We can't afford a good full suspension, so we are looking at a better hardtail right now.

When I was shopping around for a 'cross/commuting bike, I got tons of recommendations for Jamis bikes. Several of the guys at work ride them and sing their praises.

As for the bike you want, she's a beauty. But then again, I have a weakness for pink!! It's nice that it has disc brakes, too.

I know nothing about MTB's but have been told by the LBS that Jamis
makes really good bikes. If you like pink that is a hot looking bike.

This bike is heavy. Boat anchor heavy. Well, maybe not quite, but you will feel the weight. It also only has an 8 speed cassette. I think you need to look around for a bike with a little bit better components, and with a 9 speed cassette. This doesn't necessarily mean a lot more money. For example the Giant Rainier and the Trek 6000 have 9 speed Deore Shifters and derallieurs which are better than the Alivios on the Jamis. They are not wsd but sometimes you will find that the wsd bikes have lesser components than their unisex counterparts (not Trek). I personally don't care for wsd in a mountain bike (the Trek in particular was cramped, as was the Specialized), and reach can be adjusted with spacers, stem length, and set back seat posts.

I think you might want to post your budget on mtbr.com forums under beginners or the what bike to buy and see what responses you get.
