She's OK!!!

But broke her elbow in three places. She's staying overnight in the hospital and being looked after by her good friend Dave.

I wasn't with her when it happened but the story goes ... there was a can in the bike path and while trying to avoid it, her tires got caught in a crevice in the road. In typical bikegoddess fashion she insisted that the girls help her take off her jacket so the medics wouldn't cut it. That must have hurt! Gotta love her!

I'm sure she will post more details in a few days but I wanted to ask you all to send positive vibes her way for a speedy recovery!

I imagine she is pissed off that she will be off the bike for awhile. Sending healing thoughts your way BG!!!

BG -- Best wishes for a speedy recovery!! I fractured my radius a few years ago (wiped out ice skating). One bit of advice---move it as soon as you are able. A lot of folks have problems regaining range-of-motion after breaking elbows. Even though it hurt like the bejezuz, I made myself straighten, rotate, move the joint, as soon as possible. I wasn't in a cast, thank goodness, just a sling---it was a minor break.

I agree.
Worst-case scenario - do what I did - twist the handlebar off-centre to accomodate the unstraightenable arm. Looks silly but you get used to it. And of course *anything* (incl looking silly or having asymmetrical bars)) is better than not riding at all.

It does take *time* but as long as you are making positive progress no matter how little or even just not regressing you are On The Way
Also take pain meds in quantity.Keep it warm too and also hydro-therapy or showers. I also brushed it a lot with one of those soft-ish back scrubber brushes to stimulate both the circulation and the nerves.

Well done saving the jacket. I piked and told them to cut off my almost-brand-new sports bra which they couldn't seem to figure out its velcro/scotch straps and front fastening .They kept trying to turn me over to find some regular hook and eye fastening; all the while trying not to notice the mono-tit on the one side and not lose the silicon prosthetic on the other side at the same time!!

Feel free to pm me - I am Quite the Expert

I was thinking about what she will need (she may already know this, I didn't and it took me a week to be able to gather it all and care for myself)...

box of tall trash bags, rubber bands, and waterproof tape to cover the cast in the shower (dr. advised that press and seal saran wrap, but it didn' work as well as the old trash bag for me)

shampoo, conditioner and body soap in pump bottles for one handed use. (I couldn't lift the bottle and shake it to dispense into the other hand)

Blow dryer stand/holder (I found one on ebay) made all the difference for one handed blow drying.

hope she's doing ok today....will she need surgery?

ps: didn't log on as myself cause it was mr.s laptop and I'm kinda awkward with it. It was just less steps to post. I still don't have too good of range of motion on my right hand/arm yet. On the desktop, I can tilt the mouse (it's a thumb mouse)to use it better.

Dear BG;

Sending healing thoughts your way. I have heard of a siliscon skin that can fit over you cast so that you can shower, and even swim. Net search or ask a reputable ortho dealer...they will know what I mean.

more important than what bike was she on is which arm she broke. I remember the ER docs first words to me this past August (when broke my shoulder) was: "You aren't left handed?" (no I'm not). This is assuming she's going to be stuck with a sling /immobilizer as well as a cast.
I agree with all the stuff silver mentioned, Does she live by herself? I almost couldn't get dressed a couple of days

I just talked to BG on the phone.

She's spunky as ever but having trouble keeping food down. She can't type but told me to tell everyone how much she appreciates all the support and well wishes. She's also aware of the bikejournal thread.

She broke her femur and will be in a cast for approximately three weeks, then she'll start physical therapy.

She was on the Jamus, not the Scott, so her steel bike held up well to the crash. They cut the remainder of her bike clothes so she was happy to save her favorite bike jacket!

BikeMomma
01-15-2007, 03:43 PM
Hmmm....les'see if I remember from anthro class: the elbow (unless you're very young and the bones haven't fused) is actually part of the ulna bone, which is one of the forearm bones. The other forearm bone is the radius. The upper arm bone is the humerus (nothin' funny about it tho').

Speaking of breaking bones, interesting timing that my oldest son's friend two doors down recently broke his forearm while riding his scooter (ate it right in front of me)...I think his break was to the radius (haven't seen the x-rays, so don't know for sure). I got to play nurse by splinting it and driving him and his older sister to the hospital, as his parents weren't home. The whole incident peaked my son's interest in anatomy, so we've been poring over our recent Barnes & Noble purchase on human anatomy. Interesting stuff.

Hey BG, what color cast did you get...huh?? Huh?? (imitating my 5-yr-old quizzing the neighbor).....:p

Again -- whatever bone you broke, hope you heal quick!!

Lots of healing needed. If you are doing PT, ask for some exercises for your shoulder as well. 3 months after my radial head fracture I got adhesive capsulitis in that shoulder. Flexibility is good. Heal well.

She's probably on some major pain meds. That upset my stomach and caused me to say all sorts of goofy things. I'm sure that we'll get the whole story later.

I too, hope it's not her dominate arm. I broke my right arm (the ulna and I'm right handed) and it's a real problem.

I had a blue cast, btw.

Oh, that brings up another thing that she'll need...a sharpie for signing her cast! I had a silver sharpie:D

Hope you heal quickly - When your legs need a ride but you still can't lean on your arm, maybe see if you can borrow a recumbent? If you were here in Portland, I'd let you use my extra one. Let me know if that sounds like something you might want to try, and I'll see if someone local to you has a loaner. I'm not trying to convert you ;) just an option to keep you riding.

I saw my ortho surgeon Wednesday the 18th. Apparently I had 3 fractures in the femur area. 2 look like they are pretty much closed, one shows bone growth around the area but it's not there yet. (Amazing what you can see on XRays!)

So I continue my PT program (Physical Torture) 2x a week which consists of major stretching of my reluctant tendons (ouch!) and lots of heat. I am making progress but I have a ways to go yet to get my arm completely straight.

I'm on a restricted work program with a 2lb weight limit. Pretty hard to do my job (reaching up for china and crystal) so I'm still homebound. However, I do my exercises and walk with a couple of cancer patients which helps my mood a lot. Fortunately I can drive short distances so I can get around to appointments and such.

I started spin classes about 2 months ago. That has really helped my attitude and my fitness level. I go three times a week. Am thinking I'll start increasing my sessions to 5x a week in May so that when I am finally able to be back on the bike it won't be such a hard transition. I'm thinking that I'll continue spin classes as I find them quite useful and fun (most of the time).

Thanks for all your support and comments along the way. I read many of your posts, just don't have a lot to say.

Hope to see you on the road sometime in June!:D :D :D

Very gentle (((hug))) from across the pond and healing vibes on their way to you.

A few years ago I broke a bone in my hand (5th metacarpal). The hospital wanted to open my hand and pin the bone. I'm the biggest coward going and refused. They told me the bone would set all wrong and I'd have a deformed hand. Anyway, they stuck it in a cast. I put a haematite bracelet (you know one of these stretchy beaded ones) over the cast as haematite has healing properties to help broken bones mend. The hospital were amazed at how quickly the bone healed up and my hand is as straight as it's always been. One of my friends recently broke a bone too and she tried that and it helped.

Hope you're back on your bike soon.

It was nice to see everyone of you at Cinderella (that seems like ions ago) and the pre Cindy dinner.

And it's so neat that Spazz is riding again.

Yep spinning the days away.......and now the weather is getting to be our kinda riding:( :(

Have fun those of you in SLO wildflower ride. Am looking forward to pictures. And the SR Wine Country- that's such a fun ride. Hopefully you will have fabulous weather.

Next Tues-- May 1st- I"m sagging for our club- they are doing an interesting ride on Knoxville road starting and ending at Pope Valley. Something like 85 miles. MP and V- you've done some of this on the Knoxville double, right? I'll try to remember to get some pics for you all. Pretty time of year to be out that way.

I'll keep an eye out for you all (in the forums, that is):p

Nancy enjoy Knoxville Road. I think it is one CREEPY road and would never ride it without some sort of SAG or supprt - so they're lucky to have you. But part of my sense of its creepiness may be because Kville Double travels it during hunting season so there are all these trucks pulled over to the sides of the road with people off hunting. What, I don't know.

MP- yes, I have driven Knoxville Rd right after the Amgen Tour came past Moskovitz corner as we were checking it out for a later ride (this one coming up).
