Maryland is adding Schaeffer Farms to the list of parks in Montgomery County that will be closed briefly this season for managed hunts intended to control the burgeoning deer population.

Schaeffer will be closed to all park users from November 25 until December 9, and on January 5th and 6th, 2007. Other nearby parks to be closed for hunts include Hoyles Mill, Little Bennett, and others. See press release with the list of parks and the closure dates below. While this is the first year for hunting at Schaeffer, Montgomery has hunted in the model airplane area adjacent to Schaeffer in the past.

DEER MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES APPROVED
SILVER SPRING, MD - The Montgomery County Department of Parks plans to continue its deer management
strategies this fall and winter. These initiatives will include carefully managed shotgun hunts in which only hunters who meet
the highest level of state and county safety standards are permitted to participate.
Each participating park location will be closed from sunrise until sunset on hunting day(s) (see schedule below). Appropriate
park closing notices will be posted throughout each park. Expertly trained Park Police officers will conduct sharpshooting
operations at some of the parks. Those parks will be closed to the public from 5:30 p.m. until sunrise from January 1
through March 31, 2007. Appropriate park closing notices will be posted throughout those parks as well.

During the fall and winter, deer management is scheduled in the following parks;
Blockhouse Point Conservation Park, in Darnestown
Managed shotgun hunting: Tuesday, November 14

Bucklodge Forest Conservation Park in Barnesville: Managed shotgun hunting: November 17, December 1 and January 6

Goshen Recreational Park, and undeveloped park in Goshen: Shotguns and muzzle loaders all year, archery during season:
Mondays through Saturdays

Great Seneca Stream Valley Park and North Germantown Greenway Park in Goshen: Managed shotgun hunting:
Wednesdays—November 8, 15 and 22, December 13, 20 and January 3

Hoyles Mill Conservation Park in Boyds: Managed shotgun hunting: October 13 and 21, November 4, 10 and 18,
December 2, 9
and 16, and January 5 and 19

Little Bennett Regional Park in Clarksburg: Managed shotgun hunting: December 5 through 8 Little Seneca Stream Valley
Park in Boyds

Managed shotgun hunting: November 18, December 2 and 9, and January 5
Rachel Carson Conservation Park in Brookeville: Managed shotgun hunting: Monday, November 13

Woodstock Equestrian Park in Beallsville: Managed shotgun hunting: October 14 and 28, November 3, 11and 17,
December 1 and
29, and January 6 and 13.

Police-based sharpshooting: evenings January through March:

Black Hill Regional Park in Boyds
North Branch Stream Valley Park in Derwood

MoCo's been doing these managed hunts for years, but they've definitely expanded the list of parks this year. If you lose track of the schedule, just look for yellow signs posted at the park before you head out on the trails.

And, as an addendum to that list, they've been allowing bow hunting along the Seneca Greenway in lower MoCo. Biking's not allowed along that section of the Greenway, but anyone who hikes that section should be aware.
