Woke up to this, this morning. Ten cm so far, and still coming down in buckets. And an arctic outflow expected this afternoon, dropping temps to the -10C range. Enough already!
I really really really really really miss summer....:(

I don't know how you do it! I'm not a snow fan, I don't ski anymore so I have no need of the stuff, I just want sunshine and blue sky's and decent temps.

then there's Seattle where they have non-stop news coverage of the WEATHER and we get 1/2" that melts even on the grass.
Send your snow down here! I'm ready for it!

You got a lot of snow. Down here in Kent we got just a sprinkle, which is melting as I type...we are just hoping it does not turn into ice on the way into work this evening.

I'm jealous!! I want snow too! We didn't get any in Norway when I went home for the holidays and here in the south of England none is every likely to appear! I miss skiing....and the excuse to put studded tires on my bike...and bundling up in warm wool clothing and playing in the snow....building snowmen, sledding, making snow angels....did I mention I'm jealous? If you don't want the snow, feel free to ship it over. I will happily take some...

I love the snow - I figure if it is going to be cold it might as well snow. Then I can go out and shovel, snowshoe, and cross country ski! Otherwise, I'm stuck in the gym or on my trainer - yuck

We seem to be having a perpetual drought so the snow just isn't what it used to be anymore::(

SEND IT TO VERMONT!!!!
DH and I are heading there tomorrow night for a weekend of skiing. It's looking like we *might* be able to get 2 days in, before it turns to rain.
Miserable excuse of a "winter" here on the east coast. It was down to 30 F this a.m. - the coldest I've seen in ages. Good grief.

on a happy note, there was a brief period of heavy flurries/snowshower here in Philadelphia

mayhaps Mama Nature decided to get her winter on?

All right, I lied. After I went to bed it started snowing again. We woke up to three inches of snow. Fortunately Mr. East Hill is good at driving in snow and he knows how to put chains on the pickup.

I got an entire two miles on the mountain bike today (the 10th)!

We organise ski competition in my town every year, and thay had to make artifitial snow and pray to God it will indure the heat. Problem is that last year the winnter was not so cold, and than the summer wasn't so hot either. And I love hot summer

We've certainly had winter in Missouri, but have we seen snow??? Nope, just inches and inches of ice. You can't even walk on the stuff, much less drive. It's so dangerous. We were hit again yesterday and the electricity has been off twice since 5am. Last time people were out of power for a week or two, which makes me nervous. It's not suppose to stop until Monday morning. I'd love a beautiful snow.

Poor you, Claudia! We have been lucky not to have any ice (or snow) this winter, but a few Decembers ago, we had a terrible ice storm here in NC, and we were without power for three days. Thank goodness we had our (free-standing) wood stove and plenty of firewood. We were able to make some yummy soups on it and melt ice to pour into the toilet tanks (we have an electric well pump) so we could flush occasionally. I enjoyed catching up on lots of reading and listening to our hand-crank/solar-powered radio as there wasn't a whole lot else to do w/o computers, TV, etc. I didn't ride the trainer because we couldn't even shower! It also wasn't safe to go outside with ice-laden branches crashing around out there. Maybe another use for your bike helmet?! :(

Hope it melts quickly and the power stays on!

I posted some time ago about my brother's death and he was the ultimate ski-bum living in Girdwood, Alaska the site of the best skiing in Alaska (Alyeska Ski Resort). Anyway...my other brother has called weekly to tell me they've had the BEST skiing season ever. Lots and lots of powder and people keep skiing up to my brother saying that "Rob sent this!"*

It makes me very happy on their behalf.

*My brother Rob suicided on 11/11/06.

Emily,
Thanks for your post! The helmet is probably a good idea as trees are coming down left and right. I've never experienced that before, but the power is still on. The AmerenUE trucks are all over the place and they put cones out in the middle of the road where there may be a potential problem with a line and a tree, and they are watching these spots. It's very interesting and they are really on top of things. These guys said they would be out all night making sure the power stays on. (Small town, we know everyone) I'll have to let UE know I appreciate their efforts. I'm sure they get very few compliments!!!

Raindrop,
I read your posts about your brother in the fall, and I'm so glad you are remembering your brother this way! It certainly takes a long time for the pain to ease over something like this, (I know - father- 16 years ago), but never doubt where they are right now!

Put me down for the next ss exchange. I'll trade for anything else, snow, sunshine, hot and humid...

The ice is STILL here and we haven't had school all week. Power is not restored yet. My power stayed on, but I am in the minority. Most people have wood stoves or gas heating but my friends all come over to watch tv and SHOWER. They can't stay long as they have to make sure that the pipes don't freeze. Every evening my son has had a roomfull of teenagers playing xbox...

Emily, I have to tell you that I walked downtown this weekend (I just HAD to get some exercise) and when I got there, I thought about what you said about it being dangerous to go outside. It wasn't too bad around my house, but in town some lines were down, laying in the road, and I watched tree limbs crash around me and I thought "I am soooooooooo stupid to be out here". It looked like a tornado hit. How did your trees fare after the ice? Some trees here are losing most of their limbs. The ice is still on them. Are they going to survive?

Anyone else have this $%^&* ice?

Emily, we had ice that year in Virginia, too! We hardly ever get large amounts of snow, but because - I suppose - we're near the coast - we get lots of ice. Power was out for thousands of folks (my daughter and family included) for three weeks!
We've had a really easy winter so far, with temps more like spring than winter, but I think that's changing... temps in the teens and it's snowing now...:(

Everybody, be safe, it'll be over soon...:)

ps... has anyone noticed that the days are really getting longer?? I looked out yesterday afternoon and it was 5:15 and still very much light... not too long ago it was very dark by 5 p.m.!

ok ok I know I'm reaching here... but a little hope!:o

I don't think we had any trees die as a result of losing limbs from the ice storm, as I recall, anyway. Now if a tree loses most/all it's limbs, that is probably a different story, we just had scattered limbs here and there, not all off one tree.

So sorry you're still suffering with the ice. It sounds terrible! We finally got our first little snow this morning (after 70 degrees on Sunday!), just 1" and very pretty. Much, much better than ice. I've been seeing the footage from Mo. on the news, and it looks horrendous. What a winter this has been for so many!

Hope you thaw out very soon, but it will take months to clean up all the damage. I remember seeing piles of branches by the road waiting for pickup months after our storm here. Same as after Hurricane Fran....

Jeannie - it's snowing in Richmond???? aaaaaaaak! No snow up here yet - but cloudy and chilly - about 22 degrees this morning when I left the house.

I hear there is more in store for the southern plains - everyone, like Jeannie said, please be safe!

Oh, you RICHMOND people. I have a friend who moved there in September. Every day for the past week she has called and given me the temperature. On Monday while it was -5 windchill here, she had to tell me when the 66.8 temp changed by a tenth of a degree while we were catching up. Tuesday she indicated that it was a cold snap in the 40s. I told her what she could do with her cold snap. I'm not sure I would know how to handle it if the temp got above freezing...

I was in Richmond that winter of the two major snowstorms... I remember them finding the frozen people when it finally melted :( Folks had gone out to their mailboxes andsuch, fallen... and didnt get up. :(

Looks like potential for some really messy stuff for the mid-atlantic coming up!! Collect those power bars and water...

Yeah, I don't know what happens to people around here when it snows - many of them do things they shouldn't. The drivers are nuts - NUTS I tell you! And it seems, as soon as the first flake starts falling, they ALL want to get out on the road... Not to mention the run on the grocery store for toilet paper, milk & bread!

I am 90 miles northeast of Richmond - less traffic, but no fewer nutty drivers in the snow...

Yes!! I've definitely noticed that. I usually leave work between 5:15 and 5:30, and where before Christmas it was pitch dark at that time, it's now downright bright if the day is not seriously overcast. Spring is coming, huh??? Didn't know what this thread was about due to title, so I'm way late . . . but let me just say you New Englanders are welcome to take your winter back from us. Usually when it snows here it only sticks around for a couple of days, the sun comes out and melts everything quickly. However we still have a ton of snow everywhere from the blizzards before and after Christmas. Did I mention I actually got a day off of work weeks after that just because the 80 mph wind blew the snow back into the roads making travel treacherous. Then on top of the wind and snow, the high last Saturday was 9 F. Today its 28, sunny but windy, and dropping below 0 every night this week. Arg! We always get weather like this every winter, but not for an entire MONTH! I walk around in a constant state of fear of slipping on the ice everywhere (my yak trax are on back order).

Sooooo looking forward to my trip to AZ to see the parents and in-laws at the end of the month.
