So... I did get my bike fixed (with some help from KnottedYet and my dad) but have been ill/injured/depressed and haven't been out for a ride yet. I decided to take a stab at it today, since the weather's gorgeous. It lasted for eleven whole minutes and 0.9 miles because of a few errors.

1) I did not inflate my tires and it's been more than a week since I picked up the bike from the shop. I could hear them sticking to the ground and yelling at me "don't hit a bump, we'll pinch flat just to spite you!"

2) I failed to account for the nippy fall weather. I was VERY cold despite the blue sky. Time to make that jacket! And maybe some arm warmers.

3) I hadn't taken into consideration the loss of fitness after two plus months of near total inactivity. AND instead of going down the hill to start, I went up it. I was instantly winded.

And then when I got home the slam lock had been activated and I was locked out. I hadn't brought my house key or my cell phone. Fortunately I could see that I hadn't put the stick in the window frame, so I could pull off the screen and get in via the front window. Still, it was a stupid thing and a hassle.

On the other hand, I'm OK with the very limited ride today - at least I tried, instead of saying "Oh, well I'll just hang it up until next season." In fact I wish I had more time to ride, but school and work makes it weekends-only for now....

Yay, Hip! Glad you got out! (and back in again!)

How is your MRSA healing up?

Geez HIP - I am so sorry the ride was nothing like you expected but at least you were healed enough to get back on the saddle! Its easy to overlook the mental checklist of riding when you have been away from it for awhile.

Now just focus on getting your stregnth back and take the saddle time slowly. Do you have a trainer perhaps? I for one do not like the cold so I am all for trainers this time of year and the gym.

Welcome back :)

Yay, Hip! Glad you got out! (and back in again!)

How is your MRSA healing up?

The MRSA infection is mostly cleared out - enough that they've taken me off the antibiotics for the time being. The antibiotics had stopped me from riding more than the 6 sq cm hole in my skin; for one the murderous yeast infection and for two the potency of them had also destroyed the flora in my intestines that help with digestion. I was taking enzyme tablets every time I ate!

The actual MRSA sore is now, according to the nice doctor lady at the sliding scale clinic "just your regular every day skin ulcer". It's no longer a potential source of a blood infection, so exercise is OK so long as I keep the sore covered (like I wouldn't anyways!). It does require debridement (for those not in the know, that means I have to stick gauze to the wet wound, let it dry, then pull the gauze off - it takes dead material along with it), which is nasty, but is supposed to help speed healing and reduce scar tissue.

It was the back injury, probably the direct result of spending three weeks with my feet elevated on the couch, that kept me off my bike most recently. And the temp gig along with school that keeps me out of the house from 6 am to midnight. I've gone to pot, I tell you. I've been nearly totally sedentary for two months and I'm feeling it. I can't wait to get back into semi-acceptable shape, but I'm going to have to take it gently or I'll hurt myself even worse...

You poor thing! :(
I hope things improve!
Think of today as a "learning day" where you got all your mistakes out of the way at once. :o
Get well soon!
