I was on ebay and noticed this lady had posted sizes I was not familiar with. What is a ladies size 20 or 16?

Here's a link to a sizing chart that might be helpful in answering your question - it does conversions between sizes used in different countries. Of course these sizes may have nothing at all to do with reality since the actual size seems to be manufacturer-specific (at least in women's clothing). I'd love to see some consistency.

Womens' sizes don't stop at 8 or 10. They continue upward in even numbers. It's not rocket science.

They are sizes for larger women, sometimes called "Plus" sizes.

I know someone who takes a size 0.
She's very petite and very very slender.
Good thing she's also very nice, otherwise I'd hate her :D

One of my sisters wears a 22. Another is size 18.
Yep... they are not little.

Interestingly, a few years ago I was in the States and decided to shop at Target. I was shocked and amazed to be able to wear a size 3!!! A size 5 is usually as low as I could get into at the time (larger today)....
And then there is the difference between stores. In a Bootlegger I take a Large or a size 12 and in Suzanne's, just a few doors away, I was fitting into a size 6 petite. Go figure!!

I wear a 16 pretty consistently, and it seems I can find that size in both plus size and regular size stores. Certain designers size differently, though, and in Liz Claiborne I can wear a 14, but my wedding dress was a couture size 22! (which I had to alter for my top half).
I'm not a size, though, I'm a person. :D
I really find it hard to believe that one has never run across a size 16 or plus sizes, though. Where do you shop?

This is why I almost never buy clothes online. Who knows if they will fit? Why can't we just adopt a system like men's clothing?
*sigh*

I found some womens doufold shirts on ebay. I do not own any duofold unless my ll bean river driver shirt counts. All the wool shirts I own are... one I got in Australia. It is great as a base layer. A little rough though effective. And then I own a cuddle duds shirt. And that is it besides couple wool sweaters. I want to get a good wool base layer but not ibex or anything like that to much $$$$. Oh I almost forgot about my wonderful ibex cycling sweater my dh gave me for christmas last year. That is a sweet sweater. So anyway I wear a small to med and was not familar with number sizing on shirts. Seems strange I wouldn't? I don't kow I just go for s ,m or L depending on the fit.

Nice one! :D
I do a slow burn every time I shop for clothes. I'm not hugely overweight but I do need to lose my tummy, so I wear 16 if it's a good quality garment or 18 if it's some cheaper/off brand item. Same with shoes :(
I was wearing size 14 in high school 30 years ago, and didn't have an ounce of fat. Now, I just shop for comfort and don't give a toss about what size something is.

Grrr... no clothes in my size. I can fit a child's size L or XL... but I really hate going into the kiddie section...
At least bike clothes are stretchy-shrinky, I can try them on without feeling like such a knob.

Hold the phone.... I don't think you meant you were a size 16-18 in shoes, right??
I'm an 11 in shoes. ;) I was a 10 before I had my daughter and went up a full size. 11 is tough enough, but if I were to have another kid, I'd have to shop at the drag queen stores for shoes.

Maillotpois - you made me laugh...I'm a 10 now too, and I worry what will happen when I do have kids!

LOL. It does kinda sound like it, doesn't it?!
But no, I take a size 9 if it is a good quality shoe, and up to 10 or 10 1/2 for crappy stuff (like the cheap sneakers and boots I buy just for working around the property and such...size 9 never fits).

You can't compare today's sizing with that of 30 or more years ago. Vanity sizing has completely changed everything. A size 10 of the 60s is about a 6 now. There are 2 exceptions: Bridal wear and pattern sizing. Next time you go by a Joann's or Hancock's, go in, pull a pattern and look at the measurements for various sizes. They are still true to the original American sizing system.
Does anybody remember when blouses were sized 30, 32, 34, etc?

You're exactly right. Back then there was no need for a size zero or (gasp) double zero! I have to admit to liking the modern sizing better, but they can't keep making sizes larger and larger lest the tiniest women start needing negative sizes! :D

Luckily, I like my size 10-12-14-16-18's baggy enough that when my weight fluctuates, my clothes still mostly fit.
