Okay, if I'm doing a sprint tri soon, what do I wear? What gear is absolutely essential?
Well, I think that tri shorts and a tri top are essential.
You can swim, bike and run in 1 outfit. SO EASY!
www.desotosports.com, has some AMAZING sales right now! If you are a small or xsmall... you can get some really great tri shorts for only $12 (I spent $48 on them).
If can also look for a one-piece tri suit.
I spent close to $100 on my tri shorts/top... but since I only RACE in it... it has seen me through 2 race seasons.
GOOD LUCK on the tri! Come back with a REPORT!!!

KSH, Did you get the low-rise shorts? If so how do you like the fit?

No, I got the regular ones:

2005 Women's Tri Short #WTS4

As comfortable as the original Tri Short (#119) has been for women for many years, we have stepped up the level of comfort by completely eliminating any seams in crotch and inseam, both inside and outside the short. The shorts are shaped and cut for women, and sized so that whatever size you wear in the original Tri Short, you will wear in the new Women’s Tri Shorts. The short has our Cycling Tri-Pad (one-piece with no seams) and a drawstring-elastic waist. It is specifically designed for swimming, biking and running without having to change.
I didn't want my tummy hanging out... as the tri top tends to ride up!
I bought them though... because there is NO SEAM up the crotch! They are made like bike shorts... in that sense.
95% of tri shorts and one piece tri suits have a seam up the crotch. In the one piece that I bought... it gave me super-camel-toe... it was obscene.

man- those low rise shorts look sooooooo low (like it's mere centimeters away from showing all the goods, you know?). I wish I had the belly of those models to get away with that. I need all the extra lycra I can get to keep that belly tucked in neatly. :D

Hey KSH -
Do you have the deSoto skinsuit they have on sale for $64? I'm thinking about getting them, but their sale items are under a No Refund/Exchange policy.
I'm also having problems finding a one-piece without the cameltoe issue and I'm not sure the deSoto was the brand you were talking about. I bought a Tyr skinsuit and yes, it was obscene. They had to go back right away.

For a sprint you can get away with just about anything. In my opinion the shorts are much more important than the top. When I started doing tris, I used a sportsbra on top and bought a pair of tri shorts. (If you want more coverage than the sportsbra, you can always put another top on over it at a transition.)
Good luck!

Sorry for the slow response Joy.
I do not have a one piece suit of any kind. I tried one, but I too had the cameltoe issue. Between the padding on the sides of the seams... and the suit pulling upwards... I had a SUPER CAMELTOE! It was obscene. I should have taken a picture though, it was really funny looking.
I have a rather long torso and it has always been hard for me to fit into one pieces accurately... so it's no surprise I couldn't find a one piece tri suit to fit me.
I love my shorts and tri top. It's easy to use the restroom in... and I can always change up the tri top for a different race look. Although, I just have one race outfit currently.
Did you find something that worked for you?
Oh, man, that cameltoe thing. What a nightmare.
I have a Sugoi trisuit, which I wear when I do a tri with an indoor swim (early in the season), when you can't wear a wet suit. I wear it with a sports bra under, and then pull on other layers for the ride, take off some layers for the run. No cameltoe. Here are pictures of me at the Leaning Tower Tri in May. You can barely make out the suit in the first one (taken on a cell phone!). In the second one, I have a shirt over the tri suit. It's really very comfortable. You can see the padding in the crotch, but no cameltoe. I don't wear it for other tris mainly because I don't want to show my belly fat.

Thanks gals,
I ordered the Craft suit in a number of sizes and hope one fits. I was told that this brand is slightly longer on the torso so I'll let you know if it works:

I have my first race on December 10. I hope I find a suit/kit that I can train in before the date. Eeesh... going out in public in a skinsuit makes me more nervous than the race itself.
Joy, I absolutely understand your discomfort. The trisuit I wear is so comfortable that I forget (mostly) to be embarrassed when I'm wearing it. I hope you enjoy yours, too! :D Lise

I wore a skort in my tri. No cameltoe! :p
http://www.teamestrogen.com/products.asp?pID=16828
Used UnderArmor compression shorts and a CW-X bra top as my base layer. Swam in that (under my wetsuit). Threw on the skort and my team tank-top over the UA and CW-X, and wore all that through the bike and the run.
I was very comfortable and will do the same thing next year. I did see a couple other skort wearers, and one woman in a grass hula skirt during the run!

I will be doing some sprint tri's this June. No wetsuit, so do I swim in my tri shorts????

Yep. Tri shorts are tri shorts... because you can wear them from the swim to the bike to the run.

Okay, I got the Craft suit and it seems to fit, long torso and all. Tri suits are NOT flattering. I'm feeling VERY self conscious in it but I know I have to get over it.
Soooo.... I'm gonna hold my breath and take the plunge... here I am in all my "voluptous" 34-A glory (please don't laugh):

Thanks for the encouragement gals. I'm normally not a shy person, but as an almost-40-year-old woman who gets mistaken for a small boy too many times... it starts to get to you!
("Scuze me son, are you lost? Oh, uh... sorry about that ma'am.")
I have a swim scheduled for tomorrow morning and a brick workout on Sunday. I'll wear the suit for both and report back to ya'll!
Joy, I think that's really flattering! I love the black curves on the silver. You look sleek! I can hardly wait for your race report. :D

Wow ! Blue Tree, I wish I could look like that in a tri-suit!
I have thighs and a butt like a runningback - not too attractive in that kind of thing; and then on top of that I've got the 40 year old belly everyone is talking about on another thread!

No kidding- you look fantastic! I think the first time you wear something like that in public you're bound to feel self conscious (I did, for sure!). Then you realize there are all sorts of sizes out there and that it truly doesn't matter what you look like. As a participant, I've never looked at other athletes and thought- "they really shouldn't be wearing that". I might feel like "I" shouldn't be wearing it, but never think that of others. Now, I admit I think "people shouldn't be wearing that in public" when I'm out among the general public (shame on me, I know)- but never at triathlons/running races because we're all fit (no matter size) and we're all out there doing it.
I think you look GREAT!!!! Very flattering to your figure- and you look very feminine!!! Now, go out there, rock that race, then come back here and tell us all about it! We'll be cheering you on virtually! :D

Thanks everyone for the kind words.
I tested out the suit this weekend in all three disciplines and really liked it. I purchased the XS, S and M so I could test the fit and return the ones that didn't work. I found the Small to work best. The Craft suit IS a bit longer in the torso than other brands I tried, which was a big plus. The fabric was stretchy, but not slick like bathing-suit lycra and very comfortable.
On Saturday, I overslept and rolled out of bed at 5:30am. Dressing in the dark, I neglected to closely check which of the three suits I pulled on. I mistakenly cut the tags off the Medium, put it on and drove to the gym for swimming. On my first lap I realized my mistake, when I kicked off and found the water pressure doing strange things to the top portion! Oops. Luckily, no one else was in the pool at the time so I was able to complete my 2 miles without incident. (More on that later)
This morning, I tried on the Small version (my correct size) and did a full brick workout. Of course, I did it in the gym because I am Wussy California Girl who cannot venture out in 48° weather without dressing like an eskimo. In the gym, I did a full hour on the spin bike, switched out my shoes and ran the full 5K on the treadmill. After a painfully slow mile of jelly legs, my stride finally came back and I finished the run in about 37 minutes. The suit was great. I was comfortable on the bike (although more than an hour would be tough on the girly bits) and the suit held me together on the run as well. It wicks away the sweat well and there were no "hot spots" I noticed. All in all, I was pretty happy with it. :D
My next question is... Does anyone want to buy a Craft suit in size medium, worn once?
