Should I eat a piece of the apple pie I'm making?

Or should I leave it in its beautiful, uncut state until Thom gets home?

margo49

Definitely not
Food is about preparation *and* presentation.
A piece missing ie cut and/or eaten out of a freshly baked pie - too obvious
You know the phrase je ne sais quoi? Well this is the opposite...everyone will sais quoi.

Since we need and respect diversity in this forum, I say wait. Pies have a much more esthetic quality uncut.

That's absolutely right--you wouldn't want to serve substandard pie--better do a taste test. Mmmmmmmm.

Ohhh...tough call....I'm in the camp for wait to share with your sweetie (but then I'm strange - I always enjoy food more when I'm sharing with others)....

Now the important question - do you have a favorite recipe? (your cookie recipes were knock your socks off good!)

but if you serve thom a piece of the pie and he never sees the whole pie, he won't know you had a piece.

HOW DARE YOU!!!!

Pies have feelings, too. Imagine if you were a pie, lovingly crafted and baked to perfection, a symbol of Americana, smelling sweetly, innocent, waiting to be partaken upon by the hard-working and faithful Thom...

Then you find yourself unceremoniously stabbed by a stainless steel knife... carved up into neat slices... pieces of you torn apart...
goopy apple sauce dripping down fingers...
sweet apple chunks slowly... falling... onto... the... plate....

Oh heck... I'll help you eat it :D

1) take staged photo shoot of pie in it's virginal complete unaltered state

quick before the crust goes pftttt.

2) post to TE :D

3) Stand by your man :D ;) and take that slice of pie for quality control and because that first slice never slices as cleanly. You're multitasking, taste test and better presentation for him. :D

This is a freakin' huge pie. My pie dish is ten inches across and the apples top out about five inches above the dish.

It's actually a rather ugly pie today. The top crust broke as I was putting it on. Actually all my apple pies end up being ugly. I'm crust challenged. But they taste pretty good. It's breakfast food here. :p

It's a pretty standard recipe. The crust has a tablespoon of vinegar added to it. It helps keep it from getting tough as you roll it out.

I add a third of a cup of Scotch to the apples as I put them in along with a sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg mixture.

but if you serve thom a piece of the pie and he never sees the whole pie, he won't know you had a piece.

Not only that, you could have your peice for quality control purposes of course. Then lovingly plate a large peice complete with acoutrement - whip cream, cheddar cheese, ice cream - thereby preserving the presentation, possibly even bettering the presentation of a whole pie.

Now next question - who here thinks it's just wrong to eat cheddar cheese with apple pie?

Do you test the Scotch?
How much nutmeg? (Anything < 1/2 a nut is a waste of hallucinogen)

Both these ingredients are only "effective" un-baked of course!

Simple solution.

1. Carefully, gently, lift section of top crust.
2. Scoop out warm, gooey apples and piece of bottom crust.
3. Replace top crust.
4. Enjoy!

Well whenever you decide to cut it, the baker of the pie ALWAYS gets to eat the first piece AND the last piece. Make sure you slice it into an odd number so you get more than Thom.

In deepest sympathy of my last baked apple pie (may it rest in peace), which I lovingly baked for my parents and placed on top of an air bake cookie sheet so it wouldn't drip in my oven - causing the bottom crust to not bake AT ALL - and I didn't know this until I served it after dinner (is this sentence long enought for ya?:p ) **deep breath**, you must try a piece now. There will be no presentation if the bottom crust didn't bake, only humiliation which is tough to serve, even ala mode, when you have to flip the piece over, exposing a nekid bottom. Oh, **hand across forehead** the disgrace of it all....:(

Aggie_Ama
01-15-2007, 12:11 PM
Well if it doesn't look pretty, you better make sure it tastes good. You don't want to serve Thom a substandard pie, therefore the right thing to do is to ensure it is a high quality pie. :D ;)

Ride???? Yeah, it's 47 degrees here now. The pie has another twenty minutes.

I have two new Spinervals videos coming home with Thom today. I got the yoga one - okay not really a Spinerval. And the Irongirl one.

Definitely lacking motivation currently.

Well, if the pie is ugly, it might feel better if you showed your love by having a piece. It might develop issues if left to stew in its own juices, waiting to be admired by a man.:p As it's creator, I think its your responsibility to make it feel good about itself.

2 cents on motivation, because I'm clearly not going to get any PIE... :p

You had a big year last year. Some loss of motivation after a big year and a lot of accomplishments is normal, I think.

I've been through several periods where I lost motivation with riding. After some very intense training cycles where I was focussed on "x" miles or hours per day at "X" heart rate - it just killed cycling for me and I had to take some time off. When I came back (it was never like I "stopped" because I kept doing centuries, but nothing more than that and I wasn't exactly pushing myself), I rode when I wanted to and according to how I felt and really rediscovered riding and had fun with it. Then I gradually built up over a year or so and started doing tougher stuff like the doubles and Death Ride.

I don't know how your training has been over the fall and winter, but it's not a bad idea to give yourself a break from cycling and from "training" every once in a while. You won't lose as much fitness as you think - and more importantly you already have the "mental fitness" part down and that doesn't go away even when the legs get a bit soft - you know, the knowledge that you can do whatever ride because you did some other ride that's just as hard or harder.

I wouldn't have chosen 6 months off the bike last year, but being away from it has really made me really appreciate the time I do spend riding my bike, and in the long run, it will probably prove to have been a good thing (and not just because now I have almost normal lung capacity!). It also made me remember that even if I don't ride both weekend days or 3 days during the week or whatever, I can still get enough riding in to do the rides I want to, perform decently and still have a life. I'm trying to balance it out more - adding the horseback riding in has been fun, because PP enjoys that more than riding the tandem (I will continue to try the tandem, but no way would she ride in this cold!).

Enjoy the pie! :)

If the pie's presence in your kitchen is respectful and sensitive, I see no reason it should not be allowed to stay without being made to feel in danger of being eaten. However, if it starts to show signs of being too cinnamon-laden, or starts to show an unnatural interest in the dirty dishes, it should be swiftly consumed.

Veronica
01-15-2007, 12:38 PM
I know a lot of it is that I just don't like leaving the house. I actually get kind of nauseous before I leave for work every day. It's alright if we leave together. Weird huh.

And I absolutely hate that I'm having this reaction and I can't control it.

Well... if I'm going to eat pie... I need to ride.

Well...umm here's an idea...

You could freeze the pie & send it to Seattle/vancouver/victoria(put name of place here) in May/June or whatever month we're there...

Or we could re-think our possible flight route, fly through SF and have a picnic with the funky funky SF ladies..

Or you could just freeze the pie and ignore it. One day you'll go to make another one but there'll be a submilinal message coming from your freezer telling you " No no no you must have ME, ME, ME..Yes, ME the wonderful apple pie you made & forgot..the peices are so lonely in the dark"

 It's 630am & these are my thoughts... :D

Yeah, I'm weird, but last summer when we were having the discussion of eating protein after rides, I tried eating a bit of tofu after rides, and it did all the magical things it was supposed to - not that I can remember what the magical things were now...

Of course, I rarely turn down an apple pie, either. (Someone else can have all my bananas)

I suppose. Just don't have too much fun reading personal posts. :p

The pie was a mistake. Actually I made a mistake. I could blame it on the recipe paper being really grody and I couldn't read it, or the fact that Thom wasn't here to cut up the apples for me, or PTSD... I left out a whole cup of shortening! I should have taste tested!

I don't know if we'll even eat anymore of it. Thom's comment, "It tastes like store bought."

I'll need to make up for it with a pot pie I guess. :p Or maybe beef and beer stew with dumplings.

V - DH is an equisite pie maker, (a big reason why we are married, but that's another story). He says that when a pie does not turn out you simply have to chuck it, have a good cry (grieving is part of the process) and make another. Little does he know that I would sift thru the trash to find his cast-offs. He says it's part of moving on and forgetting the past, living in the moment. I say "whatever, I'm eatin it".

We got a gift from one of my clients. She runs an orchard. One of these apples is supposed to make a whole pie. It was even delicious.

Yep, its the Nana Ice Classic and no the ice hasn't broken yet. :(

One of our stodgy old tv meteorologists got asked in an interview once whether there were any folksy weather signs he believed in ... ya'know, like lots of rohan berries means no snow, or lots of rohan berries means lots of snow (yep, both are thought to be true, though maybe not by the same people). Anyways. he said there was one he thought held up to scientific testing:
If the lake ice can support a grown horse at Midsummers ...
Then we're going to have a late Spring.
