View Full Version : RoadID - Which one do you prefer?
I am ordering RoadID for a few people in my family as gifts. (http://www.roadid.com)
I have a Fixx one but I know it's not everyone's preference. Help me choose (for theirs). (Getting a gift card is not an option.)
Which do you prefer?
Ankle?
Wrist?
Fixx (neck)?
Shoe?
And why?
Thanks for your help!!

Definitely shoe, for both me and Mr. Salsa---least annoying, don't need to take it on and off, etc. Just put it on the shoe and it stays there.

I prefer the shoe type, but now that it's cold and I'm wearing my toe covers, I use the ankle strap so it can be seen. I bought both types (one metal thing with info, two holders) not knowing which I'd like better, but I have found I need both.

I got the wrist version, then picked up a cool looking strap for it at the local outdoor gear shop. By getting a fun, colorful strap, the wristband then becomes a nifty accessory to my outdoor apparel.

I think this is a great idea! I'm also buying these for gifts and was having a hard time deciding... Cool!

I haven't gotten one yet, but I've been thinking ankle. I'll need it to come off easily because eventually I'll be running, too.

I have the ankle strap. Love it - I don't even know its there.

I got both the ankle and the wrist strap. I wear the ankle strap the most, but sometimes switch to the wrist because I love that brilliant yellow strap! The wrist strap is a little more noticeable in terms of feeling it when I ride. Like Sulis, I find that I don't even feel the ankle strap.
I also got Road IDs as gifts for some motorcycle riders in my family.

I have medical alerts bracelets. A pretty streling silver one and a sport one. The sport one is very similar tyo the RoadID. I bought the wrist ones simply because that was what is available and it seems the most likely place emergency personel will look.
I have not biked with mine, but I do not even notice it when I run, if that helps.
I have both a shoe one for a pair of my running shoes that I keep at work, and a wrist one for both riding and running (the shoes at home don't have one on them). I've done 20 mile runs with the wrist ID on and haven't even noticed it (other things start hurting/bothering me more on long runs than what's on my wrist, like my leg muscles!!). Plus, I switch bikes depending on if I'm commuting or not, and each bike has a different pair of shoes, so the wrist is more versatile for me than a shoe one would be. Sometimes I forget I'm wearing it and wear it into the shower.

I have the ankle and I like it. Now that they switched to neoprene, it's soooo much more comfortable (the old material was scratchy and irritating to the skin). It's red, so it stands out from either my bare skin or my black tights in winter.
I think it depends on what your person would wear the most. You may know that they don't like to wear bracelets (wrist would be out) or necklaces (fixx would be out), but they might not mind one on the shoe or ankle. Just an example.
What a great idea! I think you're a fantastic family member for caring for their safety!

I have not gotten one but have been thinking they would make great stocking stuffers. I think I will go with the wrist bands...

I have wrist and ankle. I keep the wrist one with my helmet, and only wear it when I ride. I wear the ankle one much more often (and wear it when I ride, too!) because it's so much more comfortable and it isn't visible to every Tom, D*ck, and Harry who comes near me.
The ankle one also does a great job of holding a ChampionChip during triathlons!
I got my son an ankle one, and he seems to have lost it already.
I went the ankle, because I can wear it over my sock and I won't get a tan line from it (the road ID).
I didn't want the wrist one, because of the tan line.
I didn't want the necklace because it looked like that would annoy me on a ride.
I didn't want the shoe one, because I needed my Road ID for cycling... not running.

I also love my ankle one. The neoprene is fantanstic and I don't know I'm wearing it. More than once I've kept in on all day and into the shower (I also wear it when I go out walking in the woods). It's a must have if you work out solo!

15 years ago when I started wearing a medic alert bracelet, police and emergency personnel were required to notice a bracelet, but not a necklace. This came from two cases with diabetics in one year, one in California and one in NM - in both cases, diabetics were thrown in drunk tanks and (at least one of them) died. The courts decided it wasn't the emergency personnel’s fault for not noticing necklaces.
Don't know if this is still the case, and don't know how it would apply to road ID, just a thought.

I actually have always used the shoe. My DH calls it my "toe tag".
TsPoet - interesting point regarding the legality of the identifying tag.

For those of you with the WristID, do you wear this under or over your long sleeve jersey/jacket in the colder weather? If over, did you order a larger size to compensate for that?
I want to order these for DH and I for Christmas. Thanks for bringing this back up!

I am very happy with the ankle id. I also wear it over my sock and don't notice I have it on. In the cold weather, I wear it over my socks, tights, and neoprene boots. I didn't have to size up, there's plenty of room for expansion.
I also like that the reflective strip on the ankle band--in conjunction with the movement of the pedal stroke-- works really well to let those driving vehicles see me when I'm riding after dark, in the rain, or on grey winter days.

SheFly,
Mine is a medical alert-it needs to be seen in case of an emergency. To answer your question, the one I bought to go out in is an 8inch (which is huge but my choice was 7 or 8) but I did that on purpose. It can be adjusted down to wear against my bare skin or up to wear over my jerseys. When it is cooler I wear it over my jersey and it is bright-because if something happens I want to make it easy for emergency personnel to see it.

TsPoet,
I was told the basicaly the same thing by my doctor's office. Medical personnel are legally supposed to loook for wrist ID. My medical Alert bracelets are on my wrists and my outdoor one is bringht as it needs to be seen and no one can read it usless they are on top of me.

Hey Grog I have the Fixx like you and really like it. I know a few here have mentioned that they thought the neck one would be really annoying but I dont even notice I have mine on.
What a good gift idea.:D
Wow thanks everyone for the replies!!
Those I am ordering are not medical alerts, just emergency contact info.
I had to order last night because I had that 15% off coupon to use before midnight, so I ended up getting Wrist IDs for my partner and his dad (who had a serious accident before and they traced his wife thanks to his cell phone... lucky the cell phone was closeby and working after the crash he had). I would have preferred the Shoe ID but it's not very convenient for the type of cycling shoes they both have, plus then you have to switch it to your running shoes when you're running. But I got a ShoeID for my mom who rides and walks and doesn't have cycling shoes, so I'm assuming she's likely to always have the same shoes on. I also renewed my own (a Fixx) and treated myself to a Daisy design. :) I might get a shoe one for myself someday for the times when I run. I don't dislike the fixx around my neck but the shoe thing seems so convenient and impossible to forget...
By the way, if you get IDs for other people (yes - they're great gifts that show you care) please make sure you talk to someone close to them to identify the exact info they would want on it, or get gift certificates instead. I preferred to seek out the info because I knew they would procrastinate at using the gift certificate, and I want them to be wearing ID NOW! I also called the relatives whose number are put there as emergency number so they know about it. It can save them from some disorienting moments...

It's great for cycling but I have found that, when running, it bounces around my shirt. I then slip it in my sports bra but men don't have the option to do that!!!

I hate anything around my neck, wrists or fingers (hence no wedding ring). So I bought the shoe one, but I put it on the strap on my helmet (the V part in front of my ears.
Rational - Hopefully they will have to take my helmet off and notice it. They may not look at my shoes (although they are lipstick pink and really cute :D

I have the ankle strap ID. I had initially thought about the shoe one but I wanted to be able to also use it for running. The ankle strap sits over my socks so I forget it's there and it doesn't cause any extra (strange) tan lines. It's worked out great for running, too.

I have the Shoe ID. The rational was that I put my shoes on each and every time I ride, therefore the ID will not be accidentally left behind. I keeps trying to jump off my shoe, though. I just may have to try the helmet strap idea.
Now you guys have gotten me thinking about getting another for my wrist. An ID doesn't do much good if nobody looks for/at it. {smilie with steam coming out ears}

My vote is for the shoe...and I would hope that I would not lose my shoe if ever in an accident, at least if I lost my leg, they would be able to identify the body part. (Is that morbid or what?)

I hate to have stuff on my wrists, I don't even like long sleeves.
I have the "dog tag style", wear it on all rides ...
oh and the reverse on mine says "don't tell me what I can't do"

I'm excited. My dad was asking me what I wanted for Xmas and I had just read this, so I asked for an ankle one. Yay!
I've been meaning to get one for ages, just always kept forgetting.
Trek, I was going to have that put on it... I feel that way alot.
But I changed my mind and I asked to have this put on it: DEFY EXPECTATIONS

My husband got a shoe one, and I opted for the wrist.
I suppose it was because I was an EMT and as mentioned elsewhere here *know* that they'll check the wrist. I also got bright yellow and I think it looks awesome. The few big event rides I've done have done paper type bracelets too so, it just goes with the flow there.

I don't like things on my wrist when riding. It can aggravate my recurring tendonitis. I bought an ankle road i.d. this past weekend finally. Emergency contact #, put on my allergies status (NKA), need to know health problems, blood type, organ donor. My saying is "Not all who wander are lost".

DOH! I placed my order yesterday, BEFORE I saw this.... Oh well. Thanks to everyone for the info - these will make great gifts for DH! I ended up ordering the wrist, but also bought an ankle strap. That way, he can decide which he prefers wearing (the shoe and the fixx were both out for us...).

You don't have to have laces...I have 3 velcro straps and it fits fine around the top toe strap.
You never know it's there...

I work in an ER. I would recommend the wrist or the ankle IDs. I would NOT get the dog tag style. There are a lot of people who wear dog tags in support of someone they know in the military. We can't trust those names to be the person we have in front of us. But I think we would be able to trust the wrist/ankle bands. I would also skip anything that goes on clothing. If the paramedics have to cut off any clothes, and that includes shoes, your ID may be lost.
As far as info on the tags, name, any medical problem, allergies, and contact numbers. Skip the blood type. We have to crossmatch everyone.
I wear a medic alert tag, the sports band form, or I would have the Road ID wrist band.
I also put a copy of my drivers license, which has a picture of me, and my insurance card in a small baggy and carry that with me.

roadie gal...are you serious about blood type? I thought that would be helpful?

My doctor said not to bother adding it (I was low on room)because they would cross match it anyway, something about it being routine?
What great gifts! Not sure about where to apply, but I would choose the one that is always with me....like my shoes.

Yeah, we ignore what's written down. It's often wrong. Everyone gets crossmatched every time there's a possibility that they need blood.
Allergies and medical problems and medications are much more important.

I ordered mine today :) I got the wrist one in Pink. I wear a lot of bright colors(yellows, reds etc) so I wanted one to clash so it stands out so I got a girly color. Also I didn't think of this, but the pink color can show support for breast cancer although there are no $$ going to it. Just a thought. Small price to pay to maybe saving your own life one day if necessary. Jennifer
