A couple of Sundays ago, went down to the beach at Sandbanks, Poole, Dorset, UK and I was fortunate enough to watch The Animal (Mountain Biking UK) Team, star riders Martyn Ashton and Grant ‘Chopper’ Fielder were showing off their bike skills.

Front man, Martyn, is a former world champion and ‘Chopper’ is known as King of the Dirt after winning major UK dirt jump competitions

However, one of the best spectacles was the difficult bunny hop. Martyn Ashton until recently held the World record at 43 inches (110 cm).

But Martyn has been on it lately and has pushed the high jump to just below the world record, I saw him bunny hop 48” (122cm) and is in training to beat the record next year.

It really was pretty amazing to watch, now I am not known for my photographic skills, so I was really pleased how this photo came out:

We're having a little arguement here- please tell us how this jump was set up...

Sure, I know exactly what you mean, it does produce something of an optical illusion.

OK, have attached another photo I took of him jumping a much lower bar, what he was doing was jumping from one side of the bar to the other, really amazing.

Hope this settles the argument?

Unbelievable. Scary, too, because if he doesn't clear the bar he's toast. I'll bet he practiced on a flat surface instead of that ramp, first.

Thanks for posting that. I'll never be able to bunny hop, I'm afraid.

Karen:

Never say never! You'd be amazed at what you can do if you just try! I used to say I couldn't do things but I've done a bunch of those things now and don't think much about it anymore. Just keep your eyes wide open and all your options free!

Is he using platform pedals? Not even clipless??

Doing these kind of tricks, I guess they just use ordinary pedals.

By the way, I did not take this photo. If you want to take a look at some more really cool pics, go to http://http://wake-riders.com/photo/thumbnails.php?album=33

I would like to say..........never say never...........but I don't think I will ever be up to these standards, I long to bump up a kerb but can't even manage that! :(
