Bikemomma's mention of the Fremont Criterium in June reminded me about the Early Bird Criterium Series which is held in Fremont in January.

I live right near there and I bike past that location whenever I'm heading over the Dumbarton Bridge to the peninsula, so when the Early Bird Series is being held I often stop by to watch.
Anyone here going to take part in it?

this series is so much fun! the mentoring is great. I did it in 2002 and 2003 and DH and I did it in 2004. we talked about doing it last year but the weather was cruddy.
for anyone interested in "dabbling" in racing, this is a fun event.

I was looking at doing the Jan. 28th Early Bird, but after looking at the race calendar and comparing it to my training schedule, it looks like my season may start off with the Dinuba Crit on Monday Feb 19th. That will be good prep for the first Merced series on the weekend immediately following (RR Saturday, crit Sunday).
Velogirl mentioned the Early-Birds are typically crash-fests......

jobob, *I'm* not doing them (can you imagine me racing ) but my DH is. :) So I was out there this morning watching him ride (Cat 5 Masters). It was -cooooooooooooooold-
There were two crashes that happened during his race. The second occured when the pack came back upon the first crash as they attempted to avoid it. The race got called then.
One thing that I noticed was that after the crashes, there wasn't alot of information available to those of us who were watching the crit. It seems that communication across the course isn't very good.

I'm off the bike for the moment nursing a vertebre/disc injury. Had me flat on my back for three days last weekend, then made it to the chiropractor on Monday. Gee, feels great to walk!! Anyhoo....not sure now how my early season will end up, but I'm still going to try to make Feb. 19th my first race. Doc says I can try the trainer now, but only sitting straight up like I'm riding no-hands and only if I don't feel any additional pain with it. We'll see.....
Hope your dh wasn't involved in the crashes, Mel!!

Bummer, Kim!! Sorry about that old injury. (I've started riding (horses) again and am hoping I don't do something stupid that puts me off the bike. Easy to do.) I hope it continues to improve so you're back on track.

BM, I'm sorry you're old injury is flaring up. :( Hurting is never fun.
Neil wasn't involved in the crash, but it didn't stop me from worrying. I saw the pack come around during the neutral lap, but I didn't see him (he was on the inside supposedly) so I stood there worrying till I saw him riding up.
I sometimes worry so easily. It's kind of annoying. :(
