Help getting a friend started from 2000 miles away....

I have a dear friend who is looking to get into MTBing...the problem is I am here in NC and she is there in Portland!
Can anyone point her in the right direction by suggesting a good LBS, maybe some clubs that have beginners clinics, and some good areas she just ride around...

Dang! what a great idea to network this! When i mailed my cousin in NJ
a bike, (she'd been riding a rusty 3 speed that was a larger man's bike)
I had no idea where to send her for lbs's trails, clubs, etc.

She should check out the Portland United Mountain Peddlers (http://pumpclub.org/index.php). (PUMP) I'm not a mountain biker myself, but I met a few of them at the Bike Summit in June. Nice folks.
