1st time for night riding..........wow!

I have just experienced night time riding for the first time, absolutely brilliant.

My partner has often mentioned it and I have always said 'no', as my night vision is not too good.

However, my son came over to show me his new lights, Cateye ABS 20 and suggested I try them.

Well, went off last night onto the heath, which is quite high up and how fascinating it was, we turned our lights off for a while and just looked down on all the lights, it was just like being a child again, I was so excited.

Am now checking out the internet to buy some of my own.

Was thinking about Cateye ABS 20N, anybody ever used these?

Any comments will be appreciated.

I love riding after dark, too. It's a whole different experience. Just gotta have the right light---invest in a good one. Watch for Performance Bike to have a good coupon deal and you can get a really good quality, bright light for a great price.

we just started mt biking at night last winter. It is cool. We picked up a couple of lights on ebay. You might want to check that out.

Yes, am currently watching a set but I have a sneaky feeling they might go way above what they are actually worth. Still, it's good fun watching.

I have only ever ridden in the dark once, and that was my partner and i getting back from a long ride at dusk a few months back and I was just too tired to go any further. The last couple of kilometres was by moonlight.

Although I was completely worried that we were invisible (no lights, not reflective gear) the night was still enough that we would have been able to hear traffic (fortunately no cars came by). I really want to do it again - but with making ourselves visible - it was beautiful and serene and things smelled different.

I can imagine it would be a BLAST to go night-riding provided you have the proper lights....

The other night we decided to go out & see how our lights worked.... The town we drove to doesn't have any street lights. In the pitch black of night, these lights are NOT strong enough -- (esp the headlight).
The tail light was really pretty good, but....the headlight wasn't bright enough (for my liking).

After 4 miles into our ride, I started thinking of new plot lines for a scary horror book........ I mean, my mind was really running away with some pretty creepy thoughts :eek: :eek:

:p We turned around, put our bikes on our car rack & drove home :) ....

These lights would be sufficient enough if you're riding in an area where there are street lights....

I went out pre-dawn this morning -- totally dark -- and hit the beach bike trail. It was beautiful. The path was fairly well lit (and I still had my lights on) and the surface was so glassy smooth I could barely hear my tires gliding over it... in fact, the only sounds were the crashing waves and my own breathing. For the first 10 miles or so I saw only a half-dozen people. On one lonely stretch of beach I got into the aerodynamic position and started cranking without fear of running into someone. It was blissful! :)

Even after the sky started to brighten, few people were out except for the surfers. Alas, around 7am the pelotons and joggers came out and I pedaled home at a leisurely pace. It was nice while it lasted!

Big thanks for the advice about the lights. No way would we go off road at night without decent lights. :eek:

Night riding is good. I, too, have poor night vision now and the more light the better. I use a Nite Rider HID, which does a great job for me. Some of the others don't illuminate enough. Veronica has a couple of websites that compare lights. Maybe she'll be kind enough to post them.

Thanx for all the advice.

My partner has just ordered a couple of sets of Cateye ABS-20N's.

They have both a 10watt spot light and 10watt flood light. Runtime is pretty good, 10w – Upto 2hr 25mins and 20w – Upto 1hr 10mins.
