Okay, so you have to prove you're a cop to get them. I'm befuddled. What do police bikes do that other bikes don't do? Have rear ends that explode on impact?

This model for Police Use only. Proof of identification and/or department affiliation is required.

Patrol Bike (http://dynamicbicycles.com/buy/Bikes.php?prodid=62)

Pursuit Bike (!!!) (http://dynamicbicycles.com/buy/Bikes.php?prodid=61)

These are shaft drive from the same company where we got ours. Do other companies also make police bikes?

LOL, at my old college, the campus police had regular Raleigh's that they spray painted "POLICE" on:eek:

I thought most police bikes were made by Trek.

We have bike cops here. They are kind of hot.

we have bike cops here too. I see them downtown a lot. we have some incredibly stiff grades on the hills here, scary with a std shift car...

these guys go up and down those dear hills all the time. and yes, they have nice legs

They have coffee and doughnut holders on them! (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

Probably because the have "Police" on them you have to have proof you are in law enforcement.

Just as not everybody can drive a car with "police" painted on the side, they probably don't want to sell a "Police" bike to just anyone - think of the anarchy that would create if anyone could impersonate an officer just by buying a bike.
I always figured they were modified after the sale, but perhaps not. It certainly allows a company to track demographics and trumpet how often their bikes are used for the civic good.....

The KHS police bike comes with red and blue lights. Not sure about all the others though.

Police bikes are new for the company I linked to. They didn't have them when we bought ours in June.

Okay, so the "police" painted on it is probably the reason why they won't sell them to just anybody. But I do like the idea of donut/coffee holders and exploding rear tires.

We have bike cops in downtown Dallas, and also mounted police. I love the mounted ones best, but the bike cops are great, too!

The police that patrol the airport in Atlanta use Cannondales.

I had heard that they have freewheels that are completely silent, so they can move stealthily.

Maybe they have some secret James Bond type functions that they only reveal to police officers.

Maybe they paint POLICE on thier bikes so big because they don't want their bikes to get stolen like everyone else's bikes! :(

I know some officers that should be out riding bike patrol, (minus the coffee/donut holders :D ).

One of the guys in our club has a Smith & Wesson bike that he got through a cop friend, but he took off the "police" part (or got one that didn't have it). The valve caps were designed to look like bullets.

I couldn't find the spoke lights I picked up at ****'s Sporting Goods (I know this is going to get censored... it's that big box place named Richard :)), but I have a feeling that red and blue lights are going to be enough - I know a kid told a mom "look at that police woman!" when I was riding the black Schwinn with my bright safety-bike-dork gear on... (Dork's Sporting Goods would have come through? INteresting...) My rainsuit is all yellow and black, my gloves are black... Maybe it's a good thing Critical Mass is too far away to get to by bicycle from work :) :)

LOL... yeah, it's the Police on them that make 'em special...

I actually volunteer for SDPD... and I gotta tell ya, the police need to learn some bike maintenance stuff! I have not seen dirtier chains... (you should see the rookie marks they get!) or ones more in need of some cleaning and lube! I told 'em next time I work an event I'll bring my chain cleaner and simple green as well as my tri-flow and we'll make 'em run a little better... I'm shocked they can actually CATCH anyone on them!

We are currently favoured with re-runs of Pacific Blue (think 1980-ish and/or Baywatch on bikes) on a cable tv channel called AXN.

Yup, it's just that it has "police" on it that makes it so you need qualifying ID to purchase it. I've found "police" bikes actually much heavier than most in that price range... not sure if it's special stuff to reinforce the bike, or just that most departments buying bikes for their officers seem not to know much *about* bikes...
xh and I had matching guide gold/black cycling jackets, helmets and similar colors on our bikes... both carried backpacks, etc. People mistook us for bike cops all the time. I didn't mind because it meant people would watch a little more and be a little more careful not to hit us... ;)

Interesting Tidbit about Police on bikes over here...

On the news the other night I noticed they have blinky lights on the visors of their helmets... One Red... ONE BLUE! lol

I love it! Wonder if they have sirens too!

Our laws explicitly state that cyclists can't have sirens (though I bet cops on bikes could).

I was definitely feeling maintenance guilt this morning because I'm afraid that Gazelle was easier to ride than any of my bicycles, and I suspect it's lubrication. I need to make it a thursday night routine or something, or start a "maintenance watchers" support group a la weight watchers :) :)

well, i know i replied earlier, but can't help do an update. asked a local officer about their bikes, and he said they are a little heavier than regular mtn. bikes and a little heavier shock and do have police on them. I asked him about the coffee/donut holders (li10up that still has me LMAO big time) he didn't find it funny at all, of course, i about peed myself asking him this, ..his response to that was *insert profanities here*. i'm still giggling...

i hear police bikes never get flat tires, they have special tires that never go flat, they can go over stop sticks and chase after the bad guy.

ok so this isn't true (well it could be i don't know), but i know some of the new vehicles have tires that won't go flat.

I've heard that one, too. I got stopped for jaywalking by two bike cops. Never heard them coming. (I was so happy to see bike cops in action that i really didn't care i got caught being naughty.)

No, really, I'm not kidding! I was jaywalking (no cars, I looked!) and sauntered across the street against the light.

Two bike cops pulled me over like 10 feet later. They really will stop you!
