What is the purpose of colored lenses?

I know from snowboarding that orange is good for giving snowy terrain more contrast, but I don't know how it applies to cycling. Lens colors range from browns to oranges to yellows and even pinks... it there a reason for this, or is it just cosmetic?

I just googled.

I personally like polarized lenses whenever possible and always around water and snow.

I use green for bright sunny days and amber for overcast cloudy days.

Sunglass lens color has a huge effect on my overall mood. Strange, but true! (fer gawdsakes, don't let me wear gray lenses!) I have amber sunglasses and yellow rainy-day bike glasses.

My orange set (I have interchangeable ones - orange plus grey for sunny, clear for rainy) enhances contrast in foggy fall conditions. It's really quite surprising how much it does.

Well, I allways heard that yellow/orange work well in the rain or foggy conditions. I never tried it but multiple people said it, I compromised and bought a clear set of lenses for situations with limited light or bad weather

With 'normal' conditions I use my 'racing red (http://www.rudyproject.com/img/lenti_racing_red.jpg)' lenses, they just take away the bright sparks but keep every detail clearly visible.
