View Full Version : Ibex Ultimate Guide Sweater

Well, in spite of its bad gastric habits (what with that "breaking wind" thing and all ;) ), I bit the bullet and ordered the Ibex Ultimate Guide Sweater--on sale for close to half its original price. Got it Saturday, just in time to wear it to a neighborhood bonfire Sunday evening, and then again last night, and again tonight--some folks had cut down a bunch of dead trees, all pines, and that's how long it took to burn (don't want to burn that pine in your fireplace or woodstove). Anyway, even though we're in the southeast, we get these chilly evenings that get even chillier once the dew starts condensing, so my new Ibex was perfect for these bonfire evenings.
And it's so soft and yummy, and not all that heavy either. I don't see myself wearing it earlier than October or later than, say, February, but I'll wear the heck out of it in between those months. The outside seems like a pretty durable knit and the inside surface is brushed, for greater softness against the skin. Got a cool little zip pocket on one sleeve--handy for a chapstick, a whistle, or...cigarettes? Just joking, but it is about that size.
I'm thinking it'll also be handy for kayaking on those cool, clear, crisp Saturday mornings in winter. Can't wait! If you've got some cash to spare, you owe it to yourself to snag one of these beauties while they're still available at the sale price. (I swear, I don't work for Ibex!)
Bad Juju, you're my UGS (Ultimate Guide Sweater) twin sister!! (I have the blue too.)
You'll see it's even better after being washed once. The inside is so soft.
I don't know about washing it twice, I haven't convinced myself of taking it off a second time!!

just in time to wear it to a neighborhood bonfire
Oh, JuJu! This just makes me cringe. My DH wore his brand-new long-sleeved cycling jersey to a bonfire last winter... the wind changed, and sparks flew... and his new jersey has holes in it from the embers. :(
So... be careful with fire!!!

HL, that's so sad! My sweater survived the Halloween bonfires unscathed (unholed?), but I'll be extra careful at bonfires in the future. Thanks for the heads-up.

I just ordered more Ibex stuff last night.
I have their Switchback pullover sweater, though. I like their switchback wool texture. I also love their neck gaiter- really THICK wool.
Do try to avoid washing things wool too often- the less often you wash it, the longer they will last. Pure wool doesn't get smelly or dirty nearly as quickly as other fabrics. It's natural lanolin actually repels dirt to a certain extent too.
My full fingered Louis Garneau gloves (which I love) are fine for cool temps, but were not nearly warm enough last week riding at 35 degrees, so I ordered these last night from Ibex:

Jeez, I've never spent so much on gloves in my LIFE! - but if it keeps me riding through half the winter, then so be it. I love that they have the Pittard leather palms and are lined inside with merino wool. Bring on the freezing temps...I'm ready!

OOH! I want these! Let's see... pay property tax vs. buy gloves... :( I guess keeping the house wins.
Boy, this stuff is pretty. I have a Swobo jersey (short-sleeved) that I love. I guess I have to save up some money to expand my wardrobe! I'm lucky enough to have an Ibex hat, though - DH raced in the VT50, and all of the entrants got a hat... which DH gave to me! :D

Hey Seattle-girls:
I was at a seminar earlier today and in walks a guy wearing an Ibex cycling jersey.
I asked him where he got it (before we got down to talking about modelling disasters in urban planning) and he told me there is a place where they sell discounted Ibex store (among other luxury outdoor gear) near his house in Seattle.
I couldn't get much more details, but maybe some of you guys know about it??
We could have our first party there....!

Hey, I'm hoping for some for xmas but I really doubt that's gonna happen unless I treat myself. As usual, I'm the only one around here who 'gets' me, especially when it comes to biking stuff. (sigh)
Backcountry.com usually has some on sale.
I love the sweater.
Let me know how the gloves work out, Lisa. I'm looking for some warm ones, as I get cold very easy and don't warm up nearly fast enough.

I ordered both the small and the large gloves since my hand size falls right in between. I was going to send the non-fitting pair back and they'll take it off my credit card then.
I'm frustrated, because though Ibex sent me my gloves the very next day- they sent me the two in the MEN'S sizes small and medium! They were huge of course, and I couldn't tell much from putting them on, except they were soft and warm.
So they are now sending me the correct two pairs (and charging my credit card AGAIN) and then they will credit me back when they receive the two men's pairs back from me. Annoying. I get wrong items so OFTEN from various companies- why don't people double check when they pack up orders???

Well, the very next day (today) I got the correct WOMEN'S gloves from Ibex- pretty impressive speed. I sent the men's gloves back to them already (using their free shipping label). I found that the women's small fit me just right, so I will be sending back the medium pair.
However, I was mildy annoyed to find that they had charged me $10 shipping AGAIN when sending me the RIGHT gloves. It was THEIR mistake, not a typical size exchange. I called them and they promised to take the $10 off my credit card. But that's two mistakes on one order in my opinion, so it just shows you have to pay attention out there.
The gloves seem great though- I am pleased with their quality and how the feel and fit. :) They are soft and flexible and the long wrists and complete leather palms are great. I will be giving them the test of fire over the coming days in the cold. My fingers FROZE today on a 19 mile ride in 40 degrees using my "regular" lightweight full fingered gloves with a liner inside. I was toasty all over elsewhere, but my fingers were in major pain! I hope these expensive Ibex ski gloves are worth it...

I want some Ibex! one of you guys might have picked up the medium in blue of the ultimate guide sweater already! I don't even think that one would have fit me- I was planning on shrinking it. (being 5'2" is rough) Egads I am not sure what to do. I think the grey looks to mannish. I might have to buy the uber expensive icebreaker line. Does anyone have any recommedations for a similar sweater along the same line? you guys seem to have a lot of ibex going on.

If you're considering going the uber expensive Icebreaker route, then consider also the Ibex LongTrail sweater that's NOT on sale, and also their Ibex "midlayer" category Switchback line and Carrie hoody are pretty heavy and sweaterlike. I have the switchback pullover and it's wonderfully thick and warm. The small switchback pullover would fit you. I wear the small and I'm 5'5" 140 lbs. The medium was a bit too roomy on me, I wanted it more form fitting.
madscot13
11-03-2006, 08:20 PM
thanks! I was thinking about the switchback pullover. How tight is it? I want to be able to wear a jacket above it for biking along the river. I don't want to be too "flappy" when I am wearing it either- gotta show off the figure! But either way it is half the price of ice breaker stuff.

The Switchback pullover is not flappy.
I am 5'5", 140 lbs, pear-shaped. The medium fits me with a bit of room for underlayers, but I went for the small instead because it fit me like a glove and looked very tailored and sleek on me. I *could* have worn either size, but I have small shoulders and the small one had the shoulders seams in just the right place for me. Also, I only wear their ultra thin merino base layer under it, so I didn't need the extra room for things underneath it. It is by no means loose or flappy, the neck and sleeves are fitted and you could easily slide a jacket over them. It's a very nice thick soft kind of wool weave with a nice texture more like a sweater, not smooth.
I love the Ibex persimmon color in traffic!

I have the Switchback full zip. I'm 5'8" and 145 lbs and wear a Large in Ibex tops. Loooooong arms and Loooooong torso and sort of wide shoulders.
My Switchback *is* flappy and loose on me, but I wear it as a jacket over other clothes so it's ok.
The length on it is perfect. I've been finding that Ibex sizes are pretty standard across the different styles. All my tops are L and all fit great.

Thanks Grog! The best I've come up with is an outdoorsy discount store that has some of the "other" brands discounted.
There is a small bike shop that sometimes marks their Ibex down. Other than that I have no idea where he got his Ibex. Unless there is a store that is not listed on line. I even checked to see who Ibex mentions as retailers on their website.

OK, so I tested my new "uber expensive" Ibex gloves today:
http://www.ibexwear.com/F06/View_Pro...&CategoryLine=
I rode a 13 miler this morning at 35 dgrees, and a 20 miler this afternoon at 45 degrees. My hands kept comfortable! Big differnece over my other gloves. The small fit me nicely, and I still have some room to put in smartwool liners if it gets way colder like in the 20's. My hands will be fine now- what a relief. It was awful the other with TWO pairs of gloves on and my fingers in terrible pain from the cold, and that was at 50 degrees! The wind while riding is what makes it so hard to keep warm when biking.
But hey, at this price you can BET I'm going to take really GOOD care of these gloves! :o
I wore my new balaclava today too and it was just perfect. :)

Bonuses of being a box monster,
1. you are always warm
2. no skin cancer- UV rays cannot penetrate through corrugated exoskeleton.
3. always the hoot of the party
4. icky boys cannot try and make face with you
5. Bike riding just got 10x safer and skipping became 10x funner
6. no one can how much I really ate from Halloween
However, apple bobbing is much more difficult incomparison to you less right angled, bulky folk.

I am usually a medium, but in Ibex I take sometimes medium and sometimes small. In the switchback pullover I could have worn either the med or the small, but I chose the small so I could put jackets over it. You don't say what KIND of switchback item you got- pullover, full zip, vest....?

i got the pull over in a nice plum. I think it has to go back to REI though. I am thinking of picking up an icebreaker because not a lot of the ibex line appeals to me (except for the ultimate guide sweater!) I thought that the switchback was really itchy. Is the rest of ibex like that, or is the weave?
It's the "switchback" weave. Similar to "boiled wool". I happen to really like the waffle-y switchback weave feel- but then I always a soft thin base layer under it. The other Ibex wool weaves are different and not nubbly at all.
I saw the Ibex LongTrail sweater at a store this weekend. It was soft and tight weave- very elegant and smooth and thick. Nice! But I didn't need any more sweaters. The green one was a pretty & subtle cool beige/green.

you don't need anymore sweaters. i have no idea where you are from, but I disagree. New sweaters are what make it worth braving it outdoors (them and along with new mittens)! Half the reason for winter itself- the other half being the combination of snowmen, snowball fights, snow angels, snowforts, and the hot cocoa that comes afterwards. Once again I beg to disagree. what other sweaters do you have that can compare to this new unpurchased long trail?

Normally I would agree with everything you said, Madscott! ;)
Believe me, I have practically purchased an entire new wardrobe this autumn in preparation for my cold weather biking for the first time. I had nothing but inappropriate clothes before!- Baggy loose cotton sweaters, heavy coats, fashion gloves, berets, long dresses and skirts, cotton leggings, giant scarves, huge boots.... all totally USELESS for bike riding! :(
What was I thinking all these years??
DH was VERY understanding as I loaded up on merino base layers, helmet liners, gloves, socks, sweaters, hoodies, wind jackets, sweaters...you name it. Preparing for the cold. I know he is just so happy I love to bike with him now, and he loves seeing me getting into healthy shape. I showed him a drawer full of merino layers, and he said "Sweetie, I'm PROUD of you for being so determined to bike in the cold weather!". WHAT A MAN!!
I got two heavy switchback sweaters, two smartwool hoodies, a merino heavy vest, thermal windpro jacket, a gortex shell, several merino base layers to peel off and on, and I also picked up 3 all-wool turtlenecks at GoodWill on the cheap- one all cashmere, and one thick ribbed all merino turtleneck ($2.99!- my biggest steal)
And this just describes my torso layering system. We won't even get into my hands, legs and head layers...
The one thing I didn't have to buy was shoes. My Thinsulate hiking boots are working well and they fit in my pedal straps nicely and keep my feet very warm over heavy skiing knee socks.

Okay, Lisa you might be right on this one. But lets talk about legs. which kind of merino do you wear for that one?
BleeckerSt_Girl
11-14-2006, 04:21 PM
Well.....I confess...I actually don't have any merino for my legs!
DH has several nice merino chamois shorts and also long merino tights. They are cool.
But I do have several good cold weather tights of various lycra/poly/windproof/fuzzy persuasion, including two with chamois that I like, and an UnderArmour coldweather base layer tight too.
My legs are staying warm enough with either one pair long tights and wool skiing knee socks, or else with two pairs long tights (one with chamois). My legs seem to be the last thing to get cold when it's 35-45 degrees out biking. It's my other parts I have to layer up more carefully, it seems.
What about you?

Can't, can"t....have too many knickers already!!!!! :( ...and yes that IS possible, since I wear knickers from spring right through fall, and long tights in the winter. I don't get as overheated as most people. I have several pairs that are really nice now, and pretty new.
Maybe when one or two wear out...

If you buy the knickers you are supporting the farmers of New Zealand and the sewers/distributors in Vermont. No sweatshop labor.
And they are biodegradable.
And they feel goooooood!

Do it for the New Zealand sheep and non-sweat shop labor.
You're not just buying knickers, you're singlehandedly saving the economy, the planet and stopping globalization.
Do it! Buy the knickers! :D

Ok, I think one of YOU all should buy the knickers, and just hold on to them (but don't wear them) for when I need them, and then I'll buy them from you!

I think the tights would be a bit of an overkill with long underwear but it depends where you life/play...

Grog,
I think this is a great idea! But YOU should start the thread....start a thread here in Apparel called WoolWeenies Club. :) :) Then we can all keep talking about our favorite wool stuff endlessly, and others won't think we're just obsessed with Ibex Ultimate Guide sweaters!
Would you do the honors?....I love the name you picked!- "WoolWeenies Club"!! :p

because we are women and we are strong and we do not need such hyperbole or self-aggrandizement to make us feel good.
we need WOOL to make us feel good!

Well, for one... WoolWeenies sounds a lot nicer than WoolWh*res. Even if the latter is more accurate! :p
PS: A Weenie can refer to a person who really likes to geek out on a subject. Gram-weenies = people who obsessively weigh every component down to the gram.
