View Full Version : Goal for the remainder of the year...
Veronica

So far this year I've climbed just under 230,000 feet. I think I might be able to make it to 300,000 feet.
So that's added to my lengthy To Do list. :D
Anyone else revising their goals as the year end approaches?

Oh Veronica,
are you in the altitude club on BJ? My husband is doing that too.
I have had to re-do my goal 2x already for the year. I have less than 300 miles to go to make 2000, but now i'm not sure i can make it.
(it's getting dark out there!)

Nope, not doing the climbing competition. I prefer to compete with myself.
300 miles is only 100 miles a month. Make it a priority to get in a good 25 miles each weekend and you should be able to do it. Of course you may want to do more some weekends to have extra in case of crummy weather.

I've revised my mileage goal three times this year. It was my first year of riding, so I thought 1200 would be a good number. Now I'm aiming for 2250. I don't have a method to measure climbing distance, but once I do, I'll aim for a big number too! Like 5.:D
I hope to do three more 100k rides this year. My big goal is to attempt the Triple Bypass in Colorado next July.

My goal was to do 5 full Centuries and 5 Metric Centuries (only counting organized charity rides for this total) and 3000 miles.
I met the century goals. I had to do full centuries three weekends in a row to get them all in. Next year I won't wait so long.
I'm still about 350 miles short of the 3000 miles. Now that there's not much daylight left after work, I'll have to get going on the weekends to meet that goal.

Wow. Tough question.
I hit all my goals so far....broke the 2000 mile barrier, commuted more days this year than last, and completed a century with DH. I'm not sure what's left. I suppose I could try to put 2000 as far behind me as possible. Perhaps 2500, but I don't think I'll hit 3K this year. Maybe next year. Is it too early to start on the New Year's Resolutions??
(Oh, and I just checked my training center....45,000 feet of climbing since July. I guess MD is much flatter than CA!)
I'm on track to reach 6000 km in the coming months. I'm almost at 5500 now and just plan on riding easy on the weekends. Last year I rode too hard for my taste in the winter and ended up a bit depressed about riding in February. I am hoping to start fresh this spring, so I'll ride only recreationally through the winter. I want to ride my bike to enjoy the scenery and open air, not to train.
I'm using the spare time to run a lot and swim a little bit. I'm trying to spend more time stretching, and do more strength training starting November...
Overall it was a great year on the bike, especially the summer.

Since this year I got back on the bike after a long layoff due to injuries, I started with a conservative goal of 1000 miles for the year. Passed that goal a while back, now at approx. 1300, and beginning to think that 2000 miles might be do-able. I've been averaging 50 miles a week, and figured out I'd only have to increase by about 7-8 miles a week to make a solid 2000 by New Year's Eve.
I think I can, I think I can, I think I can.......

Oops, my math was off a bit--I've gotta average about 65 miles a week to get in 2000 by the end of the year. Still think I can.... :D
Well, I injured my knee in the summer, so I´ve had to revise my goal downwards :( I was going to ride a century this summer, so my goal is to do one next spring.
I´m intending to enjoy commuting to work until the snow starts and get fit for the Vasaloppet in March (90km cross-country ski race).
I´m so impressed by what everyone here has done this year.

I've had to revise my mileage goal down as I realized I wasn't going to make my original goal of 7500 miles (last year I did 7400 and was hoping I could do 7500 this year. But, a wet winter cut into my long rides and I couldn't make it up in the summer months).
If I get can in 1000 miles by December 31st I'll have 6400 miles in this year. The weather plays a big factor in my riding at this point, so we'll see.

My goal: Not get any fatter.
Oh, and this school term (ending in December) I want to commute at least every Tu-Th, if not more days per week. Rain or Shine.

I already have 2,250 on my bike and I really hope to get 3,000 in before the end of the year. The only problem is to be pregnant and try to achieve this goal. But I think that if I don't grow very fast I could get there.

Considering that my riding year was cut cleanly in half, ending at the end of June, I have obviously had to reassess my goals!
In the 6 months I was able to ride this year, I did 3 doubles and a 600k, close to 3000 miles total, so I am not too disappointed, all things considered.
My goal for the rest of the year is to try to be patient and heal so that I arrive in good health when I can ride in January. I'm also doing this silly marathon - but mostly fast walking, as I do notice some continuing ill effects when I push intensity level too high.
the hard thing for me will be patience at the beginning of next year, not pushing too much too fast. Patience is not one of my strong suits, so I will need to work on that!
V you can hit 300 k climbing no problem!

After being diagnosed and put on medication, I had to completely revise my goals. Now I am working on stay in shape and increasing endurance, hoping to be medically cleared soon to get on the trainer and out my bike. In the meantime, running will suffice.

My goal this year was to lose weight (15 lbs), bike more than 1500 miles, to start commuting and complete a century.
So far, I have completed 2 centuries, I now commute at least twice a week, I've put over 1500 miles on my road bike (not counting commute miles)...BUT, I've gained 5 lbs!!
So, to round out the year as a success...I need to lose 20 lbs. That might be a bit too aggressive. Perhaps I'll just up my milage goals? ;)

congrats to everyone for doing a great job!
my goal this past year wasn't to let the cold bay 15 lbs get to me. i did well. stayed toned and active! though next year i think i'm going to set milage goals for running and biking. stay tuned for that one!

I had started with 5200/year as a goal(100/week),. It became obvious that I was going to smash it, so I upped to 7000. Then I broke my arm, spent 7 weeks off the bike, and spent the last weeekend cruising the Mojave in van(Aka the 508) I may revise it to 6500.
I wanted to do a century a month, but that went out the window
I also wanted to lose some wieght. I was doing good until the crash. Still, I'm about 20 lbs below I what was last year, but 25 over what I wieghed when I was in PA.
All in All, I was looking at this year as prep for next year in terms of both Bike and personal goals. So I made some progress, but not as much as I had hoped.

I set the following goals for 2006:
* 5000 miles (indoor and outdoor)
* 2000 club miles
* captain 10 rides for the club
* ride 5 centuries
* average speed 15.0
Thus far I've logged 5,107 miles, 2305 club miles, captained 10 rides during my summer vacation, completed 3 centuries and my average speed for the year is just a tad above 15.0. I hope to get another century in next weekend and it may be my last for the year given the onset of the cold temperatures. I have a feeling I'll be pulling the trainer out in a couple of weeks and logging a lot of mindless hours/miles from that point forward.
I've had a great year thus far on my bikes and am looking forward to setting some new goals for 2007 - not sure what they will be but I know I'll have fun chasing them. If I don't make the 5 centuries this year there is always 2007 and heck 4 is pretty darn good given I rode my first century just last year.

I met my goal of 2500 miles 2 weeks ago. I also did the century I said "maybe" I would do. I figure I have another 200-350 miles left before it's really too cold.
My riding is winding down. Now that I've mentally released myself from trying to achieve the goal, I feel relaxed. I would like to try to ride fairly steadily through November, on the weekends and for the next 2 weeks 1-2x after school until the time changes. I'd like to try riding through the winter as much as I can, but I really don't think I will, except for the days when it's 40 or above and the streets are clear. However, i am noticing that sometime in late August i start getting "sick" of cycling. Usually I'm in a better frame of mind by September, since the weather is so nice then. But I seem to just run my body down and then I get mentally drained.
My other goals are to get back to weight lifting (I started this week) and do more mountain biking before the winter sets in. This is my last year of teaching. I will up my goal to 3,000 miles next season, as I will be able to ride more in the fall.

On Bike Journal, my goal was originally 2000 miles by the end of the year, but then I upped it to 3000 because I figured if you don't make a goal higher than what you think you can do, you won't do as much as you can.
So I'm definitely going to hit 2000 (probably in the next couple weeks) but I think 3000 was a bit optimistic, especially considering it's SNOWING in early October...
I still did more than I thought I would by now, so anything else is gravy :D
Now for the ski goals... Unlike Bron, I don't have a 90 km. race in my future, (the Euros are so much more hardcore about skiing than we are!) but I would like to add one more ski marathon to my calendar this year. Oh, and get my Birkie time under 5 hours.
Now that it's in print, I have to do it, right?

It's a heart/pulmonary artery residual issue that I hope is resolved by the time I am back on the bike. For now, it just means intensity level needs to be low. So I will deal with it - and hope to be out at Mines Road with you next year!

I am not sure what I really had in mind for goals for this year. this was my 1st year on a road bike and I didn't know what I could do....what did I do??
I was so excited when I did a 50 mile ride, then I did a 70 mile ride and then I did a century! wow. As of right now I have done 3026 miles this year on my road bike....I am so excited. Now I am trying to think about goals for next year, not sure how many miles to shoot for and maybe I'll try to do a couple of centurys. This has been an awesome year for me on my bike!

I track only vaguely. So I know that last year I did about 1200 single bike miles and 1800 tandem bike miles. This year I think it will be closer to 1600 single and maybe 2800 tandem? I just try to ride anywhere from 60-150 miles a week, depending on what life is permitting. Have added a short steep hill to my single rides, which I do at least once, and sometimes twice, and want to keep working on hills.

My goals this year were to recover from ACL surgery, get back on the bike and salvage as much of the summer biking as I could.
To date I have ridden 2,725 road miles (haven't tallied all the trainer miles) and ridden in 3 week long tours, (Candisc, Brat and Cycle North Carolina).
In retrospect, I wish I had saved Brat and Cycle North Carolina for next year. I did well on the Candisc ride in Aug. but didn't have the endurance for the the long miles, 3 days of 80+, hilly miles on Brat and the steeper hills on day one of Cycle North Carolina.
My goals now are shifting gears to get ready for the ski season, I need to move fast as A-Basin opened today. I also would like to get some mtn biking in and have set my goal for 3,000 bike miles.

Well, I blew my original goal of 2,000 miles away back in July and if all goes well I will have well over 3500 miles for the year. Now, I am just cruising and planning to keep riding through the winter. I want to have a good base for a 300k in May. (Thanks, SadieKate! It is the brevet series in Driggs! ;) )

Wow,
Can you believe it's been a year since I stroked??? In the spring I had a million goals, and great heartache when I could not reach them. Then I FINALLY realized that I was being to damn hard on myself and had to look back at how MUCH I have achieved since my illness. Like all of you on this board I am one tough cookie, and I have fought a damn good fight. One year ago I could not walk, tie my shoes, or dress myself. Now thanks to PT/OT and my family I am doing all that stuff with a little help from my braces and canes. I can ride my bike, not alone, with hubby and son, but damn I CAN DO
THAT!!! So, illness has made me realize that goals are silly for me, and I need to take each little accomplishment like it was a "goal".
Watch out for me...I'm coming back with a vengence:eek:

Chick, it's not the total miles that matter, it's the time and quality.
Oh Veronica,
are you in the altitude club on BJ? My husband is doing that too.
Nope, not doing the climbing competition. I prefer to compete with myself.
Hm, that competition doesn't necessarily have anything to do with competing against others. Many if not most simply signed up as a way to publicly state their goals -- just like this thread. Besides, beyond the availability of hills in everyone's home terrain there is the issue of the creativity in measuring altitude gain. If I used just the Internet mapping sites, I could easily increase my numbers by 30-50%. Nope, it's only for personal measurement, just like total mileage on BJ.

After reading through this thread, I am so impressed with all of you (not that I wasn't before). For instance, I can't imagine climbing 300,00 feet for the year (especially for as flat as it is here) or riding 7500 miles. Bravo to all of you, especially those of you who were coping with an injury or illness. And here I've been whining all week about a darn cold!
Thanks for the inspiration.

My goals for the year included the following . . .
Lose Weight
Ride my first century
Commute to work everyday
Double last years 1200 miles.
So far I have accomplished . . .
Lost weight, about 30 pounds.
Rode my first century, LRRH in June.
Ride my bike more than I drive the car.
Just passed 3300 miles for the year.
My goals to finish out the year . . .
Lose 20 more pounds
Make it to 4000 miles
Stay in the top 1000 riders at Bike Journal

I think I'll make my milage goal of just over 3000 miles this year. It will be a stretch, though.
Sadly, my more interesting goals will have to wait until next year. I was going to finish my bike tour and ride from more-or-less Sioux City IA to home this spring but Younger Daughter's graduation got in the way of that.
DH & I were also going to ride the Katy Trail across Missouri, but getting Younger Daughter to college delayed that plan at least a year.
(As for all of the above: As my Dad would say it's cheaper than bail. Frankly, I'm not too sure... )
Ah well, there's always next year, and I don't think the trails are going anywhere. I've even heard rumors that the Katy Trail might be extended. I like rumors like that. :)
Climbing goals: I just have resolved to point my big ol' bike at more hills. I refuse to keep track, though, just knowing the raw miles is enough.

Having to write out your goals is such great motivation!
I started riding in April, on a mountain bike, with a goal to ride 500 km this year. Broke that in May. Upped it to 1500 km, bought a road bike, and broke my goal in July. Upped it to 2500 km, broke that a week ago. With teh weather changing and being back to work, I don't think I can realistically ride as much as I have been so if I can break 3000 km by the end of December, I'll be very happy.
Also had a goal to lose 20-25 lbs and have lost 12 so far. Will try to lose the rest by December 31st.
My other unrelated-to-biking goal is the be able to look good in a bikini once more before I die. Preferably next summer. Will have to do some serious working out this winter to accomplish that one, if it's even possible...
As an aside, after reading everyone's goals, I am inspired, but none so much as people like Massbikebabe, Bikingmom, and Maillotpois, whose health struggles make my own goals seem frivolous. Congratulations to all of you who have so much more to deal with. I am truly impressed by your strength and determination...

My goal was to ride the PMC. I didn't have any other goals around mileage or anything else. But to do so, I had to get into decent shape, learn how to ride, use clipless, ride on the road instead of bike trails etc. So this whole cycling season was one of firsts, and I consider it a great success. At first everything was a challenge, even the entirely flat local rail trail. By the end of the summer, I enjoyed long distance riding in groups and was in decent shape (which is only getting better).
For the remainder of this year, my goals are:
-finish the duathlon I'm entered in
-continue running and spinning/biking to build my fitness
-come up with my event list/goals for 2007 and rough training plan
-enjoy other sports (kayaking, snowshoeing, skiing etc)
-do more strength training

I've revised my mileage goal upward from 5K to 8,250. If weather permits, I might raise it to 9,000. I'm hoping for a mild, snow/ice free rest-of-2006 (and all of 2007, haha).
My goals for the rest of the year is to get out on my 'cross bike for some dirt riding and to acclimate quickly to the colder temps.

I've only returned to cycling (since my 20s) this march, so I'm too much of a newbie to have formulated any goals beyond hoping that I would continue to cycle consistently in spite of the fact that I was gaining weight pretty steadily (and DH who was riding less and eating more was losing steadily:eek: ). Well, I kept at it, and I think I will hit 1000 miles within the month. I've also lost the 8 pounds I gained when I started plus 15 more. I don't think I want to get too hung up on weight loss or mileage, because I can become obsessive about these things:rolleyes: . I think I will just stick with the goal to ride consistently.

this is a running goal:
when i lived in phoenix i didn't believe i could run. there was a trail that hiked around usery mountain that was 7 miles long. it would take me from 3 to 4 hours to hike it depending on who i was with.
when i go down there next month my goal is to run it the whole way.
(now that i've said this twice and have this many witnesses i have to do it, hopefully the leg will be 100% by then.)
