I'm having some trouble taking off some weird black paint on the chain stay. if i can't get it off.. then i guess i've gotta powder coat this puppy.

any ideas for colors or designs if i go this route?? although i'd love to have something totally fancy and lovely.. i'm thinking maybe i ought to stay true to the original frame style...

i'd like something nice but not too fancy. something that accents the lugs and is classic.. maybe? i'm also thinking something that doesn't scream, yell or loudly proclaim "STEAL ME!!" (and maybe that's an argument to not re-paint it..)

but maybe with a touch of.. something unique? i dunno. which is why i'm kinda asking you folks for some thoughts.

anyone know of some trustworthy powder coating companies? i've looked into spectrum, sycip, maas tech which i think all do nice jobs but if anyone has any personal experience, i'd love to hear about it!

That's going to be so beautiful! I have a Bridgestone MB1 as my commute bike. Very cool!

Nifty. I think refurbing a vintage frame would be fun and a Bridgestone would be one of my first choices. Do you want to stay true to the period or go really retro.

Also, you might contact Rivendell, since he is the original Bridgestone designer.

whooo hooo! You lucky gal. That's going to be a beeeyooteeful bike. Love those chrome lugs.

Y'all know I like my LBS .... a lot. Chris does a great deal of powder coating. My steel commuter-mobile is about 10 years old, she's got some scrapes and dings over the years most from contact with bike racks.

I've been thinking of powder coating without the logos.

Lots and lots of colors to pick from, Chris thinks I should go with burgundy frame and black front fork.

He estimated somewhere less than $150. I think that's without logos.

His paint guys could replace your logos too.

But yes, what S'Belle said you may want to give the Riv guys a call since they are right here and it may be one of theirs, they might want a go at it.

Chris'll serve you coffee though so c'mon down :D

I'm looking at a Bridgestone Catalog from '92. The XO 1 came with the The Most Expensive Fork Crown In the World. :D

Limited production of 1,000, mustache handlebars and was purple metallic or pearl tusk that year. It's not in the '94 catalog I have.

"The "XO" series were the most idiosyncratic of Petersen's designs. They were intended as fast, sporty urban street machines, primarily for pavement use, but more rugged than traditional "road" bikes. Most of them featured "moustache " handlebars and slick medium-width tires.
The top-of-the-line XO-1 and other upper-end models used 559 mm (26 inch) tires, and 23.8 mm (15/16") handlebars that used "road" type brake levers and bar-end shifters.

These bikes, especially the XO-1, are highly sought-after "cult" bikes today. The XO-5 was more like a typical "hybrid" with 622 mm (700c) wheels and a variant moustache handlebar with 22.2 mm (7/8") diameter, that used "mountain bike" type controls. This model was rather too compromised. That version of the moustache handlebar had fairly poor ergonomics with the supplied controls."

you lucky dog you, whoa baby, that's a nice project bike.

now that we've seen "before" here's just one example of an "after" shot

I've read the same thing Trek420 said--that the XO-1 is a highly desirable bike among some circles. I've read long posts somewhere about how people wish they could find one, wish they'd start making more, etc. You have really got a treasure on your hands!

My touring bike is a Waterford 1900 is similar in character to the XO-1: lugged steel, 559 tires, barend shifters, and drop bars. It's the most comfortable bike ever, though a bit heavy for fast club riding.

ya.. i'm looking forward to restoring it. yesterday morning i started a BOM, a "bill of materials" for it. i'm going to sign up for a 2 day bike mechanics/maintenance workshop in feb. any one wanna join? it's in sf over 2 sundays.

mimi - it's orange.

veronica - since it's orange, i'm guessing this is the 93. oh sorry.. it's "construction pumpkin."

trek - thanks, as always. will contact chris or take it in for him to take a gander at. and that's not a chrome lugs.. the last owner painted over the orange with some metallic paint that requires more rubbing thant i put in in the first hour or so.

sb - thanks.. i've been wondering about calling riv. i know i've been scouring their catalog for parts! I think i wannna keep it simple and true to the retro.

here's my fave "after" shots:

We have plans for Sun. the 18th and 25th (it's the Tour of California, baby!) but if doesn't fall on those days I'd be interested.

freewheel cycles up in sf. 2/4 and 2/11 from 12 - 4 both days. also includes 6 mos of membership to use their self service shop (which isn't really convenient for me since i'm in the south bay) but it's the knowledge i'm after.

it's the only classes i've found. $100.

and that's bout all i know. i figure it's gonna be better than what i know now... uh nothing...

Maybe you guys will think I'm nuts...but I like your Bridgestone just the way it is right now- with all the different years of its history and life story, paint colors in different areas, with the OLD logos all nicked and scraped, with the odd bits of colors here and there and scratches and nicks. I think it's a work of art! I'd hate to see the old original logos removed and replaced with a perfect paint job and new logos. How about just cleaning and drying it toroughly and then some ClearCote? But hey that's just me.
BEAUTIFUL bike- how lucky you are.
Keep in mind that is a bike that certain people who "know" would want to steal very badly. Lock it up good, girl.

I would worry about the integrity of the paint that's on it, with its somewhat mysterious past. You don't want moisture to have crept in at a scratch or ding and be slithering it's way along the metal/paint interface rusting and wreaking havoc.

What kind of condition is the original paint? Can it be salvaged? Man, I just can't imagine someone painting over that baby, did they know what they had?

Trek420

Man, I just can't imagine someone painting over that baby, did they know what they had?

My guess is they:

* wanted to "uglify" and theft proof the bike or ...
* had scratches and didn't know how to touch it up or ...
* think it looks way cool (the hand paint job, this is my bet)
* thought/knew it was hot and did not want it recognised.

When I see bikes with the logo painted over, or neatly wrapped over with electrical tape ... I wonder.

But if they knew what they had, they'd have fixed it up so my guess is did not know better.

R'dog, what's this babies history? It's in good hands now.

It's steel, she needs a good paint job is my vote.

Uh oh. I need to check on Big Red. She's steel, and she's got a few rust spots on her handlebars. Does that mean she needs a new paint job? I wonder if anybody here does that, or do I need to take her to CA this summer and make her my CA bike?

Trek420
01-21-2007, 03:29 PM
You're not leaving her outside are you?

Handlebars most likely are not steel, and they are easier to replace.

All our bikes are in the garage, innermost corner, away from the weather, locked to a big chain that's locked to a cement pillar. Dry enough because well aired, although in a sense outdoors (carport). Cold, though. As for a Bike Friday, some folks were having trouble with theirs recently, weren't they? Anybody know if BF has got rid of that bad mechanic who was putting bikes together wrong?

lise - i debate this too. it's got some character and maybe it doesn't look so obviously slick but i do love a nice paint job. and it'd be cool to bring it back to something like it's original state. but i'm debating. unfortunately, i do know it's one of those stealable bikes (well i do now after some research on it). kinda a bummer since i wanted a do all bike that i could run about town and not worry about theft. but the gods are a funny sort. i'm THRILLED to have her.. but now i got figure out what to do with a "beater bike"

duck - i don't know much about her. the guy that sold it to me works at a not for profit bike shop in sf. he said his friend gave him the frame. it was obviously too small for him. he said it was used as an "art project." it originally had all these stickers on it as well but he cleaned them off for me. i'm kinda bummed i didn't save the pic he posted of her with the stickers as the real "before" pic.

i went to see it and i figured even if it wasn't perfect, the money was going to a good cause.

trek - i've got an email into chris for powder coating prices.

I don't know exactly where you live, but I would not worry too much about people stealing it - especially if you make it look like a commuter bike, racks, fenders, a leather saddle. Lock it for sure if you leave it unattended. But I don't think it's the kind of bike a typical bicycle thief goes after. There's just not enough profit.

Besdes would you rather ride it and accept the risk or leave it sitting in the garage? Where by the way, it could still get stolen.

Funny to hear this coming from San Francisco. here in Seattle, if the wheels turn, it can be stolen. I think this bike looking like a beater is definitely going to keep it safer, and you will be able to enjoy it and leave it outside of the library locked and not worry about it as much as I will have to with a shiny new bike.

V - ya. i think somewhere my mind says that..but then you're talking to the person who just likes to buy wine.. and always has friends who weedle me to open it :). but yes, i hear ya about just riding the thing but then i see these posts on craigslist that say "STOLEN!! Bike brand..." I'm on the penisula.

mimi - whoa.. you surprised me. how did you know one of the places i do like to ride is the library? :)

well, in the meantime, i'm waiting for my repair stand to show up so i can start to see if i can get more done on it and see if i'm going to repaint it.

i think i am. in some places the paint is nic'd enough that the primer is showing thru. so to prevent the whole rust thing i should probably re-paint?

Also consider using J. P. Weigle FrameSaver--anti-corrosion compound that goes inside the tubes. Not sure how useful it'll be on an older frame, but there must be someone who knows.

Or if you decide to go with the "street bike" look, you could clean any rust spots and then clear coat the whole thing to prevent moisture and rust forom getting in anywhere.
