meh- those fussy doctors always want you to wait longer than you really need to. Liability and all probably...
What do they know anyway? When I had carpal tunnel surgery last year he told me not to ride my bike for a couple months. I was on my trainer within 2 weeks (with that hand in a brace on 4 pillows propped on the handlebars anyway). I didn't go OUTSIDE on my bike for 2 months... I'm sure you're fine!
