I was walking down the street, Latte in hand, when this bike whispered, hey, hey you......

I found my first road bike at Salvation Army for $30.00!!! It's a Schwinn World Tour (about 1987 or so). I took her immediately for a spa day at my LBS. The guys laughed but said she was in almost mint cond. Now she is getting tuned and trued, new wraps, toe clips and her own computer. I'll pick her up in a couple of days.

I'm so excited because I wanted a road bike but could not afford one. This will suit me for now, and she's a perfect fit! Now I have to find a saddle. The one that is on there is a wide body tractor seat!

So tell me roadies, will this old ten speed earn me scoffs and eye rolls when I am ready to join a group ride? I just want to be prepared, because I will work to blow thier socks off with her if I need to ;).

I'll post a pic when she comes home.

ANY bike that gets ridden is waaaay better than 10 bikes that sit in the garage.

It's not the bike, it's the engine.

"It's not the bike........ it's the engine."

What pedalfast said! I totally agree! You get out there and ride and show them what you can do. :p And have fun doing it.

Oh how exciting! Welcome to roadie world... :)

I personally am always impressed by classic bikes... they are few and far between in America it seems, as we tend to throw away the old and get new all the time... I have heard that classice bikes are far more common to be seen on roads in Europe... going in July so I'll let ya know if that proves to be true...

Today there was a bike swap meet and I was verrrrrry tempted to buy a Cannondale "Crest" bike with downtube shifters... it was a classic and very pretty...

Have fun when you get her home and back on the road!:D

I think she sounds like a great first road bike. My road bike is about that era, and she's a great ride. I think it may be a perfect learning bike- every one should know how to use downtube shifters, and learning to ride them on a friction setting has it's own snob appeal. As long as the fit is good, it'll be great.
