :p

Yes it's on 2/24, but it starts at 6:30AM, and I'm about 250 miles away. So I'm going to drive up and have a nice dinner that night before (it is my birthday, after all:) )

SLO sounds MUCH more civilized! Good for you! If it weren't so much time in the car, I'd have thought about that series. I grew up in Paso and I'm always wanting to get back there fore some riding now that I ride bikes (instead of horses! )

I just need to stay closer to home for my events this year. Too much time away from the family is not good.

Yowza! Well, it's your thread. You can take it as OT as you like. That sounds like a messy situation. Sorry.
