OK- I did it! I have scheduled a fitting for November 14th! Thanks to all of you for the great advice!

Now - next issue. I have purchased Shimano Mountain Bike shoes BECAUSE they are more giving and more comfortable for my feet. (I've had foot surgery on one foot and my other bunion foot needs TLC.) I haven't bought cleats yet because I don't know what pedals to buy for my road bike. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. I would like to have the pedals and cleats on for the fitting on the 14th.

Thanks again. :o

I'm afraid you'll get as many answers as there are people. I started riding clipless in August with SPD 105s and have been quite happy with them. They are tension adjustable and clip on both sides of the pedal. I would suggest that you get the cleats that clip out both ways rather than just one. There is a name for that, but I'm drinking a toddy and my brain has shut down for the weekend. :o

Let us know how the fitting goes!

Lynda - Since you have already had foot surgery, my vote goes for Speedplay Frogs. The frogs will fit well on your new shoes and offer you some float. I have found the float very helpful for my right foot which already had the surgery also.

I second the vote for Speedplay Frogs.

They are extremely easy to deal with, and very kind to my grumpy hip and knee.

And the cleats fit beautifully in my mtb shoes. (I ride a road bike with mtb shoes and what used to be considered mtb pedals)

Definitely let us know how your fitting goes. I haven't seen much discussion here of Serotta fittings, so it'll be very interesting to hear what it's like. And I'll certainly be interested in what you think of Tom's ability to fit (I assume you're doing it at The Bike Escape...?), since I'm planning to have one with him, too.

And now back to the pedal/cleat discussion...

Kali - Yes, Tom is going to do the fitting. He was super nice on the telephone. Will let you know how it goes! :D Lynda

Another vote for Speedplay Frogs, though I've only had mine for a week or so now. They are super easy to get into and out of, and the huge degree of float allows my whiny left knee to get into a comfortable position--something that wasn't even close to possible with the one other clipless system I tried (can't remember its name, sorry).

I'm pretty new at this clipless game, but so far I'm loving it. I've worn old-style toeclips and straps literally for decades (still have them on my touring bike), and it is so nice not to have to bend down and tighten/loosen those blasted straps.

Let us know how your fitting goes and what pedals you settle on.

Speedplay Frogs. Tons of float. Great on knees! Girls did you see the new PINK (okay so they come in other colors too) Speedplay Light Actions? Yummy!

TrekJeni - The new Light Actions are scheduled to replace the X5 pedals. These are very easy to use - clipping in and out. I got to play on some at Interbike. These won't work on Lynda's mountain bike shoes thought - road shoes only.

My vote goes for Speedplay frogs too

I got mine in June and love them. I switch out between road shoes and MT bike shoes depending on the trip and the weather and they fit on both types of my shoes
